  • 2:15 -While holding up two fingers- "So you've seen three things..." Thumbs up if you caught that before reading this.

  • @dallanlee But with a thumb up.. that'd be three! ;)

  • Using 2 wire mesh waste baskets from an office supply store, one inverted upon the other with proper mechanical and electrical bonding and a resealable access panel, ( one bottom? ), may be inexpensive and effective with intensive grounding of course.

Possibly holding laptops, radios, coded Automobile keys, flashlights and batteries ... and a nice music player for stress reduction after you find all your My-Book 2 Terabyte Data is uncorrupted, of course. just hope your network is up too.

  • naja keiner deutsch hihi

  • Walter Bishop...

  • reminiscent of Emmet Brown. I love science! ^ ^

  • Walter Lewin is amazing.

  • Dr. Emmett Lathrop Brown!!!

  • He has a Dutch accent somehow.

  • he sounds like one of the dudes on metalocalypse

  • Wow! Physics can be fun! It's wonderful to see a teacher who LOVES the subject!

  • The professor is Walter Lewin who teachs physics at MIT

  • I meant a faraday cage

  • And that's why MIT is number 1 in technology. My physics professor was boring...and here you see a guy who brings a pantograph in his class.

  • MARTY! It says here... that a bolt of lightning is going to strike the clock tower at precisely 10:04pm, next Saturday night! If... If we could somehow... *harness* this lightning... *channel* it... into the flux capacitor... it just might work. Next Saturday night, we're sending you back to the future!

  • @Jowsh lol he does look like doc.

  • @Jowsh Ok,doc.I'll make sure I have clean underwear.

  • At 0:43: A van de graaf generator is almost 99% of the time negative

  • THANK YOU, PROF ;-)

  • wow exelentt!!!

  • Check out Wikipedia for Walter Lewin

A very vivid professor. According to Wikipedia his nationality is Dutch

  • Walter Lewin, physics prof at MIT

  • Excellent demo. He reminds me of the Professor in "Back to the Future", Emmit Brown.. Anyway, I will build a Racing Pigeon Loft based on the principles of The Fadaday Cage to shield my pigeons from adverse magnetic fields inspired by Eric Limbourg.

  • If my teachers were like that I'd actually be interested

  • hmm he says Cambridge, so maybe thats where he teaches.

  • This guy reminds me of the professor character on "The hillarious house of count Frightenstein"

  • Faradey rules !) I'm proud Faraday as he study the Bible .

  • Ummmmmm......What was that sound @ 1:54 ?

  • @TheCessnaDriver This is the brilliant Professor Walter Lewin from MIT. MIT open courses on physics:

    Prof. Walter Lewin

  • is he dutch ???

  • @sagaertb His accent definitely sounds Western European, possibly Dutch or Flemish.

  • @NuvolariF1 As far as I can hear, he is dutch. 100%

  • @kaaitj Thank you. I have some Dutch friends and from neighboring countries: Belgium and Germany. There are distinct accent among them, language shares similarities also.

  • aha hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • @3:42 he says "... your car is a Faraday Cage."

So anyone who says, "If lightning strikes your vehicle while you're in it, you'll be safe as long as you aren't touching any metal." are wrong, because it makes sense that nothing inside the car would get electrocuted since the charge is finding the easiest path to the ground.

If you're in your car and your car gets hit by lightning, @ 6:29 he confirms this, it doesn't matter if you're touching metal or not.

    You're safe either way!

  • I felt compelled to post this, because my mom was always fearful of thunderstorms because houses she'd lived in had been hit by lightning and fire started. So during thunderstorms, we'd all go for a drive, and for years we were told that we'd be safe if we weren't touching metal. But now I know without a shadow of a doubt, we'd have been safe in the car whether or not any of us were touching metal.

Thanks for posting this vid, and thanks to the Professor for teaching in memorable ways.

  • @sean83716 Wtf? What did they tell you dude...holy shit? May i just ask how old are you? If you'r like 7 i understand O_O

  • Very cool. =)

  • Excellent. The creative, mad, scientific professor! Thank you.

