Glorious music, but the Rhinemaidens are either wandering around in pistons to a 1952 Studebaker or cavorting in pneumatic tubes. Every time I get in the mood for a less traditional production, I wind up with something like this. Thank God for Otto Schenk.
@prchristman Otto Schenk started out in opera, 1963, with a brilliant LULU in Vienna, then went sour and created this non-think productions at the MET. Dreadful.
@rumpwrestler I'm anxious to see the upcoming new Met production of the Ring. My ideal is a production that's thought-provoking and challenging, and that allows me to see the operas in a new way. That's perhaps not Schenk, but the staging in this clip is more puzzling than anything else. Speaking only for myself, there's a disconnect here between story and music, and what I'm seeing. I much prefer Schenk to this, even though the best course might be a good middle ground.
My question was actually referring to the location in this production. I know what's happening in the original story, but am wondering how this set relates to it. On a visual level it's interesting, but it's like it's the perfect set for a totally different show.
Looks like Star wars ...

This really sucks, Bayreuth has really sunken to new lows. OMG to have Weiland Wagner alive again.

They certainly sound like they're swimming and flowing along.... but where exactly are they in this horrendous production?

Great singing here and good orchestra , but dont know if the glass tubes go very well , looks like they are working for an oil industry .
