  • I highly recommend the Children of Dune soundtrack, and the battlestar galactica soundtrack if you want to hear beautiful Duduk being played... Ian, what is an update on your playing? get soem good sounds out of it?

  • ok, I just got my duduk in the mail today! so excited...it smells like fire and smoke.. I guess that is how you make them in Armenia but it sounds so beautiful when played correctly.. ive been trying to hack at it and play for about 20 minutes and am really working on gettign a decent sound out of it.. I heard you drop some water into the reed first to wet it then play.

  • Great Armenian Instrument. TURKS, STOP BEING RETARDS. YOU GUYS ONLY EAT HUMANS, NOTHING MORE OR LESS

  • HAYASTAN INSTRUMENT

  • правильно ,всемирный Армянский дудук

  • i happen to know for a fact that MrDjrob is correct, this is in fact an Armenian Instrument dating back some 3000 years! So indeed it is a beautiful and Ancient instrument,so plz lets just enjoy the music and fight or argue about who did what to whom, but be thankful we have life to enjoy such gifts that have been givin to us.

  • Duduk dot com makes something they call a Clarduk, that's basically a duduk with a clarinet mouthpiece. I figure that'll help with the brain damage thing lol.

  • DUDUK THIS ARMENIAN INSTRUMENT OKEY ? OK !

  • The best player is Iroh :p

  • hey were did you get your duduk? and how much was it?

  • @gwood1991 $50 at ebay incl. shipping fees. I'm getting one!

  • IT'S A FUCKING AMERICAN INSTRUMENT STOP ARGUING ABOUT THIS YOU ARE ALL WRONG

  • Few notes that might help you out

    1) Don't use your teeth. If you watch other videos of masters, they puff out their cheeks and use only their lips to play. that means you need to strengthen your lips and cheeks but thats the way to get the correct sound.

    2) use the fingertips on the top hand and the middle-section "cushion" of the fingers on the lower hand.

    3) when doing half-holes: for top hand, lift the fingertip vertically. for lower hand, tilt it horizontally.

    4) practice :)

  • Very good performance! I'm more than a year to play the duduk. I'm from Russia! I really enjoyed your performance, but there are small errors! Incorrect vibrato and air supply. You need cheeks inflating :))) But in general - it is excellent! You feel the sound of this instrument!!! And this is most important!

  • Pretty good for your first try :)

  • What notes does that play. I mean without half-holing or cross fingering or anything, just from all closed to all open. I'm trying to figure out new scales for a research project.

  • @coyotecrow4 He doesn't half hole in the video but thats how you get the other notes.

  • @Ferruchio Yup. I see that. I'm just trying to figure the scale out so I can make a sideblown flute with the same scale. I have no experience with reed instruments and would pass out trying out a duduk. Flutes however, I got in the bag. Quenas to dizis to shakuhatchis to kavals and most stuff in between. I just like the note progression a duduk has, and want to emulate it. Maybe I oughta try a shvi or a bloul...

  • @coyotecrow4 There ara a bunch of websites on duduks online that explain the scale...just google it. I play the shvi as well its pretty easy. Its just like a recorder...good luck with the bloul though...Iv been trying to get a sound out of one for 2 months now....nothing. Its so hard I think lessons are required for this instrument.

  • @Ferruchio If the bloul is anything like a kaval, which folks tell me it is, you have to purse your lips slightly, like your'e whistling, and blow against the inner edge of one side. I usually blow against the left side, but then again, I learned everything backwards. I even play with my left hand on the bottom, right hand on top. Most folks tell me that's bad form, but after doing it for 8 years, I can't break the habit. I'm trying to make one outta PVC, but I have to get the scale right first.

  • your fingers are ugly - this is not duduk method

  • Look up Jivan or Djivan Gasparyan the Armenian master of duduk.

  • Hey I got my duduk too. Wow it is beautiful and imagine I played the whole day and I manage to play it... There are also some intruction of how to play in youtube. But what I wonder is why people play only using 8 holes while using the 9 holes (using both pinkys) is just a matter of getting used to.

  • Duduk isnt for jazz its made for slow traditional music, try looking at some traditional music

  • Ara du Hayes??? LoL

  • @Pivazi11 yete im het es, ha yes hay em

  • Very nice for first day. Idk if you know this already but the more u slide down the oval wooden thing on the top the less blowing power is required. Great vid and good job on the research.

