  • Man, Cogs In Cogs still rattles my bones.

  • i may have seen them between 73 and 80 25 times, and seeing this still blows my pants off. i dont care what the punk movement said about the progressive music, the musicianship of these guys is beyond anyone else, except yes in 73 till bruford quit, and genesis with gabriel. zappa, too. corea, McLaughlin, man you needed to have chops.

THIS IS F'NG LIVE! no autotune. thanks for sharing.....

  • two stupids listen Justin Bieber

  • I love prog, but it bothers me that they just sit there and watch. Just because you are standing up and maybe dancing or clapping your hands or anything like doesn't mean your not appreciating the music. I feel that is one of the reasons of why prog died, people were promoted to silently listen, and they got sick of it.

  • The drummer is a muppet and the keyboard guy is a scooby doo wizard villain and George Jefferson is the reason I'm watching this... And after listening to the music that all makes perfect sense!

  • Weird, did people actually play instruments and not repeat themselves 100 times in songs back then?

  • Derek Shulman looks like a Friggin' Mage!

  • hey wes b,, way to go

  • i clicked because i thought charles manson was singin....

  • The live version of Proclamation is really the best version/ best song ever/best song evah/ evahh

  • George Carlin is the drummer!!!

    lol

  • @MatheusRamos96 Yeah, but what a groove!

  • @MatheusRamos96 He went to the future in his time-travelling phone booth, then came back and made this.

  • Geeminee Krickets!!!

  • whoever put up this awesome footage thanks. Seeing these guys jam this amazingly complex song with ease and looking like they are having fun doing it is just such a testament to how great they were.

  • Underrated band of Scottish Jews. Spock's Beard owes much to Giant.

  • @thegreenolivo

Scottish, you say? Three of them (the Schulman brothers) were raised in Portsmouth in a musical background, their father was an Orchestra conductor, according.to the Wikipedia page dedicated to them. Jews or not, they're brilliant by any standards. But ok, watching these videos in 2012 is a totally different experience, I agree. Besides, in Portugal they very seldom came on Tv.

  • @luismariasilva They were unique, unfortunately I don't think they were on tv much anywhere.

  • Let's see you F***ED UP RAPPERS make REAL music like THIS. Oh, what?.. You dumbed America down too much to go back you say? I BELIEVE YOU.

  • John Weathers, Gentle Giant drummer, says this is his favorite video by the band!

  • My all time favourite band. Incredible music, supremely talented musicians.

  • @moog75 yeah that's right,THE greatest most underated band ever

  • Sick world indeeeed. While it is sad, I feel like the fact that these guys did not receive as much recognition as all the crap on commercial radio makes Gentle Giant what they are–a gentle giant that doesn't need recognition nor ask for it because they are giants above the musical norm. I think fame and radio play might have inhibited their growth as a beautiful band, and as for more recognition, perhaps that would have been an imposition on the giants. I wouldn't want to get stomped on :)

  • ray shouldve grown a beard, and derek shouldve shaved his off. Agreed?

  • 2:05 lol that key noise! GG is "beautiful insanity" sort of

  • @vishiquals Absolutely spot on correct.

  • JOHN WEATHERS SEXIST MAN ALIVE

  • for anyone who hasn't figured it out, this video leads into Funny Ways which is also up on youtube. also a good watch.

  • WOW

  • Essa banda é do caralho!!!!!

  • great upload

  • Let me explain the difficulty Derek is having in singing. See, on the studio album, his voice was recorded first before the back up vocals as this keeps them from pulling down the voice of the lead singer. He is doing a great job considering. His voice makes a lot of things possible. Plus he was a multi - instrumentalist himself which helped the group bridge between riffs when it became necessary to exchange instruments.

  • Hopefully great groups like this will emerge again, and hit the top--in the way Yes and ELP, Rush, etc made it!(And Genesis and others I left out! Today, if this group were still young and in their prime, with media exposure, they would be at the top because there are still us older folks who grew up in the 60's, 70's and 80's and love and appreciate great music! Peace, BobbyK

  • Greatest band ever! Glad I got to see them live twice. :)

  • I hate how no one in the drummer world appreciates John Weathers... He is my favorite drummer (i'm 16, and won't fall for the Mainstream bullshit), and he did great things. He just enjoys his instrument and doesn't care what anybody else thinks... It's a shame that people like Travis Barker, yet all he does is pound on random shit... I'm starting an instrumental project called QAN, (THIS TYPE OF PROG, and I need a guitar player, keyboardist, and bassist).... anyone interested, send me a message.

