  • I think they might be devil rays, and they probably do this to scare their prey away from the edge of the shoal of rays and towards the centre but no one really knows

  • i think that whether they were flying animals before and still have that instinct but the most obvious explanation would be them feeling attacked and do that as self defense or simply curiosity to know what is beyond the sea? who knows it was like that frogs came out of the water!

  • they are not happy, they jump because of your presence, this rays jumps when a predator is around :)

  • The two manta rays that couldn't jump disliked this video

  • wow thats great. why didn't I see that when I was in cabo

  • Scientists don't know why these rays breach like this, though there's lots of speculation. Whatever the reason, it's cute as hell.

  • FOOP

    FOOP

    FOOP

    FOOP

    FOOP

  • it is not a manta, it is mobula ray... mobula ray can jump n they call it FLYING DEVIL FISH...

  • ok so another seacreature evolving .... so they can kill us -.-

  • beautiful video, thanks for sharing

  • Evolution in progress.

  • I was more interested in those rocks on the beach, IT WAS HUGE!

  • aww thats so ADORABLE how the manta rays try to flap their arms and fly!

  • fuck i expected them to glide like dolphins not slash like sharks

  • There are several theories as to why rays jump out of the water. The most scientific is that they are trying to rid their body of parasites, but rays have the intelligence of a dog, maybe they just think it's fun.

  • manta 'ray-ve'

  • Arnt they eagle rays? Manta rays are thehuge ones. Eagle rays are the one that leap out of water.

  • @alvingb giant mantas leap out also

  • @alvingb yeah these look like eagle rays.. but mantas do jump

  • she jump like dolphin?? for happyness??? sorry for my english!!!

  • they are devil rays

  • @MrSnowboardnzx Manta rays have lots of names, 'Devil Rays' being one of them.

  • fly like the wins !!

  • they jump out of the water to slap the parasites off of their backs.

  • I believe I can fly !!!!! OH SHIT

  • Wild mantine appears!

  • Scientists speculate on different theories but nobody really knows why they do this. Great white sharks can be seen breaching sometimes to catch seals but since rays have no teeth, I doubt the reason would be the same.

Anyways, great video & photo too. =)

  • @jess92981 they jump out of the water to slap the parasites off of their backs

  • FLY! FLY YOU FOOLS!

  • Look what I can do!

  • They look so awkward jumping out of the water lol

  • They're not manta or stingrays, they're MOBULA rays

  • I want to be one when I grow up. :D

  • there mobulas :D

  • they dont look like mantas, too small, they look just like normal rays

  • they dont look like mantas, too small, they look just like normal rays

  • I wonder why they are doing this. Are they trying to get away from something or just having fun?

They could just do it for fun, there is lots of animal behaviour in nature that seems to just be for fun. But I do wonder.

  • mantene used splash!

    nothing happened!

  • EVOLUTION IN PROGRESS AMEGAD

  • Couldn'y they jump into your boat? If so, then couldn't they sting you? I dunno... Just thinking that may be dangerous.

  • @allylav They aren't poisonous, but they are able to jump on you and kill you.

  • like clay pigeon shooting........ only better!!

  • looks like fucking pancakes jumping

  • You know they were all arguing after they landed. "Dude, I got like... 10 times more air than you did" "No way man, I totally jumped higher!"

  • good now drive your boat into it

  • harry porter jumping...haa

  • Read this book: Natural Selection by Dave Freedman....about flying Manta Rays

  • Read this book: Natural Selection by Dave Freedman....about flying Manta Rays.

  • @Denacute

reading it now. at the part where theyre tracking them at the inlet.

    good read.

  • If they keep jumping like this for 10 000 years, they might start learning how to fly!

  • SPLAT, SPLAT, SPLAT, SPLAT, SPLAT, SPLAT, SPLAT, SPLAT, ETC

  • *jumps out* *flails around randomly*

  • i heard that when fish start to jump that means there is a shark near by...idk if thats the same for manta rays..

  • @lavigne1395

manta rays breach the water for similar reasons that whales do it. to shake off parasites and barnacles and the such.

  • I am pretty sure they do that to feed and scoop up small prey in the water.

  • You'll be happy to know they are still putting on this fantastic show.We were just there(July 2010) on a sunset cruise....same spot...loud music from the boat...when hundreds of them started to leap out of the water, each it seemed trying to outdo the other.Amazing sight!

  • i just got back yesterday and there called bat rays we saw them to on the glass bottom boat

  • *I believe i can fly*

  • btw there is a documented kill by one of these things, a light 1 but still the woman died of blunt force the thing weighed under 100 pounds.. imagine a full weight 1 hitting you off the boat hehe.

  • Wheeeeee!!! x3

  • They are calling for Steve Irwin's Corpse.

  • okay i love manta rays and i love beautiful sea creatures but this? not quite majestic. all i see is DERP DERP DERP :D

  • Location looks like the last scene from Planet Of The Apes.

  • cracked.

  • I now know why the caged mobula ray sings

  • As cracked pointed out, Those are Mobula Rays.

  • What's the evolutionary advantage of this feature?

  • Cracked!

  • one of these killed steve irwin

  • @bustaphatty I'm trying to think of a nice way I could say this. How about this: NO THEY DID NOT! Completely different family. What happened to Steve Irwin was an accident and besides, these are Manta (or Eagle) rays. Not stingrays. They do not have barbs. Big difference.

