IF you want to give someone stockholm syndrome, constant isolation would be required. We're social animals and isolation screws with the mind.

We can't be sure if they are doing the other things (threat of death/harm mixed with occasional kindness)but it sounds similar to what happened to Padilla, who was accusing his lawyer of being too hard on George Bush at his trial

They can make manning unable to defend himself by the time of the trial & then say "See, he got his trial!"

The piece in firedoglake is important and so is today's (12/23/10) article by Glenn Greenwald in salon. The UN Special Rapporteur is going to investigate as well. It seems clear that, as Assange said, Manning is a political prisoner. Obama's about to sign, or has already signed, an executive order regarding "indefinite detention."
