@xX20lindsay08Xx I would but I felt weird enough just filming this because I didn't know either one of the soldiers. I do feel bad a bit for not thanking them for their service.
@combatkevin123 Sometimes that's all it takes. :) When you're on that long trip home and you reach the end, you're just so glad to be home.
My second deployment I came home to nothing, and my ride from the airport was even late lol. But I live and work with the knowledge that many appreciate what the military does so every handshake and small gesture is appreciated. :)
It's funny you always get stuck at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport! It took me 2 days to catch a plane after waiting n line for hours!!! It was tough. It was because of the weather. Anyways, there are no troops in my country, however I'm really proud of all the troops around the world for leaving their families and fight for their countries.
When I see soldiers in the airport, I get so teary-eyed. They are such beatufiul, strong people. It's sad that people just walk past them like nothing. They risk their lives for us. I know I embarrass my family when I do this, but I have to go up to soldiers in the airport to say thank you. Most of them are extremely nice and I think want to hear it, too.
I would have clapped for these soldiers. I don't give a damn if you're against the war, you support our troops! These guys fight for our freedom and security, and the least we can do is share some appreciation for the hard work these fine young americans do for us on a daily basis!
My husband got home from Afghanistan about two weeks ago. We live in Las Vegas. Not one single person said/did anything to recognize their service. It was a shame that I was the only one cheering on the three guys in uniform that I saw!
I know what you mean. When I saw those soldiers come out of that gate in Atlanta's airport, no one around me did anything. I wanted to thank the soldiers for their service but didn't want to be stared at.
The public has a short attention span - most people are more concerned with Amercian Idol than the 2 wars we are currently engaged in, In 2007 - the whole Airport in Atlanta lined up when we came back from OEF - In San Antonio, there were more crowds, people shaking your hand.
It doesn't surprise me that many people have forgotten about those serving.
@sn00kz Yeah it really is a shame. I wish people did it more often. I myself am responsible for not doing so. I did however thank an air force officer I believe at a supercuts. I tried to make people start clapping at an airport when I saw a veteran but I guess it was too loud for anyone to hear how disappointing...
That's really sad for the soldiers & their families. But part of the reason people might not be cheering is because of the motives of the war, which are an abomination, and reflect none of the decency and valour of those good people who are sent to fight it.
Those who believe it to be a good war, but don't cheer for the soldiers are a disgrace - ignorant on 2 counts, and selfish.
Those who couldn't give a crap one way or the other, are just shocking.
@sn00kz Sometimes people feel awkward, especially during times when soldiers are being welcomed home by their loved ones. That welcome seems private and interrupting to say thanks feels like an intrusion. So please understand that silence is often a respect for privacy. But ALWAYS the troops and their families are appreciated. God bless your husband for his service and you for your sacrifice. Don't EVER think you're not appreciated. THANK YOU!!!
Our troops get just as much support as yours do. Back in June this year my home town in England was practically shut down when our troops arrived back from Afghanistan and there thousands and thousands of people lining the streets waving flags and welcoming our troops home.
It was the largest homecoming welcome I have ever seen.
Disregard my last comment. If you are reffering to me, then I meant here in the US not England. I tend not to read fully and make mistakes like I did with that comment months ago. Sorry.
What a great sight.Lucky for you you're not in England, because you would of been called racist for waving the flag of your OWN country.Plus there would of been groups of muslims protesting and calling US soldiers animals and murderes.Yes i know thats hard to believe but thats whats happening here. Were going to vote BNP and rid England of these scum.God bless all the US soldiers! from everyone in England.
There was a parade and the vast majority of the people lining the streets cheered. It was only a few muslim scumbags standing in the corner protesting but they ended up with most of the attention.
In my own town in England there were THOUSANDS of people lining the streets applauding our troops when they arrived back from Afghanistan in June this year. I've never in my life seen such support for our troops.
It was one of the biggest homecoming welcomes I have ever seen.
"Believe it or not, they get extremely uncomfortable and embarassed when people do this"...this is actually true for me, and to this day I still feel like I don't deserve any thanks, I wasn't some big bad infantry guy, or a tanker, or a sniper, or a medic or a scout or mortar, I was just the brigade mailclerk, I took care of my soldiers and got the best mailroom in the green zone during an inspection but I was just doing my job, nothing more, nothing less.
I agree. I came home on R&R in July through Atlanta. It was extremely awkward for me. Almost eerie. All I wanted to do was catch my connecting flight.
it's when everyone does their job that everyone comes home safe. I just want to thank you. You may not feel like it but you are brave and you are a hero.
I just want to say; don't put yourself down. There's reasons why I am not in the military. Maybe I can't trust my own govt., maybe I am just a wuss. But the job needs to be done. By enlisting yourself, you are putting yourself in harm's way so I wouldn't have to do it. This is earning my respect regardless if you are a mailman, logistic personnel or latrine inspector.
P.S.: Remember that "I was just doing my Job" is the favorite catch phrase of heroes. Thank you for your service.
My husband came home through Dallas/Ft.Worth. People cheered, and thanked him, and he would get really embarrassed over it as well. I thought it was sweet, but he said 'we're doing our job.' And left it at that. He was a Scout, and trust me you guys helped more than you'll ever know...
I read Alesia Hollidays book; "Emails to the front" and it really opened my eyes.
So Crystal, I would like to say thank you, for all the hard, difficult, lonely times that you and your family go through when your husband is away. All for the freedom of others. Thank you!
Oh crap! a scout! that is a VERY dangerous because sometimes more than others your alone to check out and bring back intel on enemy infantry. that is TOPS in my book. True Bravery, not alot of people can do what he does. Glad he's back home nice and safe.
Believe it or not, they get extremely uncomfortable and embarassed when people do this. They aren't god, they are soldiers. For them, being exhausted, all they want is to come home to a wife and kids or their Girlfriend and enjoy a nice quiet relaxing time, not be cheered on by people that don't understand much.
from what my brother told me all his platoon would ever talk about was getting home to family and being shown love in front of all the other soldiers and families - it makes them feel like it's worth it from what my brother told me

Good for you. I'm not a soldier, nor have I any family military history. So this is NOT biased.
I just salute you for the universal respect & decency you've just shown.
Damn fine thing to do. I wish there were a lot more of it.
It'd end all wars.
