The graphics look very good for an Atari 2600 launch title (now *that* system is a good showcase for how launch titles rarely make full-use of the capabilities of a console).
I had that game when I was a kid and loved it. I think that it was the 3rd game cartridge that come out for the 2600. The first two were Combat and Pong.
@nevet1212 In general, HD stands for High Definition, although it is not the case for Classic Game Room. The HD in "Classic Game Room HD" is only there to differentiate it from the first "Classic Game Room" from back in 1999.
I would've loved this game when I was 8 years old -- back in '77. This is a launch title for the 2600 btw. I didn't get my first 2600 until '81 on the 12th b-day and picked this game up a few years later on clearance. It wasn't one of my favorites. I actually still have a 2600 (not my original one) and this game is in my collection.
Never heard of it before.Pretty old game.Looks more like someone throws space insects and pepper at you rather than shooting through space. But i guess that was space shooting in 1977.
i played the hell out of this back in 78-79, i had the gatefold boxed copy. the manual was more interesting than the game!! still, it was pretty advanced for that time.
I wouldn't call Colony Wars an FPS. It had a first person perspective option, and it was the preference, but I still think it would just be called a space shooter. Either way, Sony need to make more Colony Wars immediately.
@Xegethra MazeWar was 1985. Starship was 1977. So it would be the first game to use a first person perspective (as opposed to third person like Pacman). Starship was the first FPS.
@harleykman maze war was mid 70s, there has been more than one version. the first version was creeated in 1972/73...look it up on google. the one in 85 was a more popular later version, not the first
@Bittergamer1886 Yes really. Starship, Star Raiders, Elite, and similar games were advertised as "first person" games. You can't just go back and rewrite history
@harleykman I meant that Starship isn't the first FPS. The first was MazeWar, which was developed in 1973 for the lmlac PSD-1. Look it up on Wikipedia.
I'm a big fan of "LOST". Since some of the characters show up in 1977 with Dharma, it would be great to see Hurley playing an original Atari 2600 sixer on the show with this game. :D
i don't remember which atari it is for, but you should review the Texas Chainsaw Massacre one, where you play as Leatherface and have to chop people up haha crazy game.
star raiders was great. i love these reviews but i respectfully disagree with him on this one: i also had starship back in the day and i hated it. you can tell from the screenshots he shows: it seems random whether you get hit or not, you can't tell what's what, and there's no overall gameplay. i distinctly remember playing it for like 5 minutes and then putting it away and hardly ever getting it out again. star raiders i loved.
but now because it's from 77 it's cool. which is true too, yaknow?
As a child, I remember getting this game back in '78. There were few games at that point & my father and I would wait for the release of each new game (Atari and Telestar/Sears were the only developers then) Checking stores every week. We bought every single game 1 by 1. Unfortunately by late '79- early '80 it was unfeasible since Atari let 3rd parties develop Atari 2600 games. (which contributed to Atari's downfall & the video game crash of 84) By then there were too many games to buy'em all.
I love these reviews, I only recently discovered them and had a blast watching the back catalog. I know you do ALOT of 2600/7800 games, but I always want more! Less GTA4, more Atari please :)
hmm this game doesn't look too appealing to me, just straight forward head on...But I do love the old Atari 2600 reviews. It made me want to get a Atari 7800 (still waiting on it to arrive here via eBay) as well as the PS3 vs. 7800 video. So I could bust out my old games I own and buy some I never did own, but loved.
I have this game but for some reason, will not work. It will boot up and show up, but will not move when i move the controller. It will not even fire.
The graphics look very good for an Atari 2600 launch title (now *that* system is a good showcase for how launch titles rarely make full-use of the capabilities of a console).

I love the blocky graphics on the very early 2600 games. The graphics seem almost surreal today, in a good way.

What, no cheesy remarks or music from Starship the band? I'm a bit dissapointed with Mark on this one..XP

Was this the very first FPS?
Probably yes. From this evolved other FPSes like Star Raiders, Elite, Wing Commander, Colony Wars, and so on. 1977 was the dawn of all that.

Starship wasn't released in Europe. I had to import it a few years back.
We got Star Raiders instead which came with its own controller in 1982. Basically Star Raiders is an update and improvement of Starship.
