Using 2 wire mesh waste baskets from an office supply store, one inverted upon the other with proper mechanical and electrical bonding and a resealable access panel, ( one bottom? ), may be inexpensive and effective with intensive grounding of course.
Possibly holding laptops, radios, coded Automobile keys, flashlights and batteries ... and a nice music player for stress reduction after you find all your My-Book 2 Terabyte Data is uncorrupted, of course. just hope your network is up too.
MARTY! It says here... that a bolt of lightning is going to strike the clock tower at precisely 10:04pm, next Saturday night! If... If we could somehow... *harness* this lightning... *channel* it... into the flux capacitor... it just might work. Next Saturday night, we're sending you back to the future!
Excellent demo. He reminds me of the Professor in "Back to the Future", Emmit Brown.. Anyway, I will build a Racing Pigeon Loft based on the principles of The Fadaday Cage to shield my pigeons from adverse magnetic fields inspired by Eric Limbourg.
@kaaitj Thank you. I have some Dutch friends and from neighboring countries: Belgium and Germany. There are distinct accent among them, language shares similarities also.
It would have been funnier (and made more sense as to why he reacted to the radio the way he did @ 4:41) if the radio voice was announcing lightning in the forecast.
So anyone who says, "If lightning strikes your vehicle while you're in it, you'll be safe as long as you aren't touching any metal." are wrong, because it makes sense that nothing inside the car would get electrocuted since the charge is finding the easiest path to the ground.
If you're in your car and your car gets hit by lightning, @ 6:29 he confirms this, it doesn't matter if you're touching metal or not.
I felt compelled to post this, because my mom was always fearful of thunderstorms because houses she'd lived in had been hit by lightning and fire started. So during thunderstorms, we'd all go for a drive, and for years we were told that we'd be safe if we weren't touching metal. But now I know without a shadow of a doubt, we'd have been safe in the car whether or not any of us were touching metal.
Thanks for posting this vid, and thanks to the Professor for teaching in memorable ways.
is the prof standing on a non-conducting platform inside the Faraday cage? Also, if the prof touches the inner surface of the cage and if the platform is conducting, then he will get electrocuted, right ? Amazing video though.
@kudekariyo: 1) Non-conducting platform is unnecessary. Faraday cage nullifies the electric field inside of it. 2) He is touching the ground. Its just that the current goes around him and once it gets to the ground it doesnt have to through him because its got to its destination, the ground.
Wow, through all my learning, searching and researching I have learned some new things tonight and received an affirmation; that our automobiles are Faraday Cages by proxy. Thank You very much for that. This is what makes YouTube great! :-)
So this must be the scientific explanation to why I covered the pickupcavities and the back of the pickguard of my Fender Stratocaster electric guitar with copperfoil! Now my guitar doesn't give that annoying 60 cycle hum! Now why did I drop physics...I could have been good at it being inspired by a teacher like Walter Lewin... Somebody tell that man he's making a difference!!
@fawks0512 He is a professor of physics at MIT his name is Dr. Walter Lewin. You can dowload many lectures by him , for free, at itunesU. Just type in MIT physics and download physics 1-3. Hope this helped!
Take a cigar box, line the inside and lid with aluminum foil, and play a radio loudly, then put it in the box. The radio goes to static. The box doesn't even need to be grounded.
2:15 -While holding up two fingers- "So you've seen three things..." Thumbs up if you caught that before reading this.
