  • @KodyBoy555 This is no coincidence. The synth chip in the Genesis was also a Yamaha-designed FM synthesizer! :) Good ear!

  • I bought a mint one for $150 in a pawn shop, they thought it didn't work because the presets names were all scrambled and they sounded terrible (if at all), I just replaced the battery and loaded some patches, works like new now.

  • This sounds so sexy!

  • what was the second song you played

  • chick corea :)

  • Out of curiosity, can you post settings for this sound? I have an SY77, but my FM E. Piano sound is off. Mine has an annoying extra major 3rd tone in the lower octaves.

  • @KodyBoy555 Understandable. The Genesis uses a Yamaha-built FM synthesizer chip for its sound.

  • FAKE !!!! the control of volume is turned down.

  • @SuaveGanimedes Well, sort of, but not exactly. This DX7 is MIDI'ed to TX7 module, which is basically the same thing as the DX7. So, it's more real than a soft synth :)

  • @dvamateur Sounds like you were uselessly insulted, my man! But it's no big deal, I know you are using a true sound and that man is ignorant. :)

  • @SuaveGanimedes OWNED !!!!!!

  • Nice !

and may I ask you something? how can I use my DX7 as a master midi keyboard? I tried to connect it to my mac but the midi date seems doesn't send. How can I set up? thank you so much!

  • @minimoogeryanlo If you have the old DX7 (mk1) I don't recommend to use it as a master keyboard, because it sends only velocity data from 0 to 100. DX7II is better with its 0-127 range. Nonetheless, you need to connect your MIDI out of your DX7 to MIDI in of your Mac MIDI interface, and set the same MIDI channel on both the DX7 and your Mac. (There are 16 MIDI channels, and they have to be the same on both devices to communicate).

  • I didn't realize I was watching the great dvamateur's video when I clicked this from "Videos you might like" xD Heyyy!!! I think you sound fabulous! Mister GENIUS! Ha!

  • Dear Santa...

  • Dv...I used a DX/TX7 combo when I played on the road. I sold both and bought a DX5.

  • Nice love the bass sounds

  • in the 80's i wanted one but were too expensive....now i still want one...but guess what?...today they are even more expensive and that's if you can find one

  • @wrabit79 Bought mine for 350€, so... you just have to dig a little.

  • Hola busco un yamaha dx7 IId tel movistar (045) 8117 19 34 18 mty, n.l.

  • I listen a lot to Chick Corea since I watched your best-I-could-do attempt of Got a Match.

  • This is a piano number 5???

  • @Joseribeiromarques In fact, it is factory program #5 on the TX7 module. Slightly different than the one on the DX7 factory set.

  • 0:33 epiano do you know where I can find such a plugin for my Logic? All I found is 4Front e piano but it's free and not bery nice? tx

  • hey i was wonderin do we need disc to save patch on yamaha dx7? im lookin forward to buy it, but im not sure they're sellin the disc included? please reply. thanks! nice vid

  • How it posible we hear a sound when dx7 volume slider is on low position?

  • @bosmanboss Well, good catch! What you hear is a TX7 module. My DX7 keyboard distorts a bit on its operators, so I used the TX7 sounds, which is better shape sonically than my DX7.

  • @dvamateur Hehe thnx. I was just wondering why your dx7 sound so nicely because my also somehow distorts slightly. I think that's a problem with any of the operational amplifiers in the preamplifier.

  • @dvamateur: I Bought a DX7 partly because of this video ;)The factory set and the 2 cartridges that I got with it dont sound as good as yours does. There are only a few usable sounds on mine. Are there soundcartridges to buy or?

  • @wlripper For the DX7 the way to get sounds is to download them from the internet as sysex files. When it comes to this video, the sounds actually come from the TX7 module. These particular pianos in this video are factory sounds from the TX7. The DX7 factory sounds are a bit different.

  • I still own this keyboard (with the original battery yet!). A great transition from analog to digital in 1983.

  • @lars1957 Probably worth looking at changing the battery sometime soon then. I don't know how Yamaha mounted them in DX7's but alot of synths are ruined by batteries spliting and the acid messing up the circuitry.

I changed my Juno-60, JX-3P & ASQ10 batteries a couple of months ago and now I can sleep at night safe in the knowledge they wont need my attention for at least another 5-10 years.

  • The first 30 seconds of this vid give me goosebumps. I lack your creativity. I share your passion for keyboards - oh but that first 30 seconds...........................

  • Anyone knows a good vsti which contain those exact DX7 sort of vintage sounds ? Thanks!

