A russian expedition is on way to summit k2 in winter 2011...this will be the first time summit..but it wont be easy for the guys to summit. My closest friends are serving this expedition. Best wishes guys

@yusafzai08 Not to be nitpicky or anything but, Everest has the most deaths(because of the overwhelming amount of attempts compared to K2 and AP1). Annapurna I is the deadliest percentage wise (for every 10 that acsend, 4 die, Yikes!) But among climbers I think there is a consensus that K2 is the most dangerous. God Bless.
@Jazz7787 It has no name because it is so remote that it had no local name and K stands for Karakorum (the range it lies in) and the peaks which were visible were named k1 k2 k3 etc etc. The other Ks were found to have local names, ie Gasherbrum, and were re-named. K2 however did not appear to have a local name and remained as K2. It was later found to have a local name (Chogori) - Means roughly "Big Mountain", but K2 stuck.
No that is not it's official name. The British commission passed it as that name in honour of the geologist, but that name was never officially approved by the crown (even though it became quite popular lateron).
They tried to name it mt. austin godwin but that name wasn't approved at that time for whatever reasons. Later the mountain climbers among which it was so popular felt that it did not deserve a name because giving a name would be synonymous to warmth and human, while the mountain was neither of the two.
k-2 is high as 46 triangle shape,and Everest is on 24 triangle ..also some way on k-2 for climbing is so hard,,and most climber have died ,,cause of snow sliding..Everest is nothing then k-2..yes nanga perbat is more dangerous then k-2,,so people called it killer mountain
@Helmut83 They both share the same characteristics of huge shifting ice ceracs. This is a large part of both there high death ratios. It was one of these large ceracs at the top of the bottle neck which collapsed and killed the 11 climbers on K2. Annapurna is still certainly the more deadly, with less attempts an around 45 percent fatalitys
Firstly the base camp to summit height of everest is lesser. Secondly, just because a mountain is taller doesnt mean it is harder to climb, it depends more on the harshness of weather on the mountain, steepness of the paths, availability of places to make up temporary camps while on the hike, the actual terrain of the mountain.
In all these respects K2 is harder to climb than everest. Plus it is the only 8000m+ mountain which has not been successfully climbed during winters.
@afroze100 As far as im aware, Nanga Parbat has never been climbed during winter either. But I agree that K2 is a much harder climb than Everest. Although I must admit, I would love to climb both, regardless of technical ability.
@afroze100 Its something I hope to attempt one day (climbing K2 in winter alpine style), although im not sure I fully understand just yet what im letting myself in for.

I as a humble climber (less t 4.000m) feel amazed towards the distant image of such beauty. K2 is so deadly as beautifull... As once a italian climber, its name echoes adventure, mistery, life and death. Fosco Maraini, said K2 is:"...just the bare bones of a name, all rock and ice and storm and abyss. It makes no attempt to sound human. It is atoms and stars. It has the nakedness of the world before the first man - or of the cindered planet after the last."

I hear everest is much easier to climb than K2. More people have died climbing K2 than any other mountain on earth.
