I GOT THIS! The Apple symbolizes something forbidden, because it's from the story of humanity's fall onto earth from the Garden of Eden. Bible Reference.

Rin has an apple because she wants to be human like Eve.

The apple in LEN's hand was rotten, foreshadowing that something bad is going to happen and he fell to earth, and couldn't get back to heaven.

The apple in Miku's hand respresents that Miku has taken the apple from heaven, AKA Rin, a forbidden Angel.

I know of at least one manga where it's established that angels are genderless, but in others they very clearly have genders. And anyway, angels as we know them aren't really in the Bible at all, so there's not really an "official" stance on this. As far as I know, anyway.

I am sure people will disagree with me, and even thumbs down this comment, but I have to say it:

I hate the "I love you"-line

It destroys the whole thing for me, and that's because it's not only stating the obvious, but also you can tell form the her voice, that she is trying to make people feel bad for what happened and *trying to make people cry*, by throwing the "ilu" card, when people are already in tears. Getting sad, and being told to be sad are nowhere near the same thing.