  • @startrooper64 Great percussion is a prerequisite for timeless music. Gentle Giant definately had that.

  • @startrooper64 I agree! I used to defend him all the time. My friends would say they needed Phil Collins, but John is so damn funky! He played exactly what was needed and did it well!

  • Gentle Giant are the modern day Mozarts

Mozart experimented with eerie sounds, sudden transitions through his movements, tricking the audience by making you think the song is almost over but then they pull out an amazing full re-entry into the main song (if you don't look at how much time is left as the audience cannot)...

Gentle Giant does these in a new and fascinating way, and really are the best musicians that i have had the pleasure to listen to.

  • @MokRodrigues, I like Prologue and Peel the Paint from 3 Friends, but not so much Working All Day or Mr. Class and Quality. Plain Truth is good on Aquiring the Taste. And I like Advent of the Panurge, A Dog's Life, Think of Me with Kindness, and Knots on Octopus.

  • @vishiquals Well, keep on going on your prog journey! I am playing some progressive with a keyboard player, who is a friend of mine, and we really enjoy it, 'cause it's complex, but sounds great!

  • @vishiquals Well, keep on spreadin' them! It's nice you have finally found this Prog legend out!

  • What is really curious about GG (and Yes too) is that the backing vocals are really complex. This group is amazing!

  • @vishiquals Its nice to know the younger generation is picking up on this music. I think it has stood the test of time.

  • @videocanone Yeah! I am 17 years old and really love these guys' sound...

  • I think most of the albums are still available on CD in various forms. My favorites are "In a Glass House" , "The Power and the Glory", "Freehand", and "Interview", although I also like some of the tunes on "The Missing Piece". There are also some good tunes on "Octopus" and "Three Friends". I am less familiar with their other albums.

  • @videocanone Man, Three Friends is one of the best in my opinion. Prologue is a masterpiece, along with the title track.

  • Great Band. Saw them once after they did the Civilian album. They did mostly the earlier stuff like on this video. Very tight. Great sound system at a rock club called Toad's Place in New Haven, Ct. USA

  • @videocanone Shit, I hate being born in the 1990's....

  • @videocanone

Wow. I was in New Haven at that time, wanting desperately to go to the show, but was underage. Spent the night working at Ashley's Ice Cream.

  • John Weathers showin' his "Oh" face

  • holy... everyone who listen to this band is at least 3% hippie.

  • @picturedope

    Flowerpower sucks

  • prog used to sell

  • saatanallis-perkeleellistä...

  • I think I might be responsible for half of those 20,000 views

  • @leonardojef And I am responsible for the other half....

  • @leonardojef

and me for the other half. LOL

  • its a sick fucking world where Katy Perry and Kanye West have achieved incredible success and a band like Gentle Giant gets nearly no recognition. really fucking sad

  • @WesB The biggest crime of the century-they are the greatest band ever

  • @WesB Sick fucking world indeed, good sir. Sad but true.

  • @WesB Brother, I feel your pain! But these horrendous singers/musicians today get all of the media coverage to glorify the crap they put out today! If this group had media exposure today, they would be at the top of the heap and sell 25 million CD's! I can't stand another second of the mindless music known as rap-hip-hop! It is horrible crap, where you need no vocal talent, or skill to play your own instruments to music you actually wrote yourself! Peace, Bro!

  • The world's not sick. It's just a testament to your ability to recognize true musical genius and mastery at work, and how the programmed commercial world thinks they've reached musical Nirvana when they hear bandwagon bullshit like Katy Perry and Kanye . As a fusion enthusiast of the 70s you should have realized years ago that you / we travel on a superior musical plain far above most whose virgin ears will never experience and appreciate the real work of musical masters . Marvel in it.