  • @heavenbaby06 That would probably be the Native Instruments FM8. Although I'd stay away from a modern PC as far as possible due to the cheesiness factor :) I just ordered myself a Macintosh Classic on eBay, together with original Mark of the Unicorn Performer.

  • @dvamateur why cheesiness? am I the only one who tinks the Mac OS X is terrible, how can people use that..

  • Nice hands! Do all youtube keyboard players wear shorts?

  • @decozac59 I guess from the comfort of the home as opposed to a studio...

  • I miss my DX7!

  • @KodyBoy555 :

The megadrive sound chipset is the Yamaha YM2612 FM!!

That's why the sound is very similar :)

  • @KodyBoy555 Never touched Sega in my life, but if what you're saying is the case, then I didn't miss anything...

  • @KodyBoy555 Ha ha... Never had a pleasure to play Sega, but I used to play stolen Atari games back in the heyday...

  • Is this factory TX7 sysex compatible with Sonar? How about Kontakt 4? Also, I could be wrong, but isn't a sysex file just the data, and not the actual instrument sounds? I'm so confused!

  • Pretty interesting EPs. Digital Synthesis is pretty versatile, isn't it

  • great sounds

  • Hey you have the same watch as me. ?????????

  • I could be wrong, but I believe the second sound you featured on this video is the one that Babyface plays in his music. Is there anywhere I could rent a keyboard of this model? Which one did this sound come from?

  • @MsAussie83 These sounds come from the Yamaha TX7 factory set. These sounds are 100% compatible with the FM8 soft synth as well as the DX7 keyboard. So, there's no need to rent a keyboard. Just get the FM8 and load the factory TX7 sysex into it, which can be found on the Internet for free.

  • Nice playing foo...

  • what cartdridge is those pianos on...? I recently bought a Dx7 and the pianos aint there. Thats the reason I bought it...Thank u...u play awesome

  • @jgveneno These sounds are actually coming out of a TX7 expander module. These are factory sounds of the TX7, which are a little different than the DX7 factory sounds.

  • nice el piano on dx7 mark 1:)) i have one too with e matter grey card , works fine is from 1983.

  • sound beautiful.

  • @he214ab Indeed, the TX7 module sounds beautiful. Now, I wish I could play something coherent on it.

  • I think for the "Got A Match" sound Chick used was a combination of the Electric Piano sound along with a slight brassy tone to give it a little more bite. I believe he was using a bank of TX816s with his rig at first. Nice demo. I have a DX7II and while I really only like the "FullTines" Int 5 patch, it has a wonderful feel to the action and has become a favorite controller in my studio.

  • @benanderson88 Good catch! I even did notice that myself. The sound is actually coming out of a TX7 expander. The reason for that is that my DX7's oscillators seem to produce a bit of distortion, which means that they may be slowly giving way...

  • Love Chick Corea....Did a good job at this one...Well done

  • @scott93257 Thanks for kind words, but I can't really listen to myself playing this. Chick Corea technique is brilliant!

  • @dvamateur His technique is fabulous. Wish I had technique like that. But I think you did a good job at the tune. I know how hard the tune is because of its original speed. I never saw Corea do it on anything with weighted keys, always the Yamaha KX5 (and even he hits bumnotes…).

  • After watching your amazing playing and programming, it makes me feel like shit and want to give up and go back to my first love...guitar. Nah, the DX7 is just too damn musical and fun to "get lost" in, which is one thing I am very good at right now. Great posts!

  • nice to hear chick corea in there man :)

  • @rantarave Thanks for a nice comment. Chick Corea rules! My dream is to have the musical knowledge and technique like Chick Corea.

  • Could someone please answer this question, i want to buy a yamaha dx9 on ebay but the seller says that is needs a new ROM battery to store information. What does that mean? Does it just need a batter to store information or to power it up overall? Could someone please answer asap!

  • @1Mhpouy A new internal battery is no problem. You can get a 3-pack in Radio Shack for 10 bucks. The battery is called CR-2032. Most instruments use it in order to preserve RAM memory when the instrument is turned off. Since the DX7/DX9 don't have ROM sounds, all sounds are volatile in RAM, so if the battery goes the sounds go. You need two more tings. Soldering iron, and a computer with MIDI interface to load the original sounds to the DX9 on the internet using a free MIDI SysEx utility.

  • ok so im lost sorry, so then if the dx9 needs a new rom battery to store information is it just to sotre information or to power up the board?

