He has a hipshot bass extender on the E string that he's tuning down to a B and then tuning it back up with his other hand... I've been trying it for the last few minutes, takes a lot of coordination...
Right, I was just referring to this particular song- it can be played with just a single hipshot on the E string making it "accessible" for people with typical basses (well, 99% of it anyway :)
Pretty sure he has something like a Hipshot D-Tuner... a device that allows him to tune his E string down to B and back with the flick of a lever. Never seen it used in the middle of a song before! Amazing.
wow whenever i watch manring play its always incredible, no one nowadays sounds like him, hes just so out there with his creativity and awesomeness that hes truly one of a kind
michael is one of those guys that make me laugh my ass off whenever i hear him play...it's just rediculous that he can play the way he does. victor wooten, aram bedrosian, steve bailey; people that can just go to some other level of playing just tickles me silly. wow...
flats will also sound a lot warmer and dark, which doesnt do a percussive song such as this the definition and ping it needs, plus flats produce a mwahh like tone
OMG!! michael came into college once and really opened my eyes to the extent you can push the bass to...a real legend!!! imagination, technique and pure talent all in one
Guys, this man rocks: whether you like him or not, everyone MUST recognize his courage in starting a new approach to bass playing, just like Jaco did 30 years ago, and defintely opening a new horizon to innovative bass playing. I love those who start something new, and don't just copy and paste everything.
I really think people should stop screaming about who's better: Jaco, Manring, Wooten, Flea, Entwistle...you should learn from them instead of making a mess about it
flea is only a dumbass: he should learn playing the bass from michael manring, wojtec pilichowsky, billy sheehan and victor wooten that the best bassplayers of the world
I am a big Flea's fan, i think he is the best ROCK bass player, i think he is better than Claypool, or some jazz players (Wooten), but since i knew Manring, I know he is the best bass player.
He just played this song among others at a concert here in Guatemala. Amazing concert and what a humble guy. Even signed autographs at the end for everybody.
I've seen this guy in person...his playing really rattled me. And I've shook his hand hoping that our talents would magically swap in the process. Eh, didn't happen...I still suck. He is one of the kindest people I've met. His bass skill goes without saying.
This is the definition of 'Mastery'. Manring has reached a level of skill almost inconceivable to most people, and can just let flow pieces of incredible complexity, yet unerring musicality...
There is so much going on, It really trips me out. <br> but it's still really listenable and enjoyable.<br>compared to vic Woot, who just seems to be playing as fast, as possible for the sake of playing as fast as possible. IMO Vic is only impressive or popular to other bassists/musicians
I really doubt that many non bassists would listen to this for the sake of the music. I have Manring's new album Solioqouy so I'm not hating, just aknowledging the fact that this isn't exactly the most accessible music. For one, it's the bass and on top of that it's sort of New Age music which about .05% of the population actually listens to. Anyways, have you even seen Wooten's more laid back side? Watch the DMB vid or the Amazing Grace vid, he has the crowd in the palm of his hand.
Manring is simply a superb, talented bassist! Like all great bassists, this comes from a natural aptitude towards the instrument you play, and pure hard graft! Practice, practice and more practice. I should know, I'm a bassist too!
In your opinion Victor Wooten is better but in my opinion Manring is better and plus they play differently from each other. They both play in someways better than each other.
hahaha, you fools have misunderstood what I said. I mean he's good but not as good as Victor Wooten. If you disclude Wooten, then you can say he's the best. I'm not racist at all..... But I don't like the race you come from espgryffyn (The race of Morons)
audio is off sinc, but that's a problem common for transfering from PAL-5 (french standard), but that makes little difference. Micheal still kicks my butt. Ever since "Drastic Measures" (Windham Hill, 1992) the world of bass guitar has been irreprably damaged. Long live the Manthing!
..TEACH ME THESE WAYS. I wish I could play like this.. I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it <333333
