I had the great honor and privilege of petting and feeding two of these beautiful Sumatran Rhinos at the Cincinnatti Zoo last August. These are very beautiful animals who must be preserved.
They have a strange kind of cuteness about them. When I was first approached about the project I told the producer, 'C'mon no one's going to warm to these creatures are they - they're ugly?!?' But after working with them in the flesh for a few weeks, I saw their personality and now I think they're cute even when they are dripping with mud!
I have been a huge rhino fan all of my life (I am 47). I am so glad to see that they are taking action to save these creatures. FYI, the only place in the Western Hemesphere that has a Sumatran in captivity is the Cincinnatti Zoo. (She just gave birth to a baby in April, 2007). I haven't been there yet, but plan to go sometime this year.
It is really good to spread the news on the decreasing numbers of sumtran rhinos this way. That is why i am proud to support this idea, together with the Asian Rhino Foundation, a Dutch organisation funding Sumatran rhino saving projects!
i love rhinos, all rhinos! I am working on earning an internship at the Cinncinatti zoo OH just so I can work with sumatran rhinos! Amazing footage, loved it! <3
These rhinos stand only as high as a man's chest and develop a furry coat of hair when deprived of a mud wallow. If you watch carefully at 1.03 to 1.07 you can see the small remnant of a second horn.
I assure you that these are Sumatran Rhinos. In the wild, these creatures develop two long horns, but in captivity in a cement enclosure most of the time, they get blunted. That's because when they try to sharpen their horns, they actually wear them down.
We filmed them here in this setting only when they were released into the natural habitat for breeding.
My gosh. They're so beautiful. This clip has brought tears to my eyes. I am planning to buy the DVD when it comes out. Keep it up, you guys are doing a wonderful thing here.
Glad you enjoyed it! We hope to have some more clips ready soon. you can register for alerts at our site

Dear asiageographic , am an undergrad in conservation biology and was curious where this footage was shot . Also am going to Sumatra in November to undertake community based conservation work in November. However would love to be associated with a Sumatran Rhino specific project in the future , is there much scope for further research in the future ?
Hi, This footage was shot in Sungai Dusun, Peninsula Malaysia. Current research is taking place at Cincinnati Zoo, where successful captive births have been achieved recently. There's also a captive breeding programme in Sabah at the Sepilok Wildlife Centre (where the orang utan reserve is), which features in our video. Also try SOSrhino. Cheers and have a good trip

Kissing Rhinos. Whew hoo!
There once was a rainforest rhiny
whose rainforest range became tiny.
He said with a frown, "My home's now a town!
So help save my rainforest heiny."
That was by me. I just made it up. I was inspired.

A great story to spread Mike. Looks like it could turn into your life's work with only 300 remaining..
Interesting to see the female take up position behind a damn great log! Sort of mixed messages she's giving out.
Great quality.

Hey Bruce,
Thanks for the encouragement. There's a lot to be done here! With such an unknown creature, it's really hard to build momentum needed to save them!

Action man!
I'm just finishing up some notes - I'll put them on my site again for SMCC members.
