Nice job. Question: How do you keep the water from getting inside the columns? Is there any flashing on top of the columns? Did you make drain holes on the bottom base?
There is a 4x4 post running through the columns that the cross beams are bolted to with 2 long 3/4" lag bolts. This is just one video in a series of over 15 showing the whole process. Check it out on ehow.

It looks nice but I cant believe you have attached them with screws. You should use joist hangers and brackets.

screws will work.
as for permanently undisturbed i think 2 screws would hold better than 2 nails. as for shear force.... thats a different story.
