  • Is her guitar tuned a whole step down for this version?

  • God this came out when I was 16 can you freaggin imagine..and I still listen to this album

  • This is how I feel. Because I want a boyfriend and I want love. But everyone uses me for one night stands. I discovered this song right after I had my firt one night stand and it made e happy... Only I'm not 12... I'm 14

  • @ErikkChattman, I don't think she was actually 12 when she was having sex, or 17. I heard her say she didn't have sex until she was in college, at age 19. I think this song has meaning on other levels, not just sex. Look deeper young man. I'm thinking she was noticing patterns from when she was a child repeating in her her life as an adult.

  • @ErikkChattman

keep your pants on and have conversations instead, if you want a relationship. sex is a blast, but intimacy involves other dimensions to be established first...

  • This song is close to being perfect.

  • absolutely amazing. where did this come from?

  • absolutely amazing

  • High school anthem liz, i love u. (ty for this upload xox)

  • she looks like a little rodent or something. shes cute.

  • @murbones that's just the lighting and video quality

  • how old was she?

  • @smileyrachie about 28

  • @LeotheOrangeCat omg really? i thought she was like....15 lol

  • What happened to this Liz Phair? I know all aritsts/musicians mature over time but I wish she hadn't lost that part of her song writing persona that made her so appealing to my generation.

  • I'm mesmerized by her mouth and eyes in most of her videos, but in this one, it's her hands. I can watch her hands in this video all day long. I love the scream from the audience at 0:08 (and again at 2:27)! So thankful for this, OverTheEdge81. I can't believe it's been 16 years...

  • Two Weeks ago my mom told me that the closest thing to Liz Phair my generation will ever get is Avril Lavigne.

The tears still haven't dried from my face.

  • @dirtyje :[[ ...mmm well tegan and sara have hints of liz phair to their music...ehhh but they too are canadian like avril lavigne. lolol

  • @dirtyje, Katie Perry isn't all that bad. She's closer to Liz than Lavigne...

actually I know little to nothing on the subject of La'what's'er name?

But Katie impressed me as a singer-sonwriter. I may be grasping at straws here,

but I have a soft spot for Perry. (Oh no, I just listened to "Wish You Were Here" and "Smile" and I'm so disturbed I might shed a tear. Avril isn't working for me in the least bit, except for maybe her looks.)

  • The best music was being made when I was 1

  • A great track off a great album I had the luck to see her at the troubador on her 08 tour playing this record heavy shit indeed

  • this was performed the year i was born. shit i was definitely born in the wrong year.

  • lo que no entiendo es porque le ace una paja a la guitarra... baja al Sol (G) de la siguiento octava (traste 10) y sube hasta el acorde abierto de Re (D) cuando podria haber sube una cuerda, y asi continuamente....

  • that beautiful girl played this fucking good song with my favourite guitar (fender mustang) the year i was born... it have to mean something

  • Letters, sodas and sour cream in the fridge

  • beautiful version! that´s my favorite song of her.

  • Even when I was 12......

  • Fucking story of my life.

  • Gahhhhhhh- so good.

  • Is this the April 1995 show at the Moore Theater in Seattle? I remember there being a purple background behind her.

  • song of the day!!!!

liz phair is a prodigy!!! one of the few female artist that can still rock it and actually play an instrument! sorry to offend anyone with the title/lyrics. if you ever get a chance to see her perform, take it!!!!

  • Thank you for posting, this is gold.

  • Great fucking video quality.

  • makes me wanna sing along.

  • brilliant

  • Self did a kick ass cover of Stratford on Guy. Just FYI.

  • i love liz

  • sometimes things seem like a great idea when you're drunk and it's 2 a.m.

  • Comment removed

  • quite liked that.

  • i miss the 90's .. T_T

  • @BillyJoe354 me too, and so do a whole bunch of other people, so i dont get it, why dont we just bring back the 90s? lol

  • @BillyJoe354 It's funny because 90s music is still in heavy rotation on a lot of modern rock stations today.

  • @rickman33 yeah, just no good 90's music.

  • I love you, Liz.

  • Good songwriter, but Liz just can't sing.

  • Yeah she can

  • @eminemdisstopia I just think her voice is pretty weak. Everybody is entitled to his/her own opinions.

  • That's true but why bother commenting on a Liz Phair video if you don't like her voice? Besides, its not all about her voice. You're sort of missing the point. it's like those people who are endlessly complaining about the limited vocal abilities of Dylan, or Lou Reed, or Jonathan Richman, or Steve Malkmus etc etc. If you only want to hear people with pretty voices then go watch Mariah Carey or Frank Sinatra videos and stay away from the rock artists with limited voices but amazing lyrics

  • @eminemdisstopia Why bother? Well, why not? I find Liz Phair's voice to be thin & annoying. You happen to think it's great. So what. I'm not debating that you should not like her voice.

I disagree w/ you about Bob Dylan. This cat CAN sing. Listen to his early material. You are the one missing the point.

  • Dude, hate to burst your bubble, but Bob Dylan's VOICE sounds like pure shit.

