  • Go Doug Yeo!

  • It's a very interesting instrument! I saw only three of it in Brazil. Very rare, indeed. But I like its sound.

  • i was just looking up videos for tuba and found contrabass stuff and then this there is instraments out there i didnt evin think was posible lol like the double contrabass flute is on here man and i thought i knew all the instraments bc my life is basicly music and im only 15. hmmm lets see what else i can find

  • I just discovered this instrument while checking out info on a Tuba. I love the tone. Wish I knew where to find one.

  • this is what happens when a Euphonium and a Bassoon have sex...

  • @BillytheT19 Ha, ha! Great comment! Greetings from Brazil.

  • what size of its mouthpiece?

  • Probably much the same as a trombone or bass trombone mouthpiece.

  • sounds like a basson, tuba, trumpet, and mabey a french horn got smushed together

  • no, nothing similar to sax, clarinet or bassoon...very differentm, fingering is on the internet somewhere. brass mouthpiece and keys have all disappeared . Not too stable.

  • It sounds almost like a bassoon...

  • yeah i agree my mom is a professionnal bassoon player and it does sound kinda the same

  • it sounds quite good, a very warm clear sound, but it also looks very hard to play.

  • Dostoyevsky.

  • to me here it sounds like a combination between trombone and bassoon. just an opinion...

  • It does.

  • it's strange, i only found out about this after my music prof. mentioned it in class and he sort of emphasized what a strange sound it has, but it sounds like a brass instrument to me nothing strange about that

  • I found out about it from my professor too. He jokingly mentioned that it sounded so bad that they had to invent the tuba, and no one plays the ophicleide today.

It sound much more beautiful here than it did in the piece we had to listen to in class.

  • is it an instrument hard to play? is the fingering similar to any other instrument, like the sax, clarinet or bassoon? thanks

  • The sax prototype was an ophicleide with a clarinet's mouthpiece. The large tone holes are a clue. It sounds more like a cross between a trombone and French horn.

  • yep,with just a hint of bassoon.

  • Some editing would help...and maybe if you made it to the end. Lovely sound quality, though.

Years ago, I sat next to a guy in the bus who was doing a crossword. The first clue he attempted was "Police hide instrument (10)", right in the middle. Somehow he missed the obvious answer "ophicleide", and put some other crap in. He then proceeded to fill the whole bloody crossword with almost entirely wrong answers to fit around this initial faux pas. I suppose it was funny, but it made me wince.

  • I've never heard one of these before, I've only heard of them. They have such a nice sound!

  • Would a more smaller and more resistant mouthpeice help play it?

  • I want to play this SO bad!! The ophicleide, I mean!
