  • The Kodiak is I believe less expensive than the Caravan and way superior for off airport ops. Rugged like the turbine Otter & except you can get one new from the factory in Idaho. Otters are wonderful, but haven't been made for 50 years.

  • Go Otter, The Caravan will just collect a little ice and crash.

  • Otter all the way

  • the only problem was that the DHC was slow in the air

  • If you can't tell what they are from that video than you don't need details, you need glasses.

  • Sorry, I can't see the video well enough to identify either aircraft.

I just know that one got airborne faster than the other. I WOULD

    like to see the details.

  • Actually, that's 2 million dollars worth of airplanes, plus one Cessna.

  • well..there's 4 million dollars worth of planes

  • I'm not a float pilot, but I know for a fact that with identical airplanes, engines, and loads, there will always be a difference in performance due to pilot technique/experience in type. Not trying to discount the Otters...just an observation. I have flying experience in Caravans, great plane. I love Otters though! (Wish I could just RIDE in one!)

  • have you ever encountered icing problems with the caravans?

  • @usernameavailable152 I haven't, but I have seen on many occasions a Caravan land and taxi up to the ramp wearing 2" of ice on all leading edges not protected by the boots. It's quite a sight.

  • @born2flyalaska hmm surprised it didn't fall out of the sky. I have heard of caravans having only a small amount of ice on the wings and disaster hits - unfortunately

  • the turbine makes all the differnace, i was flying a standard otter last season and on a hot day i was lucky to get 100 ft.min with a load!! lazy pig but she gets off te water fine

  • If you put a Garrett on the Caravan it will perform alot more similarly to a 331 powered Otter as far as short field. And the Caravan is faster even with the Pratt.

  • @TT350500600 No matter what you stick on the front of a Van! It still takes the same speed to get her in the air - and there isn't an engin big enough to make it get there at the same speed as an Otter, they all have there place in the world as far as price per mile, fuel burn per speed, usefull load they can take for how far they need to go! But for any work Off the strip! - like 6- 700foot'ers wheels or floats you realy cant compair the two!

  • @TheN6Driver Do a search on the Supervan 900 from Texas Turbines. See what a -12 Garrett does. It'll get off as quick, use less fuel, and go faster. An otter is like an old Corvette. Its cool and does its job with class. But a new ZO6 will spank it in every avenue.

  • DeHaviland are wonderfull floatplanes... Cessnas are nice but meant to be on wheels or skis

  • That's why 9 out of 10 float planes in Alaska are Cessna 180/185s? :P

  • Comment removed

  • No competition. The otter will not lose any comparison to the caravan. Both nice planes, but the -3T is superior hands down.

  • C 208 is underpowered. I have jumped from a couple that could not do 800 fpm to 12 000ft agl. The one was almost as slow as our normally aspirated c 206.

  • Did you expect anything else. By the way nice icing charactertics on the caravan.

  • The Otter is such a workhorse...

  • Go De Havilland! Still cessna makes a good aircraft. If either company sold one of them to me for 2 dollars, id buy it.

  • from personal experiences, the otter will haul more and take off fatser, but it is an exceptional aircraft, the caravan is very good in its own right.

  • I work for a company that operates both the caravan and otter, both on floats and the otter is way more reliable and takes off way shorter than the caravan. My opinion the caravan is a nice plane but shouldent be on floats.

  • question....doesn't it seem like the caravan should be matched up against the beaver instead since there is only one engine, and what would the outcome be on that?

  • otters also only have one engine.

Otters are a direct match with the caravan

  • @Colonelbravo1 you are thinking of the twin otter... this is the single engine version

  • The Caravan didn't stand a CHANCE! GO De Havilland!

  • It's ok, the Cessna still gets the prize on design and reliability.

  • I would give DeHavilland the prize for design and reliability... not Cessna

  • Really? Well I guess everyone is entitled to their oppinions.

  • Holy shit, I don't think I've ever seen 4 mile pond that clear... where did all the lily pads and weeds go?

  • Always clear for the first few weeks of the season. :)

  • Good ole Canadian Iron. Well done DH.

  • No surprise there ;)

  • must have been a rookie on the caravan...

  • actually, every summer i go fishing up at halley's camps on the english river, they own not only a dehaviilland turbine otter, but also a cessna caravan (and many other floatplanes), whilst i was there, idiscussed with the pilot the takeoff distances, and to my suprise, the otter is actually that much more efficient, (it takes off in some 1500 feet believe and dont qote me on that, im not sure), the DH otter is really that much better
