@fulleffect29 I would say HDH's magical production, The Funk Brothers awesome backing, Flo and Mary's soaring vocals made this song magical. Diana's voice just tops it off. The Supremes+ HDH+The Funk Brothers = MAGIC!!
I think that Diana was the natural choice for singing lead most of the time (though Mary and Flo should have been given more album cuts and b-sides), but it was the whole package of lead plus backing vocals that was magic.in these records.
That was lost when Mary and Flo were replaced in the studio by the Andantes (who were very good studio background singers but they were too anonymous) and I find the Diana Ross and the Supremes recordings to be mostly pretty forgettable.
Reading these messages is like stepping into another dimension. These are good backup singers, but reading these messages, you would think it was much much more than that. I love Mary and Florence, too, but you need to keep at least one foot in reality. Even Mary and Flo said Diana's voice sold the records (for which they, of course, got paid).
@kenhamlett1 See? Why must you diminish Flo and Mary's role in The Supremes songs? Diana's voice was a CRUCIAL part of these songs, but to say that Diana and ANYONE on background would have been a success anyways...is a GROSS EXAGERATION, and proof of that is how their songs after Flo left (with The Andantes) weren't such hits as the ORIGINAL Supremes blend of voices...they were MAGIC as a unit!!!
@rioboy13 I agree...listen to Flo and Mary....Flo gives that song that certain something it is called MAGIC as you stated !! As a kid I saw them back in the 60's .When Flo "left" there was something missing .
@kenhamlett1 Well technically it was HDH that sold the records as THEY WROTE THEM. But yeah Diana' voice had the cross over appeal Berry was looking for. I hate it when people say "Florence sounded like a million other girls" Because she didn't. Aretha has a big soulful voice. So did Florence but she could hit and maintain the high soprano notes like no other!
Actually idaslpdhr, I got new the Supremes bio for Xmas, and she WAS originally Diane, not Diana. Also, it's "you're" not your", and your second sentence should be split by a full stop after Diana. "Get it right...."
@TC6759 I Understand, lol,, Thank God for these Special People That Are Posting these Wonderful mixes. I Wish Motown would stop being so afraid to take chances & release mixes like these.
Too much instrumental and not enough of the three powerful voices. I have no problem with Dianna leading the supremes. I just wish that flo and Mary had been given more meaningful roles. Perhaps the group would have stayed together longer and maybe Flo's tragedy could have been averted or delayed. Maybe, Maybe, Maybe.... Sigh
Isn't it a breath of fresh air to be able to hear the legendary Supremes WITHOUT Diane? When people try to tell you that Diane WAS the Supremes, you can play this version and show them how much she WASN'T! I love it! They should have releases this version in 1965.......it would have probably still gone to number 1!

This sucks this is one instrumnetal when DIANA ROSS is needed...and quick. Call Mr. Gordy the inmates are running the asylum. On a real note I love the original Supremes but I've heard the Flo Ballard solo work from Motown & ABC records she was a great background singer but her voice wasn't like Aretha,Gladys or Etta James as Mary Wilson loves to throw out in interviews. Everyone is not meant to be a lead singer and this version needs Diana or even Smokey at the least. Star quality!!!
@babyluvchild Hi, I'm a Florence Fan. Listen to "Forever Faithful" and "Like you babe" THAT was the real Florence. ABC lost interest when they discovered they couldn't exploit her Supremes past. And so, as a result her album did very very badly. But you've gotta admit, there are a few good gems in that bag.
I love how you can tell when people buy the story Mary Wilson is selling now. They call Ms. Ross Diane, as Mary is always does. It's rude and classless, but then not so surprising.
Actually, Diana's close friends and family usually called her Diane. In fact I have posted a radio advertisement done by The Supremes in 1962/63 in which Diana introduces herself as Diane
@idaslpdhr Well, as much as I ADORE The Supremes...LET'S FACE IT...Mary's version of their story was DESIGNED to sell books, so it's VERY "DISHY" so don't take everything she says for face value...remember, she's STILL MILKING The Supremes Legacy TO THE VERY LAST DROP, cause as much as I love her (WITH THE SUPREMES) I wouldn't want a cd of hers as a soloist. Honest!
Who the hell needs Diana? With such briliant backing I can handle this one (LOL).Like all of you ain't already half way through the song. (LMAO) but give it up. THIS ONE"S MINE !!
i have been wondering for years what they were saying and now i finally know. its good to hear Flo singing without Diana's voice even though i like all 3 of the girls for different reasons.
OH...Now see... This is the way the Supremes should have been... My girls Florence & Mary singing with those awesome voices... I NEVER could get with the "whiney" baby lead- (No offense, Diana- I just couldn't feel you, Girl.) Florence had an AWESOME voice and Mary was jazzy and soulful. Thank you for sharing this... I'd like to hear more Supremes backgrounds minus the "lead".
I think they should have had Flo nearer to the mic on songs where Mary and Flo did the exact same backing - especially like this where it goes higher as Flo (being a high soprano) is much better suited to powering out on the higher notes
I love this. It's given me a new appreciation for the Funk Bros. Can you also do the same (remove Ross) with A Lover's Concerto on this album, if possible, please?
Thanks for posting - lovely to be able to hear The Funk Bother's brilliant instrumentation along with Mary and Flo's strong backing on this track clearly
They sound great...however, Diana's voice made this song MAGICALLY and another number 1 of their 12!!!

There is no third voice added here. It is only Flo and maryM At 1:30 both girls beguin to sing higher on "symphony." It's not a whole octave, either.
