YOUR ALL FORGETTING THAT HE HAS A HOLTON MODEL NAMED AFTER HIM AND GOT MAJOR SPONSORSHIPS FROM HIM!!! Please refrain from making stupid comments if you are uninformed
You do realize they make smaller horns for both Holton and Conn?
Beginners don't pick up a full sized horn right off the bat. One BRAND is not smaller than the other, but one TYPE of horn may be bigger than another.
planning to do this next semester.. well between this and rosetti horn concerto in dminor.. this is definitely easier in some respects.. but still.. he makes it look easy.. getting an Alex horn also, should be some exciting shit i say! :D
i read a book on horn one time and it said he liked to use holton because of the tone or something like that, i personaly like holton just because there a little bigger than most horns!
Holtons are a small horn... actually. They're good for beginners because it takes less air to fill up. As the player matures and breath support advances, they would typically move up to a bigger horn, such as a Conn. However, this is personal choice. I personally play a Conn, but I have no complaints about Holton made horns.
No, Erika was right. They are bigger. Which is why so many professionals use them...especially the 179. It's an excellent choice for those wishing to upgrade their sound by changing horns. I play a Conn, and dream of playing a holton. The bore, bell, and sound are all so much bigger on Holtons. I'd love to see a beginner fill up a Holton as easily as a Conn.
i doubt its because of the horn- i mean, this is barry tuckwell we're talking about. he's the most recorded horn soloist of all time, i doubt he used a bad horn.
does anyone else not like the way he breathes? like, sometimes it does that little brief crescendo at the very end of the note. i know this particular piece has reeeeally wierd breath spots, but remember the story is that rick strauss wrote it for his pop, the other strauss who had luchemia or something like that. he needed alot of breathing spots, but the rest of us don't need all those breath marks. either he interpretted wierdly, or he was having some sort of bad dayand notbreathing well idk
my personal opinion is that it's because he's using a holton horn (i hate those things- i'm using one right now) lol!- it's the schools- i'm saving up to buy my own.
no, but it's definately a simlilar type or model or soemthing. he would obviously have a higher end and more bells and whistles- like having like 6 spit valves on one of his horns! haha.
@mayonaiseanonymous Actually it was revised by Oscar Franz with suggested possible breathing points throughout, to allow a player's personal preference on where to breathe whilst at the same time keeping the music flowing!

@MrAndrewMork Excuse me, I got a full-sized double holton as a beginner in 6th Grade. I am now a TMEA All-state alternate as a sophomore. :)

@rexip999 Actually that's right tempo, the orchestra went a little bit too fast for the intro. Tuckwell returned the tempo back to normal.

I played on a Holton as a beginner and moved up to a Conn. There's no contest in the size.

You can say that you don't like this and that about him but I don't see you up there.

I suspect that Mr. Tuckwell wouldn't be using a school's holton...

@Othello1019
His favorite horn was a Krispy, that was very difficult to play in tune, but he clams he's never heard a better-sounding instrument.

Oh... he's playing it very safely here... little out of tune. I think he has a jetlag. But otherwise... very good.