    Pure. Shit.

  • @madeyes4u I'll take pure shit over Liz Phair's voice any day of the week.

  • Yeah, and you have for years.

  • @madeyes4u Gosh golly, you told me!lol

  • Glad we can agree on something, douche.

  • @madeyes4u The word "sarcasm"...Look it up, fuckwit.

  • Sarcasm? Fuckwit?

hmm large vocabulary ya got there.

  • @madeyes4u His voice was pretty unique back in the day, now he sounds like Popeye with a stroke.

  • I never said Dylan couldn't sing! I said that complaining about Phair's voice is similar to compaining about Dylan's. Man, I tell you one thing I know for sure. Youtube comment arguments are a futile waste of time

  • Ditto the futility. Hey, we agree on that much.

  • lol @ women fighting

  • @thewackoman I'm a dude...but it's still stupid.

  • that is a fender musicmaster. note the 1 pickup. mustangs have 2. just sayin.

  • Mustang guitar, pink pants, Fender tweed amp, killer lyrics. Liz, you rock.

  • Comment removed

  • shes so darling

  • she wrote this in 91 recorded it in 92 and it was released in 93.

Bush did their thing in 95

    go figure

  • holy shit that is the same chord progression!!! they should sue each other

  • liz phair wrote fuck and run probably years before bush's glycerine. we first heard it on girly sound. plus, her lyrics beat bush's glycerine big time. try again!

  • are you fucking kidding me? hush your mouth child.

  • one of the better three-chord chicks that time

  • Oh Liz , I wouldn't run, I'd stay there and fuck you all day long and all night too. Of course, this dirty old man would have to bring a full bottle of Viagra and maybe a portable heart defilabrator just in case. I hope you could figure out how to work it, I think they come with instructions.

  • hell yes!

  • how old was she?

  • like 27 or 28

  • wow, she totally explained how i felt back then, just backwards, considering im a guy and all....

  • word.

  • Comment removed

  • no, like that this song kinda of explains my early years and the way i felt about dating and girls, except shes singing about guys and if it were me, i'd be singing about girls.

  • What's so funny is that she's this tiny little thing. Like 5 feet nothing and 100 pounds. What power from her. That's what I like about her...

  • @sneakerthekid I know exactly what you mean.

  • What happens in this song just happened to me. I'm so pissed. Even though I've been listening to her for years, ha. I should've remembered the wisdom of my grunge rock elders.

  • lol great comment

  • Hahah... well played.

  • me too...great comment! 5 thumbs up

  • i love her

  • Damn she must be VERY VERY short. That type of Fender guitar is very small and it looks huge on her!!!!

  • She says she's 5'2" in one song [6'1"]. But that seems generous.

"cobainer"? Do we have all the same "favorites"?

  • I love her I wish I was wise in the nineties. Liz Phair, The Lemonheads all slipped under the radar damn!

  • boy.... sounds a lot like RUSH'S SPIRIT OF RADIO? (the beginning) i was waiting for....begin the day with a friendly voice a companion.........

  • It is in the same key. It would be fun to hear a mashup of the 2 songs.

  • Bush's Glycerine was released 18 months after this.

  • All right then, I stand corrected.

  • You have no music tastes, do you? Even talking about Bush on a Liz Phair video is a horrid mistake.

  • Sounds a lot like it. But Bush's song came after this. Just a similarity, or they liked Liz's song, and decided to use similar chords.

  • she was so cute back then.

  • Her guitar is so much bigger than her lol! I can't wait to get her new album. I'm so happy she left the Matrix in the dust!! Yay Liz!

  • She is really tiny and unassuming I used to see her in Soul Kitchen in Wicker Park....stood right next to her waiting for takeout once...and kind of turned slowly and said....Oh. She is not a real looker in person but damn I like her music.

  • great song. great tour. she was so cute back then.

  • GO LIZZ!!!!!!!

  • I love Liz Phair. I have her first 3 albums, but I didn't get her other 2. I don't know if I'd like them. I mean, I'm a HUGE pop fan, but still. Reception is mixed if not negative on her latest albums.

Can't wait 'til her new one comes out.

  • I want a boyfriend...but end up singing this almost immediately

  • I LOVE her.. I'm seeing her tomorrow :-)

  • Tell her(Liz)That I said hi......

  • sigh...

  • My favourite song from Exile.

  • anything is possible with youtube. fuck ya!

  • This song is just 100% right for me. Thanks. :)

  • i loved everything to whitespace, after that i thought maybe i was just not getting it. now i think i just dont get it.

  • I saw some merit to "Somebody's Miracle," and even her self-titled is not too terribly sucky, if you try not to think of songs like this ^, lol.

  • Give it up for Liz before she lost her talent. Most people do, no offense to her.

  • go fuck yourself.

    liz is still super talented.

you wanna know what a loss of talent looks like?

    look at nelly furtado!

    first album was wonderful.

latest album is full of club tunes.

at least liz's music is still hers.

  • Totally agree bout Nelly. But really, Phairs new stuff is nothing compared to Exile

  • Wow... this recording is such an absolute treat. Thanks so much.

