watching this fight again and again, i have no doubt, prime frazier would kick the ass of holmes,he would avoid his jab with his bobbing and weaving. larry holmes is overrated
Probably most forgotten, is the fact that Larry would have tied Marciano's 49-0 record if he had not made that stupid remark on HBO prior to the 1st fight, stateting: " Marciano couldn't carry my Jock Strap! I think there were a couple of Marciano fans as judges. Because he won that first fight. But pissed off the wrong people. The decision in my opinion was clear. Did we not see knock downs by Holmes? Larry was great,.. but never smart in the press. And so it is as it is. Simple as that.
Holmes is overrated in my view, he glorifies himself on beating a 40 year old Ali with Parkinson's Syndrome. Not to mention his best opponents were Past their prime Norton and Shavers, he went life and death with Shavers and Norton gave him all he could handle and barely squeezed out a SD win.
@vladiator100 I think someone, (YOU) needs to look at the title bout betyween Holmes and Norton again. Over rated? You haven't watched those old fights in years have you. Fought nobody? That's almost funny. Please note whom Holmes ducked from that period and respond back. I dare you to come up with a valid contender he did not fight. OK? :) It's all you now.
@Ghstwn He fought everyone and most of that everyone were weak opposition. His reign included fighters of a weak heavyweight division. I dare you to mention any true great fighters he beat during his reign besides old and fading Shavers, Norton....maybe you can come up with Marvis Frazier? Its all you now...
@vladiator100 I'm not taking dares here. Nor am I going to do your homework for you. Look up his entire record and view it for yourself. Just the fact that you made that dare tells me you don't know much. If you can't recognize the qualified fighters he encountered as the 2nd longest reigning Heavyweight Champion, (20 defences, Joe Lewis 25) then you are not even qualified to comment with me. No matter what you think of the division at the time. Every era of boxing has a different mix. Get real.
Unbelievable the technician Holmes was, movement was deliberate and not just running, using angles smartly, fast hands, amazing jab. Damn, I miss the days when heavyweights who were athletes and not just lumbering giants looking to land one punch.
@whitedeviltx Tough to say, but Larry Holmes definetely had skills to give anybody in heavyweight history a hell of a fight. He is the most underrated HW champion of all times in my book - unbeliveable considering his long reign as champion.
The fight was ended prematurely I think. Spinks still had some juice left. Although he didn't have much of a defensive plan for Holmes. I must admit Holmes looked fucking awesome. Scary.
but after all Leon Spinks showed courage and skill here. He was just a little too valiant to going to war with the stronger Holmes in the 3rd Round. He should have stayed on his fighting plan of the 2nd Round, then he would have gone in the higher Rounds. He was famous beiing better in the 13th, 14th and 15th Round.
@Panthera0nca Yeah that's true, but after that, who remembered fighters who won won an Olympic gold medal and never had a big professional career ? No place in medias for amateur bouts.
leon did need a better chin, it is all, because his style gave the hell to holmes in the first rounds.

WOW Larry holmes only weighted 212 lbs - almost a cruserweight.
Tex200950 6 months ago
@Tex200950 How is 212 almost a cruserweight? Isn't that like saying a pint is almost a quart? ;) DOH!

Not to mention he got beat by a much smaller man in Michael Spinks TWICE.

Best career opponents for Holmes
Norton- 35 years old
Shavers- 34 years old

Great fight - watch the speed of both Holmes and Spinks - today´s champs are boxing in slow-motion !

Yes, even today Leon Spinks could be a real title threat. He showed a good performance here.

Howard completely missed the key blow. A Holmes right at 9:36 was what hurt Spinks, and was the beginning of the end.

This was a lamb to the lion slaughter. The only more lopsided victories for Holmes were his beatings of Marvis Frazier and Muhammad Ali.

In fact the only title of glory for L.Spinks it's his victory versus old and parkinsonian Ali... no big deal. Without that he never be famous.

Maybe he'd never have been famous without the Ali win but the guy also won an Olympic gold medal. Point taken though :0)
