The power to weight is almost identical at 6.8 lbs/RWHP - this is why they are evenly matched at lower speeds. BTW, the RX-7 would also pull a a Cobra from a dig due to better traction (they don't sit & spin thier tires due to too much low end torque). The RX-7 also pulls away harder as speed increases due to 1) a wider powerband (it does not redline until 8,000 rpm) & 2) a significantly lower drag coefficient (Cd) than the Stang. TT RX-7s also pick up ~ 20 rwhp on a roll - very fast indeed.
The 787b wasn't banned. Rule changes ended group c which stopped all cars from that era. It also ran for a number of seasons and it only ever won one race. It was not dominant and only won as the faster cars failed. Still a win though.
The 26b the ran in Imsa in the rx792p where it was consistently out classed

Torque and horsepower are two different things IM not a Ford fan or a Mazda fan so I have a non biased opinion. There are other videos of these same cars and the mustang did win in one of them though I think driver also makes a difference in this race.
The Mazda driver spooled up while doing the beeps for that I give him props for being a smart Turbo driver, its not always what you have but how u use it!

I personally own a RX7 and I wasn't expecting this outcome. 150whp difference is a lot. I wonder if aerodynamic was the winning factor. Or maybe the Seven had a scramble button. That would explain why it pulled out of no where.

@Vallejoonmamas Your absoulutely right! Import tuner built a 93 rx-7 with 423 whp and 309lb feet of torque and it only ran a 11.9 quarter mile. Any 550whp mustang makes that amount a torque at idle and there is not a mustang on this planet even with a full interior and drag radials that will run more than a 11.3 quarter mile even if you put your grandma behind the wheel and granny shift. The numbers are hyped to make his car seem faster. New title: 407whp rx-7 vs. stock cobra.
That was an impressive race. I'm surprised the Cobra fella permitted the RX-7 fella time to brake boost, otherwise the outcome might have been slightly different. Then again, it may not have. The RX-7 benefits from a longer duration power band, perfect for the turbo, and lighter weight. On the flip side, the Cobra has a lot of low end grunt that the supercharger is perfect for. It seems to me that with a bit of airflow tuning on the Cobra, that race, as is, would have been a lot closer. Nice vid
My dad told me that back in his day...Those RX7s where monsters...Anyone with a lick of knowledge about tuning could make em fly...He told me a story about gettin his ASS BEAT at the strip by a sleeper RX7 back in 1992(He drove a 89 Z/28...Which was no slouch back then).

@Emoddd I disagree. An Evolution, to be properly driven, requires some skill. Sure, any idiot with a license can roll race the Evo, but to really drive it, a driver must be skilled at launching it. But that's just for drag races. What about rallies and road courses? The Evo has a nasty bit of understeer that a driver needs to be able to deal with, something an inexperienced driver would not know how to do. If you don't like the Evo, you don't like the WRX/STi either as the same could be said.
@BallisticTorch I am just talking from my personal experiance,i knew people who did very bad in powerful but hard to drive cars and once they got themselves a evo or a subaru they were very hard to beat.and still their lack of driving abilities showed!. I have driven full race EVO,s GC8,s and Prodrive GDA and all sorts of other race cars and i can tell you that the easiest to drive was the subaru and then came the EVO.

Seen a new GTR run consistant 11.8's at our 1/4 mile track here all night once I think he did 4 runs and all were within a couple hundreths of miliseconds together lol. What I think a lot of people don't know about rotaries is that each rotor is doing the job of 3 pistons and cylinders all at once, so a 2 rotor wankel is about the equivalent of a 6 cylinder engine. I prefer pistons over rotors for personal reasons, but I will never look down on rotary power.

