  • ....I've got a 12" single of this.....one side he sings "Margret Thacher"...the other side he sings "Ronald Reagan".....wudda trip.....

  • epic

  • get some !!

  • Sounds like Dangerous Type by The Cars in the beginning

  • i'm best friends with george :]

  • Just the way rock and roll should be: nihilist philosophy that you can dance to.

  • I've had this song in my head all week. Freakin' love it.

  • We weren't allowed to play this for our school's talent show.

Yeah, we would have ruined it anyway,

  • That's too bad...that would have been great.

  • Love these guys!!!

  • and I felt torture, I felt pain, just like that film with Michael Caine!

  • I was wondering--which Michael Caine film is he referring to?

  • Which Cain film GET CARTER of course. One of the best ever live bands I followed them everywhere. I never missed a Valentines day until I left old blightly shores. Keep the faith boys!!

  • After all the 80`s was really rock and roll.

  • This was the song Kids in the Halls, Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald played to get pumped for their Pilot show of the Kids in the Hall. The year 1988 or 1989.

  • Reading festival 87,brilliant!

  • love this song

  • I remember being blown away by this when I first heard it back then. Still sounds fresh today.

  • The Clash of the '90s

  • they are more from '80s... don't you know? well they are a really good band, I saw them this last summer.

  • Top band. Great song. Live genius.

  • I love bands that wear suits!

  • I like this song

  • great tune

  • "film with M Cain" I know what movie hes talking about, you?

  • Ipcress, Chris.

  • Best song on this album is "When am I coming Down" - trippin hard in 87!!!

  • all time classic

  • Saw them in the late 80', but never forgot them. Greetings at all.

  • and no one dares to step where there is no path and everyone gets wasted by the system. pity...

  • spoken like a true prodigy of reason.

  • wow always loved this song completly original good stuff

  • Fuckin awesome band. They spoiled a gig once by playing Anarchy In The UK as an encore but I forgive them. Mr Dollimore was & is a superb guitarist. My band supported the Damned in 94 when he was a member & he was a gent, offering red wine & crackers all night!

  • the four words of life

  • Thanks for posting! I love these old songs!!!

  • One of the classic singles of the '80s, or any decade, really.

  • loved this song cranked up to earbleed level in the car still got it on 12" vinyl...try screaming blue messiahs for a similar sound

    m47

  • kickass song

  • Takes me back to the St Valentines Day Massacre Gig at the Kilburn National. Great gigs !!!!

  • are they British??

  • Yep, they are.

  • this describes wat i feel 100%

  • So sad to say----I remember when they came on tv on the night flights. Hee Hee

  • that's not sad to say! I recorded those shows!

  • too cool.

  • Down the bridge....yummmmmm...

  • anthem

  • chris dollimore is a guitar god!!!

  • they gave an excellent concert yesterday in zagreb, during a thunderstorm... what a true fucking song, i thought

  • the best fucking song

  • kind of scary.....your born(birth)you go to school, you go to WORK,then you DIE!! sounds like life for the most of us."true punk" i love every song from this LP!!!!

  • British gangster cool at it's best, the Coynes, like the Krays, are a pair you don't mess with.....lean, mean rock'n'roll....

  • i heared that the two guitar players, bass player and singer were a pretty tough group when it came to collecting.

  • The Lead singer reminds my of the one of the leading actor who played one of the Kray Bother. in the 1990 Movie entitle The Krays. They must of been inspired by the Krays, to come up with such an agressive persona and sound.

  • filmnoir the Kray movie was great. "Do you know the Beatles?" "No,but the Beatles know us". Says it all.

  • This album was my first punk/alternative album (It rescued me from hair metal!) and it remains one of my favorites.

  • thank god for that

  • LOL at 3:13

  • They influenced many many performers after them, but sex pistols influnced them.Truly awsome band!Havent you noticed that you know most of their songs but you didnt know their names, there you go.

  • These guys are Brits? Sure about that?

Remember,Hendrix and The Pretenders also had their first big splash in the UK.

The song title rules. The artists went on to what after The Godfathers?

    The toon fookin' rawks!

A couple of months ago,in a dangerous period,I listened to it every morning to flush out my headgear before heading out the door.

  • yes they're brits or rather irish-scot, english. etc

  • !!! - just fucking great

  • that sound on this song is outstanding...clever title as well.

  • Great! I saw them live in the early 90ies. There were also "the lord of the new church" and "die brüder" ("the brothers" for those, who speak english only) on the festival. Godfathers: Great british rock `n roll-punk-style!

  • Not even The Strokes or The Hives can rock like this. Btw, they suck.

