  • joe i watch your videos for years..man you are the best tutor in youtube...!!

  • @tonybleak9 So kind!

  • Nice job-Can you do one on arpeggio tapping

  • Your video is only named "Bass in seconds" not "bass in 60 seconds." ARE YOU TRYING TO TRICK ME?!

  • Thanks Joe, Nice way of breaking the bass down!

    Peace

    SuperBartok

  • i clicked on this because it thought u were gene simmons!!!

  • @ruler2dj8 Sorry. I'm not. I wish I had his money, though! LOL

  • @CoolBear777 Lol. dont we all,, no dis respect meant ofcourse

  • @CoolBear777 you're better than him on bass anyways...

  • @CoolBear777 What you lack monetarily, you more than make up for in musicianship.

  • @ruler2dj8 oUUO And I thought he was Marco Mendoza !!

  • @ruler2dj8 gene Simmons is nowhere near this talented

  • @ruler2dj8 How could you confuse gene simmons with a BASS PLAYER?? Nice job Joe.

  • nice that's just what i needed to motivate me forward from the "same ol stuff slump" i was in. I also liked your comment about "whatever works for you" makes me want to watch all your other tutorials. Thanks much

  • @ssteiyne Thank you! That's my philosophy. If it works for you, who am I to say what's right or wrong? I'm here to lay down my approach. I am not the end all. My hope is to inspire people to get out there and think. Take what you can from me (or anyone for that matter)and make music with it. Cheers!

  • man... I love ur vids...

  • Just for the record, this GaryNull d-bag has been poaching a bunch of bass tech videos and trying to make anything but finger plucking sound like a waste of time, my guess is because that's all he can do... either way don't take it personally Joe, dig the videos, short and sweet thanks!

  • @fendermonkey14 Thank you! I don't take many of the bad comments too seriously. We all have opinions. Makes us human that way. I do however take issue with those that argue opinion. It's like saying "I like sunny days." "Oh yeah? Well, you're dumb! I like rainy days!" Silly and incredibly futile. We're all here to learn and give back to help push this life along. Hopefully for the better. All the best!

  • You are awesome on bass :p thanks for the vids!

  • Very nice, I appreciate what you are doing for beginning bass players like myself :)

  • Thank you for explaining the very basic concept and not going into 20 million variations! By the end of those 6-10 minute videos I’m just irritated but you managed to keep me calm! Good Lesson!

  • @LightningSchecter I'm glad! The last thing I would want to do is to irritate someone by going on and on about this and that without even pausing to catch my breath. I mean, seriously, for one to just belabor the topic with some long-winded diatribe that doesn't mean a whole hill of beans is absurd! LOL I can go on...and on and on... :)

  • I went full stupid and got a 6 string. Very difficult to learn slapping at first. I might need to pick up an inexpensive 4 string to learn basic things with more room between strings! I love your videos. Directly to the point. Question, will we ever see you in HD? :)

  • @neurocosm HD? Why would you want a silly thing like that? LOL I say learn your slapping on the instrument you bought. I think it'll be easier on the four after that. You'll only have to re-learn it again. All of my basses feel different for slap. They all have their ways. Keep at it.

  • With my thumb

  • @coolbear777 hi, I've been playing bass for about ten months, and I play free style a little bit, but I find it more comfortable struming the strings with a down ward motion, while still keeping the timeing of the whole song, is this a bad habit???

  • @davidfender1986 If it fits the music...I say RIGHT ON!!! Nothing is wrong with anyone's technique as long as it gets their musical idea across! All the best to you!

  • @ coolbear777 hey how long have you been playing bass, I've been playing for nine months and I have trouble some times with my fingering what's in the books I have, doesent always work for me.......

  • @Pielmexicana89 I have been playing since dinosaurs walked the earth! LOL PM your e-mail to me and I'll send you some sheets that may help you.

  • your such a good teacher that you should devote more time into these lessons and slow down the prosses that way your videos would be way more effective

  • @Longboardersrule12 Thank you for the comment! There will be longer lessons on my personal website.

  • Good Stuff! (Y)

  • Good stuff! I like that bass, looks rustic, nice tone!

  • Bass tapping is kinda useless . . .

Show up "tapping" for an audience and they'll say "Get the fuck out!".

I have to thank all you tappers for giving me the extra work.

I "play bass", . . not "guitar bass" or "piano bass', . . hahaha.

  • @GaryNull Just another technique for the trick bag.

  • @GaryNull Thanks to you for leaving more room for creative and innovative players.

  • @GaryNull if you need a reason to tap, it's more fun then fingerstyle...

  • @GaryNull They make awesome solo's mate. Its not NEEDED no, but it sure as hell is awesome.

  • thx

  • so thats how to get tapping going on my bass...never thought of using the scale like that!

  • What was that for?

  • @CoolBear777 shut up

  • @ED8552 Again...why the hate?

  • Everyone has different tastes in basses. Just because his is different from yours doesn't mean it sucks.

