I was so in love with her in the seventies (high school). My mom used to say I was going to my room for "a shot of Striesand". Barbra got me through some pretty tough times.
This is easily one of Barbra's best performances ever captured for the television cameras. Incidentally, it was the last time we saw the skyscraper do and the flowing chiffon; for the new more youthful 'easy listening' pop/rock Barbra was about to emerge (to rule the '70s).
The reappearance of this clip, once available on Youtube a couple of years ago but was mysteriously scraped, is long due. Thank you very much, "themirrorhastwofaces".
"I have NO recollaction on that movie", "I was too young for the role"....why she's been avoiding talk about Hello Dolly, forever? This must be THE ONLY time she sang live songs from H.D. Did she really hate the experience that much that she only has negative comments on the film? Wasn't she too young for FUNNY LADY? wans't she too old for YENTL? wasn't she too old even for FUNNY GIRL? she NEVER complains about those facts....Hello Dolly is a Master Piece when it comes to musical movies!!
I remember seeing this amazing performance when originally broadcast... possibly her first live singing appearance after winning the Oscar for "Funny Girl". It gives me goosebumps to see the entire show again. THANK YOU !! Her live appearances on television in the late 60's and 70's were extremely rare. Fans waited -- like junkies for a shot of pure Barbra!! Her voice was a sonic boom of clarity and joy... This medley and the Burt Bacharach Special are deeply moving to see -- once again !!
All I can say that ,early Barbra, is absolutely incredible. The class, style, sophistication, and the quirky energy, were part of her mystique. The voice was in it's prime and I'm so glad I was alive back then when her TV appearances were like major video releases., She was ahead of her time and kicked some serious butt. I love you Barbra and always will.
Flawless performance.. this is the raw Barbra when she sang from the gut...I just wish she had done more live concerts in her prime. I would have seen every one!
The more I learn, the more I see of her, the more I come to the realization that she isn't just once in a lifetime. She's once. There hasn't been and I doubt there ever will be anyone like her again. She's a unique, rare, and beautiful talent that is so misunderstood and so unbelievably unappreciated by the youth of today. I grew up listening to her. She's my security blanket.
At her prime she would have destroyed any singer that was and is... even black singers that are known for their extremely powerful voices would be trumped by her divine voice
THIS IS AN AMAZING POST!!...VERY RARE ....AND SO WONDERFUL TO BE ABLE TO WATCH!!.......it really touched me deeply to see this and enjoy this...thank you so much! LOVE IT!
Simply the BEST,& I aint referring to Tina Turner, lol! No disrespect to Ms Turner by the way! But one would have to be somewhat lacking in sanity to NOT have the greatest of respect for this divine voice! She quite simply is a musical instrument. And it is fantastic that we have the chance to view such a treasured early work of hers.
There will never be anyone like her again. Like "buttah"
I think we all forget just how amazing barbra's voice was at her peak. She still has a wonderful voice and beautiful phrasing, but in her prime she was a freak of nature, her singing had such power and an almost divine quality. Her strange looks and nose contributed to the sound she made...there will never be such a "perfect storm" of qualities that add up to her vocal talent and gifts.
A wonderful reminded of what a brilliant comedienne this woman is...

Where are the vocal talents geniuses like this today? Today, singers hide behind costumes and theatrics.
