Hey im a ''post player'' im 6'3 9th grader but i dont really know how to play post i score 15-20 points a game but thats from rebounds im really well know for rebounds over every one but my teammates call me a ''weak post '' i also cross alot in the post i know i shouldnt but any help??
@SnipeWith3 Go to our post videos on our YT channel and these will probably help. Early this spring we will be posting many new workout drills that will help you.
@supergreenpunk You post him exactly the same way you would if he was your size. Being smaller you probably will be a bit quicker and so use your quickness against him. Use this gauge for how to beat him: If you can feel him on your body attack him with a dribble move; If you cannot feel him "face-up" to the basket and look to shoot it or fake a shot and attack him.
@ShotScience This was just the first video of yours that I watched- I ended up watching a lot of them last night...they're really well-done; thank you for them!
@blackyasha Are they reach around you and tapping the ball away? If so, get your butt into their legs and extend your arms toward the passer. Call for they ball in spots where they cannot reach. On catching the ball "Chin the ball up" for protection and into what we call "A position of Power."
@ShotScience Thx for the help May u also help me with How to shoot over them ? i get the moves and all but there reach most of the time blocks me or tips my shot away
@blackyasha Are they tapping the ball away? If so get your butt into their legs and extend your arms toward the passer. Give targets for the pass in areas where they cannot reach. If they are stepping around you learn to use "crab steps" to maintain your seal on them.
@85jennings Well on defense it would be a good idea to front them so they cannot catch the ball and use their size on you. If they are bigger but not very offensive you can play behind or to the ball side. When you are on offense attack them aggressively off the dribble and use up-fakes to finish. Try to move away from the basket so they have to come out to guard you then attack them.
i am defending a player that uses his elbows to gain leverage by hooking me with his elbows around my abdomen and then pushing off with the elbow. is this a legal move?
Hey coach, I have a problem posting up whenever my defender is a quick one and with long arms. I can't seal him properly 'coz often times he is able to tap the ball. How do I avoid this without losing the position I want to be in?
@MARKSMAN2318: We often allow our hands to be too close to our body on the catch and it is easy to reach around. Make you target extended toward the passer and then get into the "Position of Power."
Dude your amazing. I'm gonna look for more of your videos relating to guard techniques. I'm a 5'11 baller in Jr.High, that has his strengths in the post. But my coach has decided to start me as shooting guard this year. it's quite a challenge, and I need to learn some basics.
Is catching balls thrown at a wall a good drill for catching? Or are there better ones? Please tell me what drill u recommend to improve catching cos I have butter fingers and it isn't good if i want to play bball
@Rockflame: Catching balls rebounding off walls is a good idea to help hands. One we like is to play catch with another player and catch with only one hand. Here let your hand recoil on the catch to control the speed of the pass. You can also hold the ball with your hand under the ball and pinch it with all of your fingers to strengthen them. Mostly, play a lot of catch with the recoil. This softens the pass.
@ShotScience Coach, can you do a video about the different passing techniques and how to pass more further by doing the chest pass? i need to learn drills on passes since i'm a pointguard (14 years old)
Nice simple/basic vid. It's surprising how many people don't do this even at the pro level. The most annoying thing though is how a point will just stand at the top of the key with the ball and tell you to "go inside" thinking that getting position is only about you and not him, and then his pass totally ruins all your work to gain position.
Guys, I like this instruction for when your defender is standing 3-4 feet off you helping but how do you go about sealing and posting up if you do not have the room to pivot and create space with your forearm (ie he is all over you regardless of where the ball is)
@pokerrich9 Very similarly, you want to face them and step across they're body and Pivot to Inhibit. It's a little hard to explain in text, but you step over the top of their foot or across their body, get your butt down low into their body, and turn with both hands out and elbows up. Does that make sense? That's probably a video we'll make down the road. Thanks for the question!
@pokerrich9: Well if the ball is away to the offside and away from you he should be in Help defense and therefore off you. As the ball swings back, that is the time to use this sealing of the post. If he hugs you all the time he will be easy to beat when flashing to the ball as he will not have time to react to your cut.
@987654321shaymin: We will be posting up our "post Moves" in the near future. Hopefully this will answer your question as there are several good possibilities.
Coach, i make serious mental mistakes ( really embarassing ones) a lot of times in pickup games. I dunno why but i get all excited everytime and end up humiliating myself. Any advice?
@Rockflame: Hey Rock, you are taking all of this too serious. Most of the mental mistakes we make are due to a lack of experience. The people you play with, without question, make errors as well. If you make a mistake, learn from it and go on. There is absolutely no reason to feel humiliated. No player is perfect at any level. Worrying about this too much can destroy your confidence. Come on!!
I play against a quick post defender who plays off and behind me so I can't put a body on him to seal. What is the best method to receive the pass against that type of player?
I play against a quick post defender who plays off and behind me so I can't put a body on him to seal. What is the best method to receive the pass against that type of player?
