Very interesting and concise analysis here by Gordon. It feels sooooo good to have people like him in our world; rather than the regular splatter-gore fest with no actually constructive and efficient scripting...I'm becoming a big fan of this Gordon character...
This happens to be the very best movie Stuart Gordon's ever done. It's the best script, and Ezra Gordon is fantastic in it. Not to mention unbelivably hot! Yes I went fan grrl.
I just saw Dagon last month and you're right about Ezra. Absolutely gorgeous. But Dreams in the Witch-House is an awful horror movie / episode. It was probably a great story in print. But most of Lovecraft's stuff doesn't make good film adaptations. From Beyond was better than this.
Ezra has gotten better since Dagon to DITWH. Your right about HP's written works, but that's only because most people can visualize it better than rinky dink FX could afford. Think of this as better because 1-it's shorter, HP's work is mostly internal contemplation & observations. Not actual dialogue. So under an hr is better than a feature film of this & a guy in a poorly done rubber Chtulu suit. It wasn't terrifying, but it was edgier than Stu's earlier style & more artistic IMHO.
I don't care about edgy (though, did you notice he took that naked witch scene from Kubrick's The Shining?), I care about entertaining. DitWH was boring, not scary, and rickety. Awkward, slow, lame, and melodramatic. Gordon has his own style yes, but From Beyond was just a better example of how entertaining an adaptation can be. It was a lot more fun than this was. Even if it didn't have Ezra in it. Dreams even pushes logic. Anyone would have known to trust the old man. Except this loser.

Actually... I hated Re-Animator, and Dolls seriously needed to be re-worked. This looks like the best thing he's ever made.