  • ASSHOLE!

The Strokes are sweet, where the hell did they come in on this?

    I love this song, though.

  • This song says it all!

  • I am now in the work phase - not too much to look forward to...

  • Death!! But if you play your cards right you might milk the longest phase(work, "trust no one") for some tasty juice, untill "Pitch Black"(Great movie).

  • Birth School Work Death = best song title ever ?

  • lets see, your born then its the hell of school and the work...and then you pray for DEATH!!!! LOL!!! I DO LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!

  • I saw these guys in Atlanta when they hit the road to promote their first album. I was amazed at how well the guitarists traded licks. Didn't the lead singer used to write for a major trade magazine like Rolling Stone before putting this band together? I'd be interested in how the renunion concert went. .if anyone has seen them, please comment. I love this song. I still play that first album, now in CD form, religiously. It's that good.

  • The film with Michael Cain is 'The Ipcress File'.

  • I actually forgot about that film. For years, whenever I heard this song, I thought they were referring to 'Get Carter.'

  • ONE OF MY FAV FLIX!!!!

  • The devil makes work for idle hands...

  • No Doubt about it. This song rocks!! from 80's era. Does anyone know the movie with Micheal Cain that lead singer refers to in song?

  • I always assumed it was "Alfie", as in "what's it all about, Alfie", but it's entirely possible that he just said Michael Caine because it rhymed and didn't have any particular film in mind.

  • qotsa, aren't fit to lick The Godfathers boots!!!

    What!?!

    Your insane man.

This is a cool song yes, but your statement is not close to being true.

  • They tour again. London 14 February 2008 The Forum North London.....

  • Great song! I never fogot this tune! Thanxs for posting it!

  • they were chuckin brill live - one of the Internationals in Manchester, late 80s. Never made it really big, but too many corporate arseoles do and not enough of the good guys.

  • Fuck yeah.......

  • ringo, you lucky thing! I only saw these lads that nite in Wardour Street and that was also the last time that I went to the Marquee before it moved to Charing X and the original site was tragically and shamefuly demolished. I agree great band, great memories. Peace.

  • the kind of music everybody loves.

    extreme guitar riffs and solos.

  • yeah but no wanky metal solos.

  • The Godfathers are reuniting their original line-up to promote the reissue of an expanded 21st anniversary edition of their debut album Hit By Hit which will be out on January 10th.

  • Alexmokey, try out Queens of the stone age.

They are no godfathers but, nice simple rock and roll, except for the occasional broken robot songs.

  • Hey mate, thanx 4 your suggestion! Yeah, u right, not as classy as the Godfathers but Queens of the stone age provide a healthy portion of straightforward RnR. Peace. Cheerz

  • qotsa, aren't fit to lick The Godfathers boots!!!

  • godfathers yeaaaaaaaah

  • The Godfathers were great!

  • I frist became aware of 'The Godfathers' when I saw this very same video back in 1987 and I always thought that they should be more widely known but the same year -1987- GnR came on the scene like gangbusters. Now, that I am older and more mature, I can appreciate the existential angst in this song. When I was a teenage back in the 80s I just couldn't connect but now I sense and completely understand the lyrics. I'm audi, peace!

  • and I still remember the exacte quote I read on "Time Out" magazine when I decided to set out for the Marquee that long gone nite in Dec. '86: "Godfathers - No fuss Rock 'n Roll" And that's what it was all about!! I really miss bands like this.

  • blinding guitar riff...the term "kick-ass rock n roll" was surely invented for them?!!

  • I saw these guys live back in December '86 at the Marquee in Wardour St. I'll never forget this gig and I'll never forget the unique sweaty atmosphere of the Club and the earache for the twangy Tele strummin'!! A great band in the very best venue ever existed.

  • alex, that gig at the Marquee '86 was my introduction to the Godfathers and i went on to see them a good few times afterwards, a couple of times at the Venue in New Cross, great band, great memories.

  • thumds up for the godfathers since 1987 good ass song i love it good band

  • This song sums up life as we know it.

  • Another telecaster holding down the chords for the leads. Great song.

  • yeah baby...that's the shit

  • modern music

  • shit, waar is mijn luchtgitaar!

  • There was talk of a reformation last year - but nothing happened. Would love to know if it could be still on. Brilliant band.

  • The Godfathers Rock n' Rule !!!!

  • cool band, and the drummers mullett is outstanding !

  • And how! Both on great band and takes me back. Them and The Replacements, got me through college in the hair band days.

  • great band

  • Man, this one really takes me bank. Thanks for digging this one out.
