The Mary Bradley in the song was a famous South London transvestite prostitute who used to hang out around Clapham Common and South London clubs and pubs in the 1970s and 80s. Jona, a denizen of the area around the Elephant and Castle, near where he lives in Streatham, was Marys acquaintance at the time, and celebrated him in Stop the Cavalry. Sadly, Mary died in 2005.