  • Hi, so far I only played the piano and the flute but I have no experience in playing any reed instrument.. But I love the sound of th duduk. Do you think it would be necesary to play other reed instruments first?

  • @JosdeBuck if you play the flute then picking up another woodwind will not be totally alien to you but it will obviously be difficult for the first few months to play the double reed. but if you stick with it you will be great!

  • Great video Ian. I just received mine as well and your video was very helpful. I think the Fawn's lullaby in Narnia was a Duduk. I wanted whatever that instrument was since I heard that sound.

  • dude great job! im trying to learn duduk too and something i found helpful is placing your lips farther down the mouthpiece. it gives better control for vibrato and just sounds fuller. I hope that helps! keep it up man, God Bless

  • What are the notes in the scale? Not with cross fingering, just uncovering one hole at a time. I watched your hands and you didn't look like you skipped around too much. It seems like a very unique scale, and one I'd like to try and replicate.

  • you are a great man :)

  • thx man

  • OK WE GET THAT THE DUDUK IS AN ARMENIAN INSTRUMENT!

but you cannot tell anyone that the duduk is only for Armenians to play. Music is universal and for anybody. Nobody has the right to tell another person that they cannot play this beautiful instrument just because they are not Armenian.

By the way, im Turkish and i recognize the Armenian Genocide as a Genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire.

  • @wizmurat you're 100% right and thank you for looking past racial prejudices that both sides have and recognizing the genocide....

with people like you i have hope that armenians and turks will resolve our past and live as brothers again :)

  • @wizmurat You're a good person wizmurat. I don't think anyone was saying Ian shouldn't play the duduk, I encourage anyone that wants to give it a try to go for it, otherwise this beautiful instrument will decline in use and popularity.

  • @wizmurat

    commited by you turks yes!

  • @wizmurat Music is the universal language....there are no barriers. I'm Armenian and i enjoy Turkish music I actually play the Saz which is a Turkish instrument.

  • @Ferruchio GOOD ANSWER TO PEOPLE WHO BRAG ABOUT, IAM ASIAN I LOVE ALL KIND OF MUSIC.

  • @wizmurat Your comment about the genocide (?) has nothing to do with the video, totally out of context

  • @wizmurat Isn't the duduk an armenian instrument?

  • Good job ! I would like to buy an Armenian Duduk too.

  • That duduk is in E or A?

  • What I love about this instrument is it almost doesn't sound real. Does anyone understand what i mean? It's just this smallish recorder shaped instrument with a large double reed that produces a sound that I would use to describe the wind if it had emotions.

  • NICE! just bought one via internet> Never play with my mouth; i'm a guitarist, pianist, accordionist, steeldrummist and so on. I hope I can produce somthing on the duduk like you do!

  • not to get you greeks or turks sad or anything but Duduk is an Armenian instrument that was invented by Armenians thousands of years ago. Keep that instrument well its a masterpiece.

  • My guess is that while playing u were putting all ur effort into blowing uvdidnt realize the amazing, peaceful and breath taking sound uvwere producing, I justvbought one if these online and I can't wait to take it camping and to sit down on the top of a hill somewhere and play it :)

  • everyone knows that we(the greek) people origionally made it

  • lol poor turks xD trying to change history facts lol

  • duduk-balaban-zurna AZERBAIJANIAN INSTRUMENT!!!!!!!!

  • hey, that's not bad for the first day =) it also looks and sounds like another instrument called balaban.

  • what an armenian instrument? whahah it's a turkish instrument retard you guyz have it too but that's because the culture i think even your tiny land was from the turks at the time so just stop to try owning the turkish duduk asshole, even the name duduk is turkish it means flute so.....

  • Comment removed

  • @oes121189 Considering UNESCO has recognized the Duduk of being Armenian in origin I don't know what leg you have to stand on. Also while I am here, let me teach you a few things about your people. You come from Mongolia, a wandering nomadic horde that began expansion in the 6th century AD. You don't have a culture, only things you have were picked up and stolen along the way from Mongolia. The Duduk existed long before any Turks came to steal, kill, and pillage.

  • what an armenian instrument? whahah it's a turkish instrument retard you guyz have it too but that's because the culture i think even your tiny land was from the turks at the time so just stop to try owning the turkish duduk asshole

  • hey buddy, you have to make your cheeks bigger. Its NOT the same way you play a clarinet.