    <3

  • liz rocks the world..

  • Fuck and Run, Fuck and Run, even when i was 12.

Guyville in my personal top 50, thanks Liz.

  • What ever happened to a Boyfriend? The kind of guy that tries to win you over,

And what ever happened to a Boyfriend?

The kind of guy who makes Love because he's in it,

    And, I want a Boyfriend, I want a Boyfriend,

I want all that stupid old shit like letters and sodas,

    Letters and sodas!

  • Exile and Whip Smart are her best albums, pretty much everything else is processed and regurgitated pop shit.

  • whitechocolatespaceegg is good too

  • I hate the term "sell out" but I believe in sincerity, and I think that her new stuff is some of the most insincere crappy music I've heard in a really long time. But guyville was really something special!

  • you almost felt bad..

  • 'guyville' is my most favorite album of all time. next to 'live through this'

  • LOVE THIS SONG!

  • what the fuck happened to music?!?!!?

we were awesome in late 1990's then corporate, mtv happened and we have this gigantic corporate soulless shit happening.

  • theres already an MTV since 80's and corporate shit.

  • Trying too hard to be the feamle version of the Replacements "Answering Machine". She is ok (before the GAP ads) but never anywhere close to Westerberg.

  • Oh. My. God. This video gives me the chills. :D This has got to be one of the most amazing examples of a woman at her strongest, fiercest and most creative.

  • an amazing performance

  • this is liz at her best!

  • excellent live performance, that is how a musician should perform

  • years ago, i travelled all the way to california to hear her... and to look up her dress... Isnt she beautiful?

  • Glad to see you got your priorities straight!

    LOL!!!

  • I don't know why but for some reason I feel bad for her as I watch this video. She seems like a tragic figure here.

  • I know. I just wanna hug her.

  • I agree...if by "hug" you mean "fuck".

  • That's the greatest comment ever.

  • obra maestra de los 90!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was at this show?? Never thought she would be what she is???

  • she's the best! ^_^

  • i like her guitar style + she is quite fetching, no?

  • Some of you people are such assholes. Just love to knock people down, dont ya! Go out and make your own album. Album after perfect album for us, and then we wont have suffer anymore.

  • I really miss when she was much better. She's pretty OK now, but the past was hell a lot better.

  • How is she a sell out? Her music nowadays might be more accessible and pop than it was back then, but it's still GOOD.

Liz Phair has made consistently honest music. I absolutely love her. "Exile in Guyville" is fantastic, but "Somebody's Miracle" is also beautiful. I adore "Fuck and Run", but "Why Can't I?" is a pretty damn good song as well.

Short of the long, Liz Phair ROCKS!

  • ANYONE WHO WANTS 2 EAT SHIT (and really do it) IS RLY SCREWED!!! i love liz phair's older stuff better too... but u gotta at least appreciate that shes trying rite?

  • holy shit.

    I love young Liz Phair.

before she stoped making music worth hearing.

  • H.W.C.

  • Wow you guys are a little fiesty huh?

Liz used to be about women empowerment, where She would use the guys for her own gratification. Thats the idea of the whole record!! Come on.

Don't get mad at me because she hasn't made a decent record since then.

  • Indeed! Get with it you twits!

  • Hey Beavis, i'd be her Boyfriend-uh huh huh huh, huh huh. I've wanted Liz Phair since I was 16. I'd eat the corn out of her shit.

  • There are so many layers of courage there.

  • if she never does anything again...this alone...is more than enough. This is a good song.

  • EddieChicago, you better fuckin check yourself before someone cross checks your whole state-of-being, you sorry piece of shit.

  • <3<3<3!!!

  • hehe I'm guessing you're the guy who we see in the movies, who lives in an apartment above a sewer, fucks prostitutes, gets them pregnant becasue he cant afford condoms then ditches them and fucks another one? OOORRRRRR you think its cool to post these comments, as having this kinda i dont give a shit about women attitude is going to give you the respect you clearly lack in life? Perhaps you should stop and reflect, stop and reflect.... Or maybe you're just a cock, w/e.

  • eddiechicago...or maybe she was the girl who--if you were cute and smart and fun enough--would do shots with you, have some laughs, and fuck you if she felt like it. And if you were good in bed, when you'd inevitably call her again sometime down the road, she'd give you another whirl, if she felt like it.

  • whatever happened to a boyfriend?

  • AMAZING. I can say I've been a fan from moment one - when ... Lewis Largent? hosted 120 Minutes and proclaimed "...Guyville" to be the best album of that year. Nearly..!

  • Hey cool! Another Liz! I'm Liz Abbott & I have a couple short clips of my songs on Youtube... Stop by & chk it out! Just type in "Liz Abbott" w/ ONE "z" , unlike my screen name here. See how we do things in Buffalo! It was a fun nite: my CD Release show, w/ the talented David Celia from Toronto backing me up. He's a phenomenal performer in his own right! ( He's here on y'tube, too!)

  • who cares????

  • Liz is cool!!!