@buffhulk : 2002 camaro and 2003 cobra are very different cars. The camaro weighs much less, and doesnt surcome to heat as bad as a cobra. this cobra may not have had what it dynoed whenever, but thats part of the equation isnt it? For reference, I made 385 whp on the stock turbos in my fd3s, and I pulled on a verified 475 rwhp 03 cobra harder than this race.
The Cobra had a low rev count, that's why when he shifted, he lost. Had it been a longer race, the Cobra would have annihilated, but the RX-7 had the advantage here.
@fordfan197 I never said it couldn't... but you are making it seem like a rx7 will die in top end... the rotary is a high revving top end car... all it does is go fast and fast in the top end... also takes a lot less power to get a rx7 to hit 200mph then say a mustang... mainly due to aerodynamics and mechanics of the engines...

What I am saying is, the Cobra has a higher top speed, so once the RX7 has reached its max, the Cobra would still have quite a bit more to go and would have a chance to catch up. I think you are trying to make it seem like I am saying the Cobra is better, I am not. I am saying the RX7 has a lot better acceleration and will win any day in a shorter drag. The Cobra has a higher top speed and would probably win in something like a full mile drag.
@fordfan197 for sure newer performance cars like Cobra's, Z06's, SRT8's, ( to stay on American cars) might have higher top speed from factory! but don't forget most of the time its in stock trim.
When my 7 was near stock (int/exh/12 psi, stock port engine), I've got it up to around 275 km/h.
Now with my ported engine, t04e turbo but untuned ECu, i managed 290 which isn't a lot, consider I've nearly doubled oem HP.
My friend (who is a rotary builder), got clocked by the cops at 306 km/h.

Everyone that races Japanese Tuners upgrade the hell out of them and tune them to the max, which is why they end of with better performance than a stock Muscle car. If everyone that owned a Muscle car upgraded and tuned their cars as much as possible, Muscle would have the advantage again.
@fordfan197 Also, American performance cars often have aggressive gearings. Which gives them a HUGE advantage on both 1/4 and full mile !!! Thats why a lot of them can easily take on exotics at drag strip.
But Circuit Racing and Top Speed runs on highways have been dominated by Japanese (RX7, Supra, Skyline, NSX, 300ZX) and Geman (M3/5, 911, SL600, S-Line).
You can see so much videos on the "Wangan" on youtube, and some dates back to the 80's, popularized by Shuto Kousoku 6 movies series.
@rx7outlaw No no you are completely right, but that's the problem see? Everyone that has a Japanese car that races tunes the hell out of them, upgrades them to the max. So much so that they would have better gearboxes and gearings than a stock Muscle. If it came down to everything being stock, Muscle would win most of the time.

seems like a good race. fd is a few hundred pounds lighter, longer gears, and has more top end but if this was from a slower roll or a drag race, cobra probably wouldve won.

@Vallejoonmamas Your absoulutely right! Import tuner built a 93 rx-7 with 423 whp and 309lb feet of torque and it only ran a 11.9 quarter mile. Any 550whp mustang makes that amount a torque at idle and there is not a mustang on this planet even with a full interior and drag radials that will run more than a 11.3 quarter mile even if you put your grandma behind the wheel and granny shift. The numbers are hyped to make his car seem faster. New title: 407whp rx-7 vs. stock cobra.

That was an impressive race. I'm surprised the Cobra fella permitted the RX-7 fella time to brake boost, otherwise the outcome might have been slightly different. Then again, it may not have. The RX-7 benefits from a longer duration power band, perfect for the turbo, and lighter weight. On the flip side, the Cobra has a lot of low end grunt that the supercharger is perfect for. It seems to me that with a bit of airflow tuning on the Cobra, that race, as is, would have been a lot closer. Nice vid

My dad told me that back in his day...Those RX7s where monsters...Anyone with a lick of knowledge about tuning could make em fly...He told me a story about gettin his ASS BEAT at the strip by a sleeper RX7 back in 1992(He drove a 89 Z/28...Which was no slouch back then).

@Emoddd I disagree. An Evolution, to be properly driven, requires some skill. Sure, any idiot with a license can roll race the Evo, but to really drive it, a driver must be skilled at launching it. But that's just for drag races. What about rallies and road courses? The Evo has a nasty bit of understeer that a driver needs to be able to deal with, something an inexperienced driver would not know how to do. If you don't like the Evo, you don't like the WRX/STi either as the same could be said.