  • hahahahahhha

  • @ED8552

how do you know? he explains very well. did jesus ever explain something to you? NO

  • @Mikelangelo267 oh so you think that he's some joseph smith jr?? thats great. go worship him.

  • @Mikelangelo267 YEAH!!!!

  • even jesus doesnt love that bass

  • Lots of fret buzz.......

  • When your action is as low as mine it's going to buzz a bit. I like it. It's my tone. I like the grittiness of it.

  • Hey man!

I've been playing bass since the nineties but I'm learning sooo much from you.

    Thanks for posting!!

  • @TheServant09

    me too!!! Thanks, Joe!

  • Right I have a question, when exactly is the best time to tap say in writing a bassline? Atm when im writing basslines it seems very limited especially support wise. It seems to be more for flashy things or am I wrong?

  • yeah finger tapping is used in solos mainly

  • From what I understand of it, you want to use bass tapping when, if you are playing solo, you want to play both melody and bass lines. The tapping hand usually plays the melody while the fretting hand usually plays the bass line.

  • True. Tapping is wherever and whenever you want to play it. It is a means of getting your musical point across. It can be bass/melody, bass/chords, melody/chords. There are so many great players that use this device so well.

  • Not at all. Play it when you feel it. Use whatever technique necessary to convey your feelings.

  • What is that scale? Didnt get it.... But it's helpfull, but I'd appreciate a reply

  • C maj and C minor

  • very very simple? lol, great job!

  • I was wondering if there is a way you can expand on the tapping thing, the only reason i ask is because guitar tapping and bass tapping is different and on top of that i would like to just know more for my bass vocab. um..... ive been playing for about 7-8 years and this is one of many i still dont know much about could you posably help out thanks

  • -_-

  • I love that bass! Is it Marcus Miller Jazz?

  • It's an Ibanez. It's an oldie from '75. I love it. It's one of my babies! I think Marcus' is patterned after a Fender Jazz from around the same year.

  • Thanks a lot for this.

  • i actually just started learning to tap the scales myself. its really fun and useful exercise. love your vids, keep um coming

  • Will do!

  • when you pull off going down, are you plucking?

  • In a way. With the fretting hand.

  • lol what about the "60" in the title?

  • I know, I know. The monster is unleashed! They can't be 60 seconds anymore! LOL

  • hey joe,

is your bass a 5 string? or 4?

  • seems to be a 4 string

  • Yes it is.

  • me got a request too - can you make a video about riffs? simple blues base lines, and, maybe, some well-known and legendary bass riffs or solos?

  • It's in the works. Thanks for the request. Take care.

  • oh, thanks!

  • btw iv got a request, can you make a bass video about playing bass and singing? Iv been working on it and its pretty tricky especially when it comes to rhythmically challenging bass lines then singing a melody ontop of it.

  • The simple answer...split the lobes of your brain. Les Claypool does it. We can, too! Not as well as he can, but, anyhow. Seriously, a great request. That one is going to take a couple of vids to explain. I can do that for you. Not hard to do. It just takes a bit of practice. Thanks for the request. Take care.

  • Awesome took your advice went practised it and now im singing and playing. The split your lobes thing works... but does it feel like you cant really focus or are floating between focuses when you do it? It does for me and its kindov unnerving! Maybe time will tell on that one.

  • It's like keying in on sounds. Your brain can only process a few at a time. You hear the ones you focus on. When I'm working on a bass line with a vocal, I'll isolate one and then the other. Know them like the back of your hand. One will suffer for the other depending on where you're focusing at the time. With practice you can minimize the concentration and just "feel" the parts. Thanks again for watching!

  • Long time no see. Thanks for the vid!

  • You're welcome. How are things? I've been having some trouble with my editing program. I think I've got it together. More videos on the way.

  • thANX ;)

  • You're very welcome!

  • Hey man, I bought my bass just a few days before you posted your first video. Your videos really help me to understand the instrument and get the basics down. Thanks for posting!

  • Thanks a bunch! Drop me a line and let me know how you're doin'! Take care.

  • Thanks Buddy! oh yeah if i can find a recording sound of an death from any living thing, like a deer, I belive harmonized above human hearing it would work in keeping deer away from cars, or trucks broadcasting it.

    Can you help me.

  • I think that it would attract them. I learnt that from Unlimited Hunting 2009! :D

  • You may be right!

  • If you harmonize in a major chord, they will meet you for a drink. Minor chord...I think they'll wage war! Possibly vice versa. Just a thought.

  • a diminished and your talking about deer's taking over the world.

  • Bambi becomes Rambo! THINK OF IT!!!

  • hell lets throw in some scales... super locrian deer... coming to a cinema near you :p

  • LMAO!!!

IN A WORLD!!! WHERE DEER are NEAR and CLEAR and DRINK BEER with STEER that NEVER FEAR! sorry.

    I miss Don LaFontaine.
