I saw this episode a few weeks ago. It turns out that the killer found about his rejection for a mortgage and felt betrayed by the victim. Back in those days there were certain people who felt it was patriotic to be bigot.

I still wish they've included Harve Presnell's character in the final montage. Maybe have him approving a mortgage for a black family, or joining his sister to meet Julian's family. It's a shame they didn't since this episode turned out to be his final appearance.
