It's possible to play violin concerto in different rythm and it's always a new melody. I like the interpritation of Herbert Karajan with slower rythm, but this is also amazing!
In response to complaints about Hilary's "Bland Interpretation": Just because a performer follows the style of the time period of a piece does not mean that they are bland performers. A great performer takes into account what era of music the piece was written in, and who the composer was. However, they also express what the music says to them, and that is how a great solist moves their audience. Hilary Hahn is an incredible musician, just listen in peace and enjoy the music.
It is astonishing to me to see the lack of musical respect spewing from these comments. Hilary Hahn is one of the greats of our time. I think a true musician can appreciate when there is a performer who strives to perform a piece not only to perfection, but in the style it was originally written. She never misses a bow stroke, she never hits an out of tune note (I've heard both from the greats of the past). Her phrasing is perfect, she is a flawless player. A true musician can respect/admire it

ethereally beautiful...her technique is perfect and her expression is so deep it almost hard to believe. Even when she was just 15, it was clear that she was a violinist to remember...
Hilary has a beautiful sound, great musicianship and flawless technique. There are other ways to be a great player. It's just that happens to be my favorite combination. Especially the clean sound spoils me.

Those of you who condemn Hillary Hahn for inferior interpretation of this piece, it seems as though you are forgetting that a recording of this stature at this or any age is a truly marvelous achievement, and I can't help but think that your harsh critique is not caused by jealousy, none of you could compare.
Because of her limited bowing there is no dynamic expression. The difference is not just interpretation. If her play is compared with Maxim Vengerov's it is like student's and teacher's. After I watched Maxim Vengerov's play I could not watch this. Very poor.
she's technically great... but this is why classical music is dying. incidentally, poser critics use words like "economical but effective vibrato" "flawless finger flexing"... classical music was dying and sold its soul to marketing, which is where you get musicians like Hahn suddenly becoming the representatives of the classical music world. come up with a substantively NEW INTERPRETATION of the piece - otherwise, there's no point in playing it again. about as unoriginal as you can get...
@EvilyfyedTortoise i think you need to be better trained to recognize when an interpretation is filled with lots of cliches. when it's cliched, it comes off as not as authentic. this just washes out with every other factory-churned stock violinist out there. like listening to someone rattle off a bunch of buzzwords. btw - if you think its meant to played like that - listen to older recordings of the song. interpretations have changed from decade to decade...but you didn't know that, right?
@aerportman I agree about the need for a new interpretation. students are trained by their instructors to play "in the style of the period" and "as the composer intended". I think we have enough "perfectly interpreted" recordings floating around. why not try something new? sadly, if you want to stray far from the "correct interpretation," you're on your own.
Hahn's playing is probably as perfect as playing can get but it's a trifle too polite. I like to almost see blood and guts on the fingerboard. I prefer Josefowicz and Gitlis and Heifetz and Kogan because they beat the violin black and blue.
I had the chance to play this concerto (well I was the bassoonist in the orchestra) and this piece was one of the most amazing experiences I have had in an orchestra. This interpretation is beautiful. Simply beautiful.

Hilary Hahn of course deserves all the praise that is given in these comments, but don't forget to give due credit to Jean Sibelius, a clearly underrated composer.