  • i like it :D good job.. i wish i could play like you haha

  • your finger positining is wrong. U try to play it like a flute

  • well done mate

  • its good that you lake this but you mast first leart my frends

  • viva Armenia, viva duduk!!!!!

  • it looks like it takes a lot of breath pressure!

  • too much reverb

  • its a very old instrument and its much harder to play then a saxophone. not bad for a beginner.

  • @GeoTaoKlarjetMoschoi lmao ... Georgian instrument ? fuck, Wikipedia is your friend, it's armenian

  • @ExosMxRevolution Its Georgian armenians are georgians who lost their language and became completely Indo-IRanian you are 90 % Persian and this is not Persian

  • "it makes me happy" lol Awesome bro, I actually liked the stuff you did. And sorry for all the azeri/turkic horde bothering you, you're absolutely right this instrument originated in Armenia its recorded in ancient manuscripts and rock carvings predating the birth of Christ when the word turk wasn't even invented. Also it's made of apricot wood for a reason the Latin name for apricot is Prunus Armeniaca. But, good job on your first day I know I would do much worse lol. Take care!

  • looks like he's about to pop! lol duduk is a difficult instrument to play. you have to let your cheeks fill with air. don't tighten your cheek muscles like sax or clarinet. watch Jivan Gasparian

  • Duduk sounds beautifull but it really seems you get out of breath when you play it :)

  • From where did you get this thing? I dying to get my hands on one, but i don't want to buy one without any sort of knowledge about quality. Got any tips?

Awesome playing for being the first day of play. Good luck!

  • wow one day and you got it down pretty good where and how much did you pay and get it thanks calmingwind

  • fk off its ARMENIAN!!!!!! FK THE TURKISH LIES! FK OFF AZARBAIJAN

  • pretty good for a beginner

  • Holy crap, this is your first day?

  • Please Someone can make a movie with duduk, show where he/she sets fingers to make good song... easy fingermoves but nice song :( please someone ? im a newby and need a song for school PLEASE ? ive got no problems with my breath... just the fingers

  • mines pretty hard to play too

you gotta moisten the reed pretty well

also try easing in when you blow cause ig you blow too hard at the start the air pressure will close the reed

  • i've heard from some people that you shouldn't play it with the tips of your fingers

  • IAN, I have been looking for buying one, but I want to make sure I buy a real one and not a sourvenir....I play QUENA ( flute from the Andes) and It was hard to play...but I am really excited about starting with the DUDUK. Could you please tell me where did you buy yours? Thanks,

  • elГЕЙ89!И здесь армянский член сосёш.Что мне заблакировал,что, правда твои ослинные глаза колят,Если ты мужик,поговорим а если ты пидорь ,то сестрой позноком

  • @elgun89 thousands of years ago Armenians were playing the duduk, there is recorded and documented proof of that. Thousands of years ago the Azeri people, their DNA and by extension any culture associated with them, did not exist.

Back to reality where most of us live, it is, therefore, impossible to "imitate" an instrument from a nation when that nation did not exist for another thousands of so years. Enjoy the music this guy is playing rather than bringing in ur nationalistic claims

  • haha what natio are you ian?

  • Yours is actually pretty good, I bought two in Armenia but they make no close sound to the one in Gladiator.

  • IAN, have you gotten better at it? post up some new videos so we can see you in action bro

  • its really hard to get sound out of that thing, respect dude haha

  • very good, for the first time, except, you cover the hols with the wrong parts of your fingers, you have to cover the holes with the part of your finger that falls between the first and second joint from teh tip of ur finger. watch other videos, pay attention on fingers, you'll see

  • OMG STOP PLEASE !!!

  • you wrong art of music is made to do improvisation and if he want to do this way its nothing wrong about

  • Comment removed

  • Don't let them play "better than thou" on you, it's great you're alive and living, so keep exploring!

  • i think u did quite a good job for first day ;) add oil (means keep it up)dude!

  • Ahh, the dramatic flute sound! Neato.

  • my friend these instrument isnt for you ! !

  • haha that's pretty mean bro.... wow. I've gotten a lot better at it. that was my first day and I didn't know how to play it...u fail

  • i think you did good, just need to train my friend. Thank you for your interest. You need to visite an Armenian, they will teach you, there are many duduk players in California. Just ask some Armenians they will bring you to a professional player who will be more than happy to teach you.