@apotheosis29 if he's playing off, you can get the ball for a quick turn-around jumper, or a turn-around to shot fake then take it to the basket, or you can use the tips from this video to seal him. All you have to do is step in on him (so go and meet him) and then use your pivot-to-inhibit. If he's playing behind and off, you might be able to pin him way down under the basket, in which case he's in BIG TROUBLE!
@24B423: Hey 24, we are always working on new videos. The problem is, to turn out high quality videos it takers time to do the filming work and then a ton of time to do the editing. Have patience! Thanks for your positive comment.

@B316903: Well, once they catch the ball you are in trouble! SO, don't let them catch the ball. You might front them so they cannot catch a direct pass and have your team mates help you on the lob over the top. We will address this in later videos.
Hey coach I play ball most around 5 to 6 times a week and just found your vids. I was wondering I lift but am a hard gainer so I dont have to much power underneath for defense. How do I play against a bigger more muscular defender?? Would love some help and very good videos.
@B316903: Well, they can only hurt you when they have the ball. Don't allow them to catch it by fronting them. You are probably quicker than the big guys so use this to your advantage.
Hey coach, I was wondering how to win over a team with zone defense.Next year my team is going to play with teams that only use zone defense.I have heard that passing can break it, is that true?
@Henhani: Great question. We take a little different appraoch to attacking the zone defense. We have several sets of formations that we use against certain defnses and then our attack is based upon "Seven Attack Principles." Passing is just one of them. We will try to get this up as in the near future. Thanks for your question.
i was wondering how you would get a rebound off of somebody way taller and bigger than you because when i box him out he just puts his arms over my head and pulls it down so what do i do
@marlin23100: Make sure on the box out that you have your bum (ass) into his knees hard . Sometimes, when they are much bigger than you it's hard to block them out and keep them from going over you. When he goes over the top you can flop forward and maybe get a foul on him. This is very tough!
@ejaypinoy: Absolutely, seal him! The man in the middle is the key to protecting the middle. He probably will not try to step over the top on you, but maintain the position behind. POST HIM UP!!!!
just wondering ... when defending in the post and having your forearm out is it legal to push forward a lil with your forearm while the guy is trying to back you down? i am not extending my arm just applying pressure to maintain guarding position only when player is trying to back me down? help please
fyi @ 23kalboako! backing down is legal but when you have legal guarding position and the heavier fellas try to shoulder / body his way down its an offensive foul.
@givmeDloot: 23kalboako has the answer for you. Unfortunately, even when we try ot hold our ground under the rules, the offensive player gets the nod from officials.
great question and hope we and 23kal were able to offer somehelp.
@23kalboako: We recommend that you use different tactics against these heavy players. Remember this, "If they have contact on you, you can beat them off the dribble; ie. drop step, spin move and other moves that we will soon have up for you.
The closer they play the easier they are to beat. Muscling with the "back-down" would be great if you were huge, however, substitute brain power for muscle power and clean their clock!
This is excellent information. I'm a little worried about teaching the forearm wall properly because the natural inclination is to use the forearm as a lever to push off. I will give it a try and let you know our progress. Good stuff!
@ucoll83: Hey Jason, we think you will be fine as long as the forearm is not really like a football rip, but instead placed out to stop the defender from closing the gap. One problem for most players is that don't know how to seal the defender and then control them. Let us know how your guys do. We are coming out with more on post play and a series of moves. We are looking forward to getting this video out soon. So much to do and so little time!
is there a video for where you position the ball anyways where do you position the ball i had remembered but i forgot i keep thinking its from the side but idk
slay: We will have a video up soon on this. We like to get the ball into the "Power Position" which is up under our chin. Check our video "The Diamond" for info on this skill. Stay tuned for more, especially our new "STREET TEAM."
hey shotscience, I have two questions one i have one really good move to beat someone off the dribble but i can't keep using tht one move what are a few more moves i could use to get past the defender. second in the post i have one move the hook what are a few other moves in the post? THnks
jaki: Thanks for your comment. The moves are coming. It's nice to be able to catch the ball first and then the moves. Stay tuned as we can only do so much. The moves are already filmed, but editing takes awhile. They are coming.
Tall: Nope that isn't legal!! We plan to have more information up soon on post moves and how to deal with these kinds of things. One thing that you can do, is when he grabs your shirt "Spin and go" and he should be exposed. One other thing to remember is, the closer he plays to you the easier he is to beat. Stay tuned for our post play video.
Well, if you watched the Interactive video, it will tell you why you're missing your shots off to the left. It's probably because you aren't finishing at the basket, but off to the left. Check out that video again and really work at getting all the elements in place. If you're able to, you can post a video of yourself shooting and we can take a look at it.
Nice! Keep up the good work. This is one of the best channels to learn about basketball skills. Come to think of it, I think this is the only channel on YouTube that does that. You guys should be proud. Again, thanks for the video.