  • What attracts me to the DX7 is its design which I got used to, as I studied Yamaha catalogs when I was 10 years old, and that's exactly the instrument aesthetics that appeal to me. In other words, this is the look I associate with the word synthesizer (the same way as I like and got used to the 1954 Fender Stratocaster design). In addition, I find the sine waves, and some of the mellow elec piano sound built on the sine waves, I find them very playable, expressive, and soothing.

  • I couldn't agree with you more! I always knew that I was attracted to my DX100, then DX21 and now DX11 and being an architectural student and always going through my STACKS of collected brochures perving and drooling over their sleek minimalistic designs, made me come to the conclusion that that's the reason Roland will never be quite as appealing....although I have a XP-50 and a Fantom X-6. Yamaha is like the MercedesBenz when it comes to looks.

  • @kalletjie Well, these days most poeple diss the DX series synths, and all 80's keyboard by saying that they look like cheap calculators. Not to me, to me these were the most beautifully designed electronic keyboard instruments. Also, in the 80's Mercedes-Benz was one of my favorite brand because of the design (not anymore these days), and of course I love the Testarossa, Honda CBX motorcycle (that very early '80s) Lotus Esprit, all these things were just absolutely gorgeous.

  • If you like DX7, check out my song Zajecar II (it's in my videos). It's all DX7 anf Boss ME-5

  • hey i'm planning on buying a 2nd hand DX7 can someone tell me if i should be happy by the moment i have it?

  • @ArticHound DX7's seem plentiful these days on eBay, but it's not easy to find one in a good condition. The in this video, is in a decent cosmetic condition, and also all the buttons and keys work, including aftertouch. However, the oscrillators have noticeable hiss and distortion due to the age of the instrument (mine is 1986 model), hence I am hooking it up to the TX7 tone module for the sound, and that's what you hear on this video. Will you like it? Hard to say. It's acquired taste.

  • Beautiful!

  • Very nice sounds, very good playing (compared to me) and very a great synth :) I have got a DX7, too, but the II-FD version. Can you please send me the first patch you used in the video? Dzuekuje :) Greetings from Slovakia

  • What you hear is actually a factory TX7 set (yes, TX7, not DX7). I use the TX7, becuase my DX7 produces some distortion, maybe due to the age of the instrument. If you want the sounds from this video, download the TX7 factory sysex set. I happen to have the II-FD as well, as well as the 4-op V50. My DX7IIFD is quite hissy though, and the V50 has no internal battery. I think my favorites are the DX7IID and DX7s. And I absolutely love the Roland D50. Oh, and say hi to Martin Valihora!

  • I must ask, is there any difference, in terms of presets, between the DX7 and DX7IID/FD? Are the default voices any different between the two?

  • @JohnnyMidnight1 I don't know, I am not a DX expert, because when the DX series was seveloping, I was 10 years old, and I could not afford to buy it. Now, after 25+ years, I finally bought the DX7 and DX7IIFD. The presets that I got the DX7 with were modified, but the DX7IIFD I think had the original presets. Now, when I downloaded the factory DX7 mk1 sysex, the sounds were quite different from those on DX7II. There were some different sounds, and their order was totally different.

  • ah thanks... never mind anyway, I'm getting a Roland JX-8P and running DX7 preset sounds thru FM8 via a MIDI cable :p

  • que onda vale nacesitemos uno que toque el teclado o quiero acharle ganas o tengo los contactos para er famos ahcame un cable primo

  • Beautyfull watch, this is Swatch Irony Chrono?

  • Dziekuje, ale to nie Swatch, tylko Seiko. Swatch pewnie znacznie drozszy.

Seiko też wymiata, to dobre zegarki. Trzymaj się!;)

  • yyyy...chyba jednak nie jesteś Polakiem.....

  • Dlaczego nie?

  • a jesteś?

  • Can I ask what are the two things behind the DX7. Midi controllers?

  • By all means thanks for asking. These are Sony MDM-X4 MiniDisc multitrack recorders. The Mk I and Mk II versions.

  • awesome playin'

what's the name of the first piece

  • Thank you for kind comment. The first thing is not a piece really, just and F chord, then G chord, then D-minor, then Elton John style transition from A-minor to E Major from Tiny Dancer I think. Sorry, but I don't know that much music to play.

  • Fantastic, lovely way to touch keys, really nice play!!!

I like a lot this video!

    *****

    Pippo

  • Thanks man. I can't get any near your speed of playing Got a Match. That's the best I could do. The way you play it sounds like Chick Corea.

  • Thanks to you! I'm not so able....only fast...i go out of tempo :( and have not a nice touch like yours!!

    Compliment
