Those are small kids paddles, so I purchased 1x6 boards which gave me 3/4 inch by 5.75 inches to start, with one side of the cedar boards planed and one rough. They are sold as home exterior wood, so the grain is fairly straight and dependable, not too many knots and you get a rough side, so you can clamp it and then remove the scars, later. Cedar is light and soft to carve, however, for a long paddle, a glued laminate of two pieces is better to avoid flexing. Thanks.