This is actually the area that most players lack and it is necessary to have this down before you can learn specific moves. Once you have sealed the defender properly there are many ways to attack them which we will address in future videos!
Chase is right on. Most guys forgo sealing their man and wonder why they don't have good position or don't get the ball enough. If you get a good seal, you're man is at a REAL disadvantage! The post moves are upcoming, but work on your seal!!
hey i really need help ok when i shoot the basketball why does the ball tend to shift a little to the other direction how do i make it to were i can make the ball go straight i really need help i have big dreams i neeed to no what im doing wrong plz help me.
The first thing you should do is check out our video called "Interactive Shooting Guide." It will help you diagnose your problem. If you're still having trouble, get back to us.
Great! Sealing is a huge part of playing in the post! Make sure you are loud and demand the ball! Call for your teamates attention to throw you the ball!!!!
I notice alot of guys fold their arms back to form a ( A ) shape with their arms to lock the defensive man in back of them. Is this a legal move? Which would be the most efficient move ? Folding the arms back (A form) or to keep the arms out to the sides of our body?
top dog. It is a foul if you reach behind you or even if you arms are straight to the side and the defense touches your arm. Your arms have to be at least above parallel. The best thing to do is bend your arms to a 90 degree angle and use your elbows to keep the defender behind you!
Chase is right. Those elbows are sharp and aren't any fun to run into. The best thing about them is that if your have your wings up, it isn't going to be called on your if your man is trying to wrestle around you. As soon as you reach those arms around like your describe, they usually call you on it because you're holding the guy. We'll try and do a video on this in the future. Thanks for the comment!!
uzman: Thanks for your coment. Regarding stamina, go to our channel and check out Chase's video on athletic conditioning. He's the man on this topic.
Thanks, I just got assigned to center today on my team in a league and the coach was telling me to do a bunch of stuff. This is great and really useful, thanks again shotscience :D

the last game i played when i posted up my defender grabbed my shirt and that way he knew where i was going ... is that even legal ?
Tall747 2 years ago
Tall: Nope that isn't legal!! We plan to have more information up soon on post moves and how to deal with these kinds of things. One thing that you can do, is when he grabs your shirt "Spin and go" and he should be exposed. One other thing to remember is, the closer he plays to you the easier he is to beat. Stay tuned for our post play video.

it still happends the ball still goes to the left help me plz i want to be in the nba i have big dreams
asboobsred 2 years ago
Well, if you watched the Interactive video, it will tell you why you're missing your shots off to the left. It's probably because you aren't finishing at the basket, but off to the left. Check out that video again and really work at getting all the elements in place. If you're able to, you can post a video of yourself shooting and we can take a look at it.

but where are the real postmove a lot of players have good position, but then ... they don't what to do
gigabastian 2 years ago
This is actually the area that most players lack and it is necessary to have this down before you can learn specific moves. Once you have sealed the defender properly there are many ways to attack them which we will address in future videos!
chasecurtiss 2 years ago
Chase is right on. Most guys forgo sealing their man and wonder why they don't have good position or don't get the ball enough. If you get a good seal, you're man is at a REAL disadvantage! The post moves are upcoming, but work on your seal!!
ShotScience 2 years ago
hey i really need help ok when i shoot the basketball why does the ball tend to shift a little to the other direction how do i make it to were i can make the ball go straight i really need help i have big dreams i neeed to no what im doing wrong plz help me.
asboobsred 2 years ago
The first thing you should do is check out our video called "Interactive Shooting Guide." It will help you diagnose your problem. If you're still having trouble, get back to us.
ShotScience 2 years ago
thank you so much shotscience, i just learned some post moves and this is a great video to get set up
darkklegacy 2 years ago
Great! Sealing is a huge part of playing in the post! Make sure you are loud and demand the ball! Call for your teamates attention to throw you the ball!!!!
chasecurtiss 2 years ago
No problem! We'll be posting some post moves up so that you can seal the deal!
ShotScience 2 years ago
I notice alot of guys fold their arms back to form a ( A ) shape with their arms to lock the defensive man in back of them. Is this a legal move? Which would be the most efficient move ? Folding the arms back (A form) or to keep the arms out to the sides of our body?
topdog781 2 years ago
top dog. It is a foul if you reach behind you or even if you arms are straight to the side and the defense touches your arm. Your arms have to be at least above parallel. The best thing to do is bend your arms to a 90 degree angle and use your elbows to keep the defender behind you!
chasecurtiss 2 years ago
Chase is right. Those elbows are sharp and aren't any fun to run into. The best thing about them is that if your have your wings up, it isn't going to be called on your if your man is trying to wrestle around you. As soon as you reach those arms around like your describe, they usually call you on it because you're holding the guy. We'll try and do a video on this in the future. Thanks for the comment!!