  • Well said, i bet you people would be surprised how much time you have to spend learning an instrument. Just ask a pro how much they have sacrificed. When learning an instrument your greatest enemy is patience and time. Keep it up.

  • Dude don't listen to these negative pricks. Just keep practicing and you'll be great at it. you actually sounded very very good for your first time. It is a really hard intrument to play so it does take a lot of effort to play this. I know a lot of pros that have perffected the DUDUK, and they still practice everyday. Keep it up.

  • Hahaha its Turkish clowns!

Any clever man in this world knows the duduk from Armenia is coming!

The instrument is more than 3000 years old.

And as long there is not the Turks!

Turks since your just dirt from the gypsies have arisen.

  • elgun your the biggest clown in the history of youtube. Seriously join the circus maybe they will listen to your azeri fairy tales and how the first man on mars was mehmed gagarinoglu. lmao xD

  • lmao duduk was introduced to koreans only recently or through the silk road you moron before turks even existed, does duduk even sound korean to you?? lol stupid mongol. haha everything about the duduk is Armenian and every record pre-roman times that indicate to Armenia. That was when you morons were sniffing each others rear ends lol

  • We have a proof that it is our tool!! And at you only propagation and in language of the proof))

  • lmao what proof?? you have no common logic and secondly its not a tool its an insturment and it orgiinates in Armenia. the duduk existed before the word "turk" had a place, so how could the duduk be azeri????? it never was and never will be. Even the greatest duduk players were Armenian. why?? because azeris coudln't even spell DUDUK. stupid animals .lol

  • On Fire xDD \m/_ rock on!

  • Besides the DUDUk originating in ARMENIA, it is made from peach tree, now, I know you AZERI pricks don't have any peach trees in AZERBAFUCK, so I don't know what you're talking about. SHUT UP AND LET THE GUY TELL HIS STORY, ANNASOON TURKI LAMUK.

  • elgun your videos are as usless as you. xD very pointless, narrowminded and ofcourse only made by azeris themselves. ;)

  • The duduk is a form of oboe hand-made almost always of apricot wood, with a 1,500-year history behind it. the duduk is strictly Armenian. Traveling Armenians have taken it to Persia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, the Middle East and as far as the Balkans, where derivatives are played.

  • yes i forgot you created the duduk, lol xD!!!!! thanks proffesor now i know.

  • Oh yeah, apricot, i said peach tree. I was wrong. good job shagenchik jan.

  • The duduk a double reed, also known as ramish or yegheg in Armenian, is typically 9-14 cm. in length and is surrounded by a thin flexible wood binding that slides along the length of the reed. This binding is used for tuning the duduk as it controls the opening/closing of the reed. The reed itself grows plentifully along the Arax River in Armenia

  • I really dont care.

  • hahahahahahahaha elgun your the biggest clown on youtube. yay for azergayjan!!!

  • hahahahaha shagenchik the ancient Armenian historian wishes to inspire all that duduk is Armenian))) hahahahahh

  • Yes duduk was and remains Armenian its under UNESCO and it remains an Ancient Armenian insturment. Don't be jelouse after all its only due to envy that you are here. how pathetic lol xD

  • DUDUK (BALABAN) it is Azerbaijan instrument!

  • Duduk is an Armenian word and it will always be an Armenian instruments Azeris have no insturment only Persian insturments. BTW elgun the first man on mars was azeri. xD!!!!!

  • wtf?? is balaban?? xD hahaha no moron its duduk, its proper Armenian name ;)

  • ты знаешь русский? You speak Russian?

  • why??? not well i can speak a little, can't write or read.

  • And I badly English know the dictionary I use))))))))))))))))

  • get a history book thats what you need and look into old maps.

  • You too go learn Russian and read through Russian documents as they moved you to caucasus! You too require it! ок???))

  • LMAO xD I know Russian documents you moron, find me such proof, the only documents are bullshti azeri documents, haha your such a clown its unbelievable. Stop jumping from one of your worthless theories to another, its so pathetic. its too funny how bad you embarss yourself. hahaha wow.

  • ARA TURK, BALABAN@ tar koxi mort vor@, it's an Armenian instrument.

