@blinkzone Where did you hear that phrase? This video cuts off that part of the scene (crowds chanting "the whole world is watching...", and Nixon's plans to bomb Cambodia.) The editing between that speech and the followup is quite good and a shame it was left out of this video.
Oliver Stone at his best. The editing and use of archive footage is brilliant.
It should be noted, if it hasn't been already, that this is actually three different speeches (or more) edited together. But it does a great job of showing how and why Nixon won in 1968 - he was able to convince Americans that he was the man to unite the country after a decade of horrible strife.
Your really going to compare these two as the same. 1. Did Nixon start the war in Vietnam no it was Kennedy. 2. Nixon ended the war in Vietnam Bush started the war. Nixon probrably had a bigger effect when doing policy then Bush did.

lead the usa at a very hard time in its history. the very late 1960s to the end of 1970s was a bad time not just for usa but for much of the world its easy to be seen as good leader in good times but in bad times people blame you no matter what you do. like here in england every one is hateing gordon brown but tony blair is just as guilty for the troubles we have now but he got out befor it when bad so onone assosiates him with it so much.
Did you know Nixon's mother (a devout quaker) used to read the bible to him everyday and one day after coming home from school she read him a story about Israel and then told him 'ONE DAY RICHARD YOU WILL HELP SAVE THE JEWS!' and that is exactly what happened - You can look it up in a documentary: AGAINST ALL ODDS - PRODUCER - Bill
Richard Nixon was FAR from perfect and had MANY flaws. However, that does not erase the fact that he was a realist and lead the country with facts instead of "from his gut".
I shudder to think what type of America I would have been born in IF Richard Nixon had not been elected in '68.
Far from perfect, but FAR better than the possible alternatives.
We sure could use him now at this terrible and tragic juncture in this nations final approach to disgrace. He was not perfect, but he was a great president who did somthing, by comparason could be considered minor to what goes on in the rest of the world.
I would never compare Nixon to Bush. Nixon actually had to work for a living at one point before his political career, and he had to work to get his presidency and didn't have it handed to him because of who his dad was.
It's a wonderful speech. The music with it is very inspiring. This is one of my favourite move scenes. It gives you goose bumps! I remember there were some pretty good speeches in the 2004 Republican convention too. I loved Zell Miller's speech - very old school. I think Nixon had a role in helping to defeat a possible Communist revolution in America. They tried, but couldn't - Too much common sense in America. Instead, we got the NEW AMERICAN REVOLUTION!
you know what. you are right. People have no idea how close we were to having a communist revolution here in the states. PPl. said oh its the young generation. Well, later ppl. learned that it was the communist party in Chicago 1968 giving the orders to the so called chicago 8 or whatever. the communists were behind a lot of the civil unrest in this country. But Nixon got em. and they hated him for it. Sure he was a control freak. but what if he wasn't. what else besides watergate in the 70s
Andrew is just full of hate. The war was expanded into Cambodia because the enemy was there. Maybe instead of reading so many foreign newspapers, you should read books on military strategy or at the very least some on common sense. I hear Ben Franklin has a new one out. Douche.

For those praising Nixon, ask the Cambodians what they suffered under his regime, or the Chileans who saw their elected government overthrown by Nixon and replaced with Augusto Pinochet.
The number of Cambodians killed by Nixon is a drop of water in comparison to the ocean of people killed by Pol Pot. The Chileans eventually had their democracy restored. The Chilean economy is the fastest growing in all of Latin American countries thanks to Milton Freidman.
Actually the Chilean economy collapsed dramatically under Pinochet. The World Bank had to come save the day. And our assault on Cambodia is what allowed the Pol Pot militias to gain strength and take power. Chile only had it's democracy restored after the U.S. stopped backing the dictator Pinochet.
Idiotic jabs against Reagan aside, I do believe that Nixon was one of the martyrs of this country. All of the things he did, from the EPA to OSHA, from price controls against the energy crisis to the most effective attempt to revitalize social security, and opening borders with China, are all eclipsed because of a hotel, and two reporters desperate for fame. If you hadn't noticed, Woodward and Bernstein haven't stopped their yellow journalism since.
Yes, it worked so well the Salvadoran guerrillas are now immensely popular as a political party and are prepared to win the presidency in 2009 through the vote, while maintaining their Marxist ideals. Americans need to read some foreign newspapers once in a while.

Barack Obama is this generations Nixon.
He is EXACTLY in the same place Richard Nixon was when elected. An outsider, not trusted.
Nixon showed us that an outsider can sometimes be the perfect solution to problems created by "Insiders".

I hope Obama can be another Nixon. I feel he cannot. John McCain never would have been another Nixon, that is for sure.

In the new Oliver Stone movie on Bush, Bush calls the War HIS WAR.
