It is actually real. Of course this wasn't what the audience heard. They take his real voice and puts it underneath a bunch of professional recordings to be able to call it "live". Of course the distorted mic helps to push the bad notes down even further. The guys who was mixing this acutally just deleted all the overdubs and stuff and made a recording.

Sure you do. Well the albums don't sound like that but the singer just might. You make a bunch of different recordings and take out the good notes. Puzzle them together och maybe using the autotuner a little bit (lets say you are about so sing an A (440 hz) and you do 445 hz, this program can automaticly modify the signal.

A little fun fact: About 60% of Britney Spears "voice" that you hear on recordings belongs to a Swedish girl. That's how she manages to get that type of sound.