  • Just because Stalin gave your Nakhichevan and Karabagh during the early Soviet times doesn't make it yours.

  • Its funny how you jump from one subject saying BS how duduk is azeri. haha through you know well its Armenian. Stop stealing our culturalal aspects, you have not culture and you will remaing Mongols. Seriously why are you even here??? haha just to embarss yourself. Eldun didn't you already make yourself look like a clown??

  • and yes turkic=mongol. get a history check. elgun stop being such a prick that you are and check true history not azeri bullshit sites, its so pathetic what you azeris say, keep embarssing yourself azer.

  • Tell me why you make up 10 different stories on Armenian history?? you can't change history, the culture and instruments such as duduk have always been part of Armenia and will remain.

  • You do not know history!!!! Uselessly with you to communicate

  • lmao i don't know history?? more than you do thats for sure, the problem is can you afford a mirror??? plese if you can take a look at it xD your such an azeri clown. Go read your azeri propoganda books maybe it will tell you that the first man on Mars was an Azeri too. xD lol

  • elgun please communication with your is like communication with a rock. Yet i belive its less pointless talking to a rock than you,. lol MONGOL!!

  • Their grandfathers have inspired them that type duduk is Armenian! But it not so!! To Armenians and to a head would not come such that there is on the ground such tool!-Armenians go study the history! Or you have forgotten that have moved you from the different countries on territory of Azerbaijan in 18 century?? Azeri-turkiс live on caucasus 2000 and you 300 years!

  • people of the world nobody cares about Azerbaidjan, xD Djivan Gasparyan is the greatest duduk player in the world. ofcourse from Armenia. The word "balaban" is a fake azerified/turkified name for the Armenian duduk. Secondly Armenia dates back 3,000 years as opposed to azerbaidjan which didn't become a nation only until 1918.

  • Elgun tell me why Roman records don't indicate to any nation such as Azerbaidjan,?? its funny how your azers don't even know your own history. LMAO azeris were sniffing each others bottoms in Mongolia when Armenia was in the caucusus,. Under Tigran the Great the Armenian duduk was being played. The duduk was first introduced into the Ottomon empire from Armenia in the 16th century, When azerbaidjan didn't even have a place on the map. xD

  • Armenians in 4 century B.C. have moved from Balkan peninsula on territory of today's Turkey!

  • elgun now your telling me a different story?? what is this??? elgun you don't even know your own history, how dare you change the history of Armenia??? Armenia has been a nation for over three thousand years. Armenia was called Urartu aka Arartia. The Assyrian, Hebrew name for Armenia then it was changed into Armenia by the Romans which Armenia was under the Armenian Orontid dynasty. Get a history check.

  • It to you was inspired by your historians but there was no such history at you!!! Mongols it NOT turkis remember! They have grasped caucasus and destroyed turkis both in Asia and on caucasus!

  • your truly retarded, firstly there was no such thing as Turks in Caucusus, Get educated you lack the most common sense, and its not our historians but any historian or any map will indicate that the word "turk" did not exist. It came into Caucusus through Mongols. 100 percent Mongols, and especially azerbaidjan which didn't exist, Caucuses was formed by Armenia, Greece(byzantium), PErsia, and Iberia(Georgia).

  • elgun my grandfathers are dead, secondly its not our historians its your historians who make you confuesed because they have no back up to their saying and they only do it based on Anti-Armenian propoganda. Any historian will tell you there was no such thing as turks only until the first turkic tribes from Mongolia came in.

  • haha elgun is the first man in space Azeri too?? his name is probably mehmed gagarinoglu. xD hey azer clown you have and never had history other than the fact that you are from Mongolia. Keep youe jeolousy to yourself and get educated. THe whole world knows the records of the duduk which is a christian instrument and everything points to Armenia. Azerbaidjan didn't exist at all and still is a fake "country".

  • We not Mongols and not Turks we azeri-turkis! And you descendants of kurds and assyrians are not present such nation as Armenians! Words Armenia this Greek names!

  • Azeris have caucasian in them, but they are still turkic tribes formed by Persian influence. your Mongols by blood, even your DNA will be closer to a mongol then anyone else here. Even Turks from Turkey are whiter because they mixed with some Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Serbians, etc

  • Go look up Turkic tribes and check where they originate do you know where????? YES MONGOLIA!!!