@BraynDedd seria interesante ver si puedes escribir en otro idioma que no sea inglés, talvez ruso o francés, ahí veríamos tu capacidad...no es para mofarse de otras personas que no hablamos tu idioma
Around 8:45 into this, where the orchestra plays. Kavakos and Vengerov PLAY that on violin, extremely difficult. It's the part in the original version that was so difficult that Sibelius rewrote it, "simpler". But so far, the ONLY people able to play it that I've heard are Kavakos and Vengerov who plays it even better, crisper and clearer. Kavakos also plays the very original version. That part was always thought TOO difficult for anyone.
Hilary Hahn uses a French violin for most of her performances. It's pretty amazing she can still play more accurately than a lot of other pros who hold Strads or Del Jesus, even though her violin probably has less error tolerance.
I've been to her live concert with the San Francisco Symphony, and a remark about her profile specifically indicated that she typically uses her favorite French violin. Hope this helps.
@Steroid0Strad : Strads are the hardest to play? Really? Even Del Jesu is harder to play than a typical Strad. Strad generally has more resonance and power than Del Jesus and even Amati's. Later-year Strade with less Amati-style f-holes and arching (i.e. Flat arching) are especially easy to handle - at least that's the general consensus.
Awesome! She does give all you need to know about violin technique. And yet, there is something about her playing that makes me feel nothing besides that. And no, her playing is not cold. It's really weird, I don't know how to explain it. She is absolutly amazing, and the musical side is really there.. And I keep thinking of that, amazed every time I listen to her; while listening to another musician you forget that the technique exists because something in their playing takes you beyond it..
Throw away your violin methods. Ditch your teacher (well maybe not). Don't bother with convoluted explanations and over blown master classes. Just watch Hilary Hahn, her bowing, her fingering, her incredible economy of movement and her rock solid technique, exquisite sound and tasteful approach....and perfect intonation. She gives you all you need to know about how to play the violin.
@Steroid0Strad The "advice" was not meant literally! It was a turn of phrase, or hyperbole if you like, in order to put across how I appreciate her extremely sophisticated (in the real sense of that word) approach and almost flawless technique. Of course she cannot replace learning methods and teachers, but watching her could be a very useful example of fine playing since her approach is uncluttered and without complications or over-dramatic gestures getting in the way.
i think this music fits very well to dostoevsky's novels...for example "the idiot"....this passion, desperation, obscurity, sadness, beauty.....it shapes the world of a grand soul....while reading this book I always thought of this piece of music!
Well, can't you just imagine the irony the dress provides? I mean, just looking at the roses and the colours of the dress makes you (at least me) feel the sensation of the whole music piece.
What I'm wondering is, doesn't the 'cloth' that she's using for a rest, affect the sound of her violin?
...Normally it effects the sound of a violin but she always owns really loud violins that project so far that the cloth doesnt make that much of a difference.
I agree. For those who are interested in fashion, I'm sure there are plenty of videos of dresses. I accidentally clicked on the thumbs-down::YouTube won't let me correct it.
I do agree with you.... the beauty of this concerto is mainly inside the music... but it's like if he was trying to do more than just the music... whatever... I think Hilary Hahn totally understood this concerto !
This is a great video and much credit for the soloist. As far as the Orchestra, which is very good, this really brings alive the flutes, clarnets and basoons. For a concerto, I am amazed of how difficult the Orchestra parts are.
Of course, neither a very impressive performance nor my favourite rendition; but wow, she knows how to play this piece. Intonation, bow control, precision - it's all there.
She also adds some of her own personality to this. I have no trouble hearing that Hilary Hahn is violinist whenever I hear her perform on radio (audio only).
Kogan, Oistrakh, Heifetz and Vengerov I also easily can identify by their sound.
Not a bad company!
P S I also claim to identify Szeryng contrary to many...An underrated topclass violinplayer. D S
.......that little girl is possesed by some sort of supernatural power......it's just too divine sound, breathtaking music, awesome performance by hilary.....WOW
This is the most razor sharp, crystal clear, perfectly in tune, rhythmically accurate, lucid and effortless Sibelius I have ever seen or heard. Look at that bow control from the frog to the tip; look at those incredible fingers, perfectly in line and with a fabulously economical but effective vibrato, flawless finger flexing and beautiful arm action. Not only that but she manages do to it all without attention seeking body movements and with total modesty. Hahn is a phenominal violinist.
If you want a flawless of the Brahms Violin Concerto, get a recording of Hilary Hahn playing it. It is undoubtedly the best recording I've heard of the Brahms. Of course she's aged a few years between Siblius and Brahms, but she still does play magnificently nonetheless
8:00 - WOAH. man seriously, feel so bad that you cant clap between movements, i mean give that girl a round of applause! Absolutely sensational. :D i love it
By the way......She is brilliant throughout ;) but those ^^ particular wind bits are very cool i think :)
Heh the guy in the back is eyeing her like "god I played and practiced all my life and now im just backup to this kid.. ill kill her..." Can just see the hate in his eyes

She can always change the dress, but the talent is home grown and hard to get!!!

I agree. For those who are interested in fashion, I'm sure there are plenty of videos of dresses. I accidentally clicked on the thumbs-down::YouTube won't let me correct it.

The dress is beautiful - goes perfectly with her skin and the pure Sibelius sounds she brings us from Finland. She's right out of the Kalevala.

What does everyone think about her? I'm using them... They seem to work great! Extra energy in breaking up some of those slurs. bowings

At 14 years old you admit Hilary Hahn has more precision!
Vengerov has nothing! Absolutely noithing! Christian Ferras has aggression and diabolic attitude!
Vengerov has only monkey faces!!
Remember he (Vengerov) played better as teenager! Much better! So what happened?
maxhansendk 2 years ago
This version beats Vengerovs by many miles!!
maxhansendk 2 years ago
I don't agree with you. Maybe she has more precision than vengerov, but his agression and interpretation of this concert is absolutely unique.

I do agree with you.... the beauty of this concerto is mainly inside the music... but it's like if he was trying to do more than just the music... whatever... I think Hilary Hahn totally understood this concerto !

hilary hahn es una tipa demasiado espectacular.. toca el violin super arrechisimo.. me encana o_o

No-one beats Hahn for precision.

This is a great video and much credit for the soloist. As far as the Orchestra, which is very good, this really brings alive the flutes, clarnets and basoons. For a concerto, I am amazed of how difficult the Orchestra parts are.

Incredibly sophisticated.
Of course, neither a very impressive performance nor my favourite rendition; but wow, she knows how to play this piece. Intonation, bow control, precision - it's all there.

I concur. Especially the precision aspect.

This performance is absolutely stunning!

Hahn is a phenominal violinist.

yes in fact she is a phenominal violinist but i can't help notice that she is so perfect that makes me belive that she's really cold no offence.
carlosking007 3 years ago
i dont think shes cold at all!
imaginationkid14 3 years ago
You practically stole my brain on Hilary Hahn. Haha, well I have nothing to argue over with that comment.
However carlosking007, I think Hahn focuses on the perfection, yet I feel she does add her own finesse to the pieces she plays.

just fuck her already..... lol.
And the clearness really comes from the instrument, which is a MACHINE in itself.
Shadowtech666 3 years ago
Seriously, that is some playing of that piece. She looks about 14, but what a cool customer with fire for the feeling of the music. Amazing.

If you want a flawless of the Brahms Violin Concerto, get a recording of Hilary Hahn playing it. It is undoubtedly the best recording I've heard of the Brahms. Of course she's aged a few years between Siblius and Brahms, but she still does play magnificently nonetheless
