That commercial had great footage of BOTH the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, and, of course, the incomparable Boeing 747. It seems that TWA used the 747 on its international flights, while the L-1011 TriStar was used on its North American and Caribbean routes.
@tiadaid Yes, you are right! Unfortunately, the taping of Super Bowl XVIII that was on this VHS was mostly taped over by a showing of Wizard of Oz. Otherwise, I would have a lot more of the commercials, and perhaps something to do with the famous Apple commercial (thing is it's already posted almost everywhere).
@lsnows Nothing to spoil for me the game had already been won by the 'skins at the time this aired... you can actually see it in my other video of Super Bowl XVIII postgame show. Plus the fact I wasn't even around in 1984.
Is the Herst Castle such a big icon that it'd be given an appearance on this commercial? I'd think that the Golden Gate Bridge or something of an equal magnitude would be shown.
@scaremenga Hearst Castle you mean... I think they added it in just to show a unique landmark from the air. I also figure the coastline scenes were also from California, as well as the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The Eiffel Tower appears to be the only international scene here.
i worked on TWA at O&M when this :60 was made in 1984. Research showed that "hassle-free" "wide-body" "business class" and "fly's everywhere" were TWA image positives. an ad was needed to support these points and be a stop-gap until totally new creative could be made. Lots of old footage was dug up, edited for the super bowl. Re-scoring "You're Going to Like Us. TWA" was the last thing.. A new score had to support "calm" and "hassle-free". It would also help if it was less strident. And it was.
Ohh... the thing is if the footage here was really that old than most likely it would have been in black and white with piston-powered planes pre-Jet age, as this video is almost 26 years old. What kind of "re-scoring" of the chorus did they have to do?
Imagine a commercial like that now?! There would have to be some hispanics in it, some blacks, some orientals, some arabs and then white. (The pilot would have to be black of course) Hope I didn't offend anyone, I just think it is the truth, that's all.
Fantastic, never heard that version of "You're gonna like us" music. TWA did make some really good commercials, and this is up there with the better ones in my opinion. Thanks so much for posting.
It's a shame we're most likely never going to see airlines like this anymore, although JetBlue is making a genuine effort. Also, this commercial is nice and calming, unlike the ones of today.
I never have seen this commercial before. However, it reminds me that this was truly a great airline and I feel for all the former TW people out there in the airline world.
i am sorry for what haooened to your Pops. He should be flying a widebody somewhere. I am a former NW employee and I have senn what greed and disloyalty can do. Airlines will never be what they used to be. God bless you Dad and I hope he is still flying somwhere. E

The same year Apple introduced their 1984 commercial - the ad that was played only once (or so they told)

The Redskins got their asses handed to them by the Raiders in that game. I think it was 38-9. Sorry to spoil the outcome.

Agreed 100%. Thank Carl Icahn for raping and destroying one of the aviation greats.

@BettinaBalser TWA Flight 800 didn't help either... same thing with Pan Am after Lockerbie and ValuJet after its Everglades crash.

Actually TWA was betrayed by its managers.. they chose not to reinvest or make the cuts necessary to survive.. stockholders held sway in the end..
