Marx saw aspects of religion as hegemony and wrote heavily about a state of false class consciousness and ruling class ideology. A structure embedded within this 'illusion' was religion along side others such as education and media.
very slowly people will shake off the chains or religion through acedemic persuit and infuence in the west, with the communal freedom people will begin to explore new effective options out of capitalism and eventually usher into a new era where religion and capitalism become barbaric systems of the past
@acerb45666555 This video focuses only on a sociological reading of *religion.* There are many other videos dealing with the role of government on dominating the minds and private lives of people. Thanks for your comment.
@LeviProductions1 He did not hate Christianity more the use of it; the way it is there to control the proletariat and is manipulated to exploit the less fortunate members of society.
@jokebooks These ideas are not necessarily nice ideas, they are more harsh and truthful - people (especially religious ones) don't like the idea that they are being manipulated by a capitalist society so that they remain in "check" and controlled by the bourgeoisie or upper classes. If I told you that something you firmly believed in was in fact a lie, something you've believed in yur whole life. If i claimed that it was there to manipulate you - You'd be upset. This is why people get upset :)
@LeviProductions1 - I think the American affluent materialistic lifestyle of using the rest of the world and third world laborers for our benefit pretty much sums it up.
Don't even get me started on religion - It is my passion to dislike religion with a vengeance. It is against all things sane and wholesome on this natural Earth. And religion gives people an EXCUSE not to take care of this planet while they are alive. Because their life supposedly is nothing compared to their "glorious eternity in heaven." I am and always will be scientifically minded - it is in our nature to ponder questions. If you could prove to me a god, then I ask, "What made God!"
@reyty2 ....."Religion plays a social function in influencing the beliefs & practices of society"........which creates another point........"Marxism plays a social function in influencing the beliefs & practices of society".......get my point?
@mycatisromeo What makes you think that all religion incites a heaven and a hell. Also, (don't worry, I'm an atheist) by posing the question of what made god you have to also ask what made the universe? It goes on a trail until you must admit one of two things: 1) you don't know what made the universe because you have a finite mind that cannot imagine a logical explanation. 2) The universe is self sufficient and created itself. However, these exact things can apply to got as well.
@mycatisromeo so your against faith... or religion?? i only ask because as an athiest myself, weber's work makes you see that that organized religion gives humans something that we havent managed to replace yet... not on mass anyways....
@mycatisromeo Have you read the work of Nicholas Wade? Religion could be innate in us. Also think about this are economists religious about the free market (even though that also doesn't exist)
@LoveImmie It's a question of translation. At any rate, an opiate is a narcotic drug that contains opium or an opium derivative; hence, it's not a big issue, as opium & opiate are related. Thanks.
thank you soo muchh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was searching for this forever! so simple and easy thank you alot it helped me alot for my sociology exam on those 3 amazing people!
I think this is the greatest flaw in religious sociology, observing religious function is a void enterprise if the theology that underpins it is devoid. Much of what they wrote is accurate, yet secularisation has only really occurred in Europe. So there must be more to religion than just functionality surely?
A nice overview from the fathers of sociology! It seems that all three ultimately agreed that technological/social advance 'modernity' would bring about secularisation.

Christianity is focused on much higher things than meager society. It is totally focused on God which is absolutely independent of society. Second how much money you make can't tell you if you are saved or not it is your free choice.
The problem with these sociologists is that they treated Christianity as a mere social function rather than a spiritual relationship. Christianity is not about defining society, or establishing a collective conscience it centers totally on the individual soul and God. Christianity encourages people to stand up against suffering, oppression, and injustice and Christianity has no status quo because it teaches people not to be conformed to this world.
Jesus was socialized with a Jewish ideology. He was however very syncretic. It wasn't religion that he wasn't a fan of but the misuse of religion to dominate others in an unmoral fashion.
Thanks for this... doing my sociology exam next week on marx weber and durkheims view on religion and that helped a lot.. Thanks again. (oh and i used the pause button, no big deal for me :)
Thanks reyty2. buzzmaxwell, I agree with you as well on the speed. But it was reyty2's estimate without knowing the reading rate of others. I'm sure they were also focused on keeping it synced to the song. Sure reyty2 could remake the video, but I don't think purifying it of this minor imperfection is worth the time.
Regular youtubers know that you can click the STOP button to pause the video temporarily. That is also common sense for regular VHS videos & DVDs. You need more effort than most people to find solutions in using youtube videos. I guess my tutoring you on using the STOP functionality would help you in all your future youtube experience. Peace!
oh my where do I start? I think Marx would be a little disappointed that you place such a small value on your work and that of the orchestra which would be and is rendered useless when using the technology of the pause button in lieu of the foresight in producing a usable powerpoint. weber would nonetheless understand your attempt to stratify yourself from impure lower group member such as myself..so enjoy your elitist attitude without the slower readers such as myself..umm kay?
that was not what i presented.i said that the interruption in the music when using the pause button takes away from your presentation material, editing and the music being interrupted.i am now given negative ratings for an open and honest feedback asking for a little more reading time on your slides.on all your powerpoints here on youtube not just this one.i don't want to sound like i am attacking you, but it appears you are in this more for you than me.i hope you can get that worked out some day
I gave you an open and honest reply "Regular youtubers know that you can click the STOP button to pause the video temporarily" to your open and honest feedback.
@buzzmaxwell I do agree with you. The slides are a bit fast. stopping and pausing will in a way spoils the whole viewing experience. Overall good video anyway. helped me alot
Thanks for your comment. I've been following your video blogs. You have very funny and witty but very serious remarks. Keep up your great work! Cheers.
This is a brilliant way 2 sum-up Sociology of Religion. It brings out all the important points in a very simple and tabular form.
Thank you for making this video....
It was of great help......
Can u please tell me what music is being played in the background, I've gotten addicted 2 it and cant seem 2 figure out what is it called.?
Thanks a lot again....
