The twin pieces are held somewhat in place by friction and will stay (if you don't shake the box too much) in either the locked or unlocked position. The box will stay in th eopen position until changed and vice-versa.

when you put the two pieces back to lock it though, is it possible that the pieces that hold it locked dont move and remain unlocked?