@BallisticTorch I am just talking from my personal experiance,i knew people who did very bad in powerful but hard to drive cars and once they got themselves a evo or a subaru they were very hard to beat.and still their lack of driving abilities showed!. I have driven full race EVO,s GC8,s and Prodrive GDA and all sorts of other race cars and i can tell you that the easiest to drive was the subaru and then came the EVO.

@Emoddd That and new GTR's I mean I love them all Subby's and Evo's and I'd love to drive them but where's the fun in owning a car that pretty much drives you. Seen a new GTR run consistant 11.8's at our 1/4 mile track here all night once I think he did 4 runs and all were within a couple hundreths of miliseconds together lol. Doesnt take much skill to hold the brake, press the gas let off the brake and steer lol, although his R/T was pretty good.

What I think a lot of people don't know about rotaries is that each rotor is doing the job of 3 pistons and cylinders all at once, so a 2 rotor wankel is about the equivalent of a 6 cylinder engine. I prefer pistons over rotors for personal reasons, but I will never look down on rotary power.

I smile when I hear the sound of a Rotary engine, favorite car ever is the RX-7, on the other hand, she sheer power that you can feel from the Cobras engine is amazing! Actually, these are my 2 favorites!

@buffhulk : 2002 camaro and 2003 cobra are very different cars. The camaro weighs much less, and doesnt surcome to heat as bad as a cobra. this cobra may not have had what it dynoed whenever, but thats part of the equation isnt it? For reference, I made 385 whp on the stock turbos in my fd3s, and I pulled on a verified 475 rwhp 03 cobra harder than this race.

The Cobra had a low rev count, that's why when he shifted, he lost. Had it been a longer race, the Cobra would have annihilated, but the RX-7 had the advantage here.

@fordfan197 I never said it couldn't... but you are making it seem like a rx7 will die in top end... the rotary is a high revving top end car... all it does is go fast and fast in the top end... also takes a lot less power to get a rx7 to hit 200mph then say a mustang... mainly due to aerodynamics and mechanics of the engines...

What I am saying is, the Cobra has a higher top speed, so once the RX7 has reached its max, the Cobra would still have quite a bit more to go and would have a chance to catch up. I think you are trying to make it seem like I am saying the Cobra is better, I am not. I am saying the RX7 has a lot better acceleration and will win any day in a shorter drag. The Cobra has a higher top speed and would probably win in something like a full mile drag.

@fordfan197 for sure newer performance cars like Cobra's, Z06's, SRT8's, ( to stay on American cars) might have higher top speed from factory! but don't forget most of the time its in stock trim.
When my 7 was near stock (int/exh/12 psi, stock port engine), I've got it up to around 275 km/h.
Now with my ported engine, t04e turbo but untuned ECu, i managed 290 which isn't a lot, consider I've nearly doubled oem HP.
My friend (who is a rotary builder), got clocked by the cops at 306 km/h.

Everyone that races Japanese Tuners upgrade the hell out of them and tune them to the max, which is why they end of with better performance than a stock Muscle car. If everyone that owned a Muscle car upgraded and tuned their cars as much as possible, Muscle would have the advantage again.

@fordfan197 Also, American performance cars often have aggressive gearings. Which gives them a HUGE advantage on both 1/4 and full mile !!! Thats why a lot of them can easily take on exotics at drag strip.
But Circuit Racing and Top Speed runs on highways have been dominated by Japanese (RX7, Supra, Skyline, NSX, 300ZX) and Geman (M3/5, 911, SL600, S-Line).
You can see so much videos on the "Wangan" on youtube, and some dates back to the 80's, popularized by Shuto Kousoku 6 movies series.

@rx7outlaw No no you are completely right, but that's the problem see? Everyone that has a Japanese car that races tunes the hell out of them, upgrades them to the max. So much so that they would have better gearboxes and gearings than a stock Muscle. If it came down to everything being stock, Muscle would win most of the time.
But yes there is no doubt in my mind that Japanese tuners would have the advantage on a circuit.