  • @WesB Not so sad... I don't know who perry and west are, never heard about them, but I know good well who GG are !!!!!

    This stuff is fantastic.

  • @WesB Never more true words spoken. Please see my channel for gentle giant bass playing shortly....thanks. Keep the legend alive in whatever way possible.................even if it means lookin at my vids!!!!

  • @WesB only for the money ...

  • My son is loving this band and he is .............10 years by 28 th of april

  • Love the wonder in Derek's eyes what does the audience think? Shoot they are just dumbfounded after Cogs. Proclamation loosens them up. AWESOME BAND!

  • the drummer's great.

  • they are so far advanced...i don't think they'll get their full recognition for another 50 years

  • i did the 100 like!!

  • The power and the glory: wonderful album!

  • I so dislike eggs, but I LOVE GG!!! Peerless. Then. and. now.....

  • They don't make bands like this anymore!

    These guys were geniuses!

  • real guitars, real drums, real live! my god what a bashing and smashing beginning i would have fell of my chair!

  • I am from Ireland and it's only thanks to the internet I can hear this stuff. It's impossible to get this stuff in record shops over here!!!!!

  • drumer as usual makes funny faces ))

  • 2:13 how bad-ass is Ray Shulman?

  • @kingcherub Seriously, he's just standing there, making this face like, "Ain't no thing, just playing some music."

  • Outstanding performance.

  • 21 Years here and this is my fav band.

    FUCK YEAH

  • wow outstanding im soo happy to be a 22 year old that aint into the rap crap

  • the bassist always has a look that he's enjoying a rather difficult shit...anyway i'm more of a fan of Proclamation, Cogs in cogs is just a bit too much

  • Capolavoro assoluto del progressive rock!!

    Una meraviglia assoluta.

    Genii musicali!!!!

  • I am also a real musician. I don't find their music intimidating or their vocals. I don't think that Knots is a difficult piece. Saying this, I will tell you that I love gentle giant because most of their music is just plain good. I don't give much attention to how difficult it is, because it doesn't sound difficult to me. I play music, and sing music that is very difficult.

  • @vishuiqual it's not about difficulty but originality. Knots is the best exemple of that, it's not hard but it's original, I mean, who thought that madrigal could be used in rock?? giant did

  • It is hard and it is difficult but what makes this good is more than just difficulty.

I am not impressed with difficulty as much as beauty, creativity and artistry.

Smart musicians are not afraid of playing simple music because sometimes things that are quite simple can be genius if it has the right elements behind it.

Real musicians who are talented are not impressed by people who play 12 notes a second, they are impressed with artistry and beauty.

  • Second song that i listen from GG. My opinion; pure art.

  • I have all the original LP's, and some bootlegs too... Saw them live in Rotterdam. Can't get enough.

  • Incroyable musique...

  • Inspiring. Loved it. epic crowd response 3:17 : ).

  • @sivnalem It was very very strange how they just sat there after this great piece.

    Not a sneeze.

  • @vishuiqual

I guess they were just blown away. I know I was when I saw them.

  • @gandlbass That is probable, of they don't know much about music. ahahah

  • @vishuiqual Yeah, this was not the kind of music that was being played. It really was different. I remember the first time I heard the band Yes I was blown away.

  • @gandlbass Musicians know how hard this is to play. Non musicians dont really know to play and sing like this takes talent.

  • REALLY PURE ART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Phenomenal and inspiring to me as a musician! Thankyou for the inspiration!!!!!

  • My favorite Gentle Giant song !!

  • What's the bass players Name? and what's he doing today?

  • OMG, John Weathers is so fucking awesome!!!

  • i think you can still see the knot on weathers forehead in this video, maybe thats where the song knots comes from lol anyway enjoy!

  • saw gg every night they played at the wiskey i was waiting to get in when they pulled up in a toyota mk1v when weathers got out he walked right into a telephone pole nasty not on his head, then when they went into the back door i noticed they knocked someone inside asked who it was and derek replied gentle giant door opens they go in then someone parks the toyota in the maagers space behind the club, a tow truck was called and was hooking up to the car when i went to the back to door kk who gg

  • John W has this great look like he's trying to pinch a loaf and have a kegel-induced orgasm at once. Riot!

