he needs a cage as wide as his wing span. I tend to go larger. He also needs some wood toys to chew on. Or puzzle bird toys you can buy at pet stores. They can get depressed and kill themselves. He seems to be a sweetie.
Dexta's a cutie :) My family's 2 blue fronts loved taking showers, or misted with a water bottle. Not sure how old they were, but one had to be 30+. Wow Dexta's cage is antique but I wonder if you changed it on him after all this time,if he'd be weirded out. FYI Prevue stopped making that model after complaints about the gradual reduction in bar spacing at the top. (Wings, legs getting tangled in) I worked in a bird store when I was 19-20. That was in the 90s. Anyway thanks for sharing yr bird!
Cool Parrots can out live people. Do you take your bird in the shower. They love the warm mist not direct spay. In the rain forest they get wet. The feathers seem a little tattatered. Also round cages suck, a big squre one is better. At night a cover is nice for them,
Yeah, I watched it again. You could improve his feathers with the bathing, the preening (just crack those feather sheaths, he'll shake off the crumbs) and he absolutely needs a bigger cage! What's happening is when he stretches his wings fully, his feathers get beaten up by the bars. He's definitely happy and healthy, but you need to make those changes. Oh, and the toys.
By the way, a scruffy appearance is not necessarily a sign of poor care/grooming. Elderly parrots can sometimes have poor feather quality, or thin feathers. It's pretty common in old birds. If you're concerned, take him to a vet.
40 is not elderly for an Amazon. And I just can't agree that it's common for older parrots to have a scruffy appearance - their plummage actually improves. Amazons love showers. At 1st a even thought he was wet. Regular showers should help. Also, you need to make like a bird and preen his head feathers! Key points - Amazon rarely destroy their feathers, they can live to 100, a 40 year old Amazon is comparably a 40 year old person. They are hardy, and less prone to parrot deseases.
I agree that something could be done for his plumage and cage. Does Dexta have the ability to fly - I hope this is something you can let him do in your care. Birds are meant to fly and not live in a cage.
Yeah, and some toys too. Parrots are incredibly intelligent and need something to occupy their minds and prevent boredom. They spend a lot of time in the wild playing, covering huge distances and if they're in captivity, the least you can do is provide some mental stimulation, a larger cage and better care, which you clearly are not doing. If you don't want to be bothered to do that or can't afford it, why did you even get a parrot in the first place???
Parrots are wonderful companions. I should know, as I have 3 living with me and occasionally 6. He looks like a Blue front amazon and can you maybe getv him a larger cage and more safe parrot toys...please. He is a sweetie and I know you are proud that he is your parrot companion! I have a YNA companion, a Grey and a female Ekkie. Parrots are special!
I forgot to say that it's nice that you keep the door always open but he also needs an appropriate cage so he has a retreat when he wants to feel safe or wants privacy.
He gets quite attached to his cage! but the door to the cage is always open, and he walks around alot and even around the room when he's adventurous! I inherited him from my Grandfather.
Can you teach him to say 'get off my lawn you kids!'?

@mimi2957 That depends on what kind of amazone it is. A bleufront can live to 100 years but a Yellow shouldered is very old by 45 years of age.

Round cages are really wrong to keep parrots in. They need corners where they can feel safe.
He also needs a lot larger cage with toys.
If you really care about his wellbeing, please, please find him a new appropriate cage.

DITTO!!!! Take him in the shower, he seems like the type that might enjoy it! Mine do.
