Great book! It's an eye opening look into the Mexican culture in the Sierra Madre. Richard has some "cojones" and some loose screws to travel through there alone.
Fascinating. I want to go see this beautiful part of our planet. I have no doubt as to the accuracy of his description of the Narcotrafficantes.
However, I think he went looking for a conclusion. And a book deal. So be it it is good reading. His description of the book's hook, the scene where he is hunted like a dog, seems too close to the scene in the Cohen brothers' movie "No Place for Old Men" and I wonder if it happened at all. If it did happen, what the fuck did he expect?
To the idiots who have posted comments about sealing the borders, I'd suggest opening your minds. It is sad but there will always be racist Xenophobes who hate anyone unlike themselves.
@skeetersvideos: my cousin was murdered by an Illegal: you are a pathetic naive moron. I suggest you "open your mind" to the effect of Open Borders Policies by the US and Mexican Governments.
These folks are all coming northward, bringing the same attitude with them, that a law is only a "suggestion" to be laughed at. If the federal government would do what Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution says it shall do, the southern border would be SEALED.
the book isnt all about the corruption and bad side of mexico. he meets alot of great people who helped him out, and he had alot of great times. but he did get fucked w by those two guys right at the end of his trip.
As a fellow Tucsonian, I picked the book up, at first, becase the title made me grin. I read it straight through - one of those rare books that I was unable to set down. I found myself reading whilst walking down the road, on the bus, on my lunch hour, etc.
Easy to read, fascinating and full of so much information and a few great witticisms. It does help if you understand the British sense of humour :) But I loved it. :)

If you live in the US, get used to it. The US is becoming more like Mexico every day. If we don't secure the borders, deport Mexican settlers, and crack down on Mexican nationalist insurgents and the drug cartels, we will have bloody chaos in the US.
The streets of our towns will run red with blood.
the last chapter or so of this book seemed like someone else wrote it...like an editor. also, seemed SUPER fake.