  • john weathers is a maniac

  • thanks for this

  • I still have the original Playing the fool on vinyl. Still gets played frequently. In my opinion GG is very close to Focus in there style of play. And to a lesser extent Gryphon. I just got after 10 years of searching Red Queen to Gryphon 3 on CD!!!! Isn't life GREAT!!!! Thanks for this upload I've NEVER seem them live before. THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Why have I not heard of GG before? Ive just read some comments on youtube stating that this is the most underrated band ever. I cannot agree more. This is epic, to sad I was born in the 90s...

  • Great viedo the giant looks great .My date did not runn.

  • Saw them twice in the 70's in a venue justlike this one on the first row. I was is syncopation heaven!!!!!!!!! It had to be one of most excited mind blowing live performances ever!!!!!!!!!

  • ...Eh bien...A toi...Chante maintenant..et....Bonne Chance, vieux...

  • @ 4:40 john weathers is tripping balls LMAO!

  • Excellent post! What a great live performance.

  • both songs r soooo offkey but somehow they make it sound good....that takes true skill

  • Hahaha! On this video, Minnear really looks like the King of Hippies. And boy do I love the expression of Weathers starting at 4:39! Fantastic songs, I love the innovative genius of Gentle Giant!

  • Majestic band.

I grew up listening to this band, and they still sound new to me.

Actual bands can't match this sound or creativity.

  • I wanted to see them play this song Cogs in Cogs. Thanks for posting it. John Weathers the drummer really gets into it the way one should. He does a good job and he was one of my idles.

  • Колоритный барабанщик....

  • LOL that drummer. Need I say more?

  • @NightRanger77 hell yea...we all love John Weathers facemaking!!!

  • wow that drummer is funny

  • Cogs in cogs is such a piece of art!!

  • @leonardojef yea....i need the tabs to this....maybe a Gentle Giant Tablature book! so complex and hard to figure out

  • @leonardojef I think Cogs and Cogs is one of my very very favorities of their music or it is my favorite GG song so far. I am sure..it is HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's just fantastic. Punk had to happen but music has never recovered. Now skills are frowned upon in music. We have peaked as a species.

  • 1,999 views....what a shame. These guys were miles ahead of everyone else.

  • no one wants to be in a band like this i am gonna start one who wants to join it?

  • @jesuscomplex Oh god me please, Drummer here

  • me and my friends have started a GG tribute. at this point we know As old as you're young, just the same, and proclamation. next is this motherfucker!

  • @jesuscomplex I would. i had friends up at berklee college of music who i was in a gentle giant cover band with. We learned As Old As You're Young, Proclamation, and Just the Same. I learned this one and others on my own tho. FUN STUFF!!!

  • @jesuscomplex ill be gary green! :D just need to learn recorder....i knew flutophone at one point.....

  • @jesuscomplex good luck finding somebody who is a classically trained pianist/musician and is also an expert at playing the blues like kerry minnear!

  • @ACDC7369 i already have unfortunately he is playing the drums lol

  • @jesuscomplex tell him to get on keyboards!

  • @jesuscomplex WHO?.........GUESS WHO...Well, somebody asked me one day to work on this song...I still have the scars, even now...well, my dear friend...God bless you and.......GOOD LUCK...Hope the pain won't be too deep 4 U.....PEACE....Never Again, no, no....Thanks...

  • Both are awesome drummers!

  • oooohhhh genial....

  • PROGTASTIC!

  • Na na ive seen THAT it's one of them serious GERMAN audiences they are LISTENING

  • Proclamation= in the pocket. Actually, destroyed the pocket!!!

  • No band compares. When an older friend introduced me to the Giant, my mind was blown! Up was down, left right . . .etc. If i were there, I'd be slam dancing.

  • I simply love this JAM. Saw them in a club just like this in 76 on the second row. Could touch them. IT WAS A COMPLETE MIND EXPLODING EXPERIENCE

  • Yeah sparkola, I agree. This is one of the 'rockiest' GG numbers and the audience appears drugged.

  • One of my favorite bands!!!!!! Is the audience sleeping?