  • @mantaraylover5 same thing, there still evil.

  • @bustaphatty of course they are. Because every f***ing thing in nature is cruel to humans. I see.

  • I keep expecting one to lunge at the camera.

  • They're so majestic and beautiful.

  • ive been to cabo san lucas a year or 2 ago its reallly beautiful there i wannu like in the huge hotels on the coast :P

  • I DIDNT know they could get so airborn! thate amsazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW! they do a belly flop each time! i hope it doesnt hurt xD

  • Cool

  • XD OMG that is SO CUTE! It reminds me of those little fish enemies form mario how they just keep flapping their wings in the air lol XD

  • They make good eating ;)

  • Those are cownose rays, not mantas.

  • It must be too hot to swim in the water....

  • that looks so prehistoric that scenery

  • They are SO cute! I love ocean life!

  • this place was so fun when i went

  • what are they doing for what is jumping of manta

  • lol one day they will fly but not today looks like they still need more training ;)

  • hi, this is a normal behavior when mantas are mating, the female breach once and several males will follow to let her know they are ready too, it is also known that tehy have to remove some barnicles and parasites and by doing this they can get rid of them. thanx, razz lopez ocean riders los cabos.

  • ORRR they r baby bird fell off their tree LOL amazing video

  • The sounds under the water:

    Damn it, didnt work

    Damn it, didnt work

    Damn it, didnt work

    Damn it, didnt work

    Damn it, didnt work

    Damn it, didnt work

  • hahaha i get it

  • @DV00B LOL. Made me laugh pretty hard

  • that cool

  • Great video.

  • eventually one would figure out how to fly... just keep that up for a couple weeks

  • FunFunFunFunFun! :P

    Maybe they are just foolin'round?

    I like that bird-theory! _Vii

  • Now, THAT.....IS....AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

  • maybe there trying to fly :-)

  • guys be pacient only 1 million years of evolucion and theyll be birds

  • fuck that theory

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was thinking the same

  • cool

  • If LaMarck was correct then eventually these would become birds.

  • manta ray are awesome

  • lol. i agree.

  • supposedly they do it to attract female-ray attention so they can mate

  • Well it is pretty sexy =]

  • they often jump out of the water when being hunted

  • FLY! FLY MY LITTLE PRETTIES!

  • @NJMIgnatio

I lol'd so hard when I read that dude.

  • @NJMIgnatio LOL

  • Its like their pokemon

  • haha ish like omg wheeeeeee

  • I wonder if they jump because they're happy :] that'd be so cute.

  • they are having a competition to see who can get the highest

  • i wouldnt doubt that way into the future these things will evolve and be able to fly

  • ばんざい

  • rays tend to leap out of the water to escape underwater predators usually. That might've been why these did as well.

  • maybe, but no one is really sure why they jump out of the water

  • cause its fun xD

  • True. Who really knows. Maybe they DO get bored. ;)

  • pero que cosas tan lindas y locas que chido video

  • ther having a orgy

  • i can explain it! they are called bat rays (you can tell be the wings)and they jump out of the water like that because they are either trying to cetch food or they are just doing what bat rays do..... jump out of the water ok so ya i explained it

  • Maybe they don't like water:D?

  • They want freedom, they want to fly on land XD!

  • my guess is one of two things, one has been posted that they may be eating the next one is they may be getting chased i know hammerheads like to eat rays so this is another thing that may be happening i wont say it is though o.O

  • they get some height despite belly flops and getting winded ;-}

  • These guys are def. leissure devil rays, the small relatives of the gib manta rays

  • Haha cool! There should be some 'wheeee!' sound effects XD

I've never seen manta rays in person before, just whales and dolphins (although that's really awesome too). Thanks for sharing your video with us :)

  • GREAT now we have manta rays learning to suicide bomb ¬.¬

  • Guys! Guys! I'm doing it! I'm flying! I'm fly ... AW CRAP!

  • the joke about the stingray family is sick and wrong. and anyone with a brain knows you spelled irwin wrong, you fag

  • if ur talking about pgadeyne's post, then the erwinadfatilus is actually correct and its ironically named for the venomous spines along its tail.

  • Sting Rays and Eagle Raus are very different, come from different families

    · Family Erwinadfatilus (stingrays).

    · Family Myliobatidae (eagle rays).

I dived with Sting Rays, Eagle Rays and Mantas, these are definitely not Sting Rays (the shape is rounder), way too small to be Mantas, in addition the pectorals (wings) of the Mantas are much narrower. You can also see the spotted ack on the ones jumping closer to the camera, which is more typical of an Eagle (Mantas have uniform dark backs)

  • actually its funny jodevries, they feed on tiny crustaceans and shrimp, unless were talkin about the small mantas... lol

  • i saw the exact same thing at the exact same place. it was so cool, i was too slow for the video though, thanks!

  • Neither Mantas nor Sting, tehse are Eagle rays

  • Eagle Rays are Stingrays, but these are Mantas. Look at the white stripes on either side of the neck and the spoon like appendages on the mouth

  • We just saw something like this in the Galapagos and the guide explained that they were trying to dislodge clinging fish like remoras. Makes more sense than feeding as they are bottom feeders.

  • They have no reason to dislodge Ramoras. Remoras eat their parasites.

  • A mexican informed that they are feeding when they are all jumping.

  • Oh yeah... another mexican ( a former president) told us that we have to prepare for economic abundance & progress. and guess what ? :-(