  • To everyone asking, the link at the beginning says mit.edu, so I'd guess MIT. Good luck getting into a lecture lol.

  • Where does this guy teach? He's awesome!

  • you can tell from his hair that he likes playing with electricity

  • what is that radio saying? the woman who opposes embalming?

  • thumbs up if u want this guy as your teacher

  • This guy is Dr. Emmet Browns brother .... Cool

  • You are amazing!

  • MIT 802 Prof. Walter Lewin :) im loving his lectures and thanx to MIT OCW by the way

  • Verry best explanation of the faraday cage, every teacher should be like him. He sounds like a dutchman, is that true?

  • gotta love MIT

  • very nice presentation!

  • is the prof standing on a non-conducting platform inside the Faraday cage? Also, if the prof touches the inner surface of the cage and if the platform is conducting, then he will get electrocuted, right ? Amazing video though.

  • @kudekariyo: 1) Non-conducting platform is unnecessary. Faraday cage nullifies the electric field inside of it. 2) He is touching the ground. Its just that the current goes around him and once it gets to the ground it doesnt have to through him because its got to its destination, the ground.

  • What a wonderful teacher

  • Now this is a physics professor. The one I had was hardly able to play videos from a laserdisc, let alone conduct a simple experiment himself.

  • Awesome cool professor, wish i had teachers like that

  • the best professor ever

  • @TheFiddog He is Doc from back to the future...

  • Wow, through all my learning, searching and researching I have learned some new things tonight and received an affirmation; that our automobiles are Faraday Cages by proxy. Thank You very much for that. This is what makes YouTube great! :-)

  • What a cool professor.

  • you must be a retard,.. lol

  • because he educates people with brains as to how the universe functions, so there are less mouth breathers like yourself around

  • Such a cool prof...!

  • He's great!! cooooool!!!

  • So this must be the scientific explanation to why I covered the pickupcavities and the back of the pickguard of my Fender Stratocaster electric guitar with copperfoil! Now my guitar doesn't give that annoying 60 cycle hum! Now why did I drop physics...I could have been good at it being inspired by a teacher like Walter Lewin... Somebody tell that man he's making a difference!!

  • Walter Lewin is an awesome physics lecturer

  • q piola el profe ese :D

  • " I heard a spark...sparks are always bad.

LMAO....I love this guy. A regular Mad Scientist.

  • he looks like a mad scientist

  • @greywolf424 = cock goblin

  • @buffboynick YES WE ALL KNOW WHAT YOU ARE.

  • man this teacher is so great ! XD

  • All I know is, he's Dutch

  • This guy reminds me of my Austrian physics prof. ... he was really good too.

  • He is really good!!!

  • This is a REAL TEACHER. Beautiful Beautiful.

  • I thought good professors are only in movies.. He seems an excelent teacher. who is he ? anybody know ?

  • @fawks0512

Walter Lewin, professor of Physics, MIT. One of the greats.

  • @fawks0512 well i can u he's dutch....

  • @fawks0512 PROFESSOR LEWIN @ MIT....

  • @fawks0512 He is a professor of physics at MIT his name is Dr. Walter Lewin. You can dowload many lectures by him , for free, at itunesU. Just type in MIT physics and download physics 1-3. Hope this helped!

  • @fawks0512 Walter Lewin over at MIT.

  • @fawks0512 all I can tell you is that his accent is dutch

  • @fawks0512 i think that dude is from MIT. I have seen some of his onlnie courses

  • @fawks0512 Walter Lewin, teaches classical mechanics at MIT.

  • it's amazing. I'm in 10th grade in germany and my english is not the best, but i understood everything..really amazing, I'm very happy. thank you

  • MIT ftw

  • great =), i wish he would be my circuit professor xd

  • Really nice, wish my professors could be like that one. It would be a lot easier to learn.

    Regards.

  • Take a cigar box, line the inside and lid with aluminum foil, and play a radio loudly, then put it in the box. The radio goes to static. The box doesn't even need to be grounded.

  • Walter Lewin is the best :))

  • so could this shield sensitive electronics from an EMP?

  • Indeed it can.
