  • this is my shit

  • Moz is talking about my life in this song...

  • What this band brought to the table never should have worked... fairly monotonous melodies, droning vocals, supremely self-pitying lyrics... And, to be fair, when they missed, they missed big. But when they hit, which was usually, they were the best.

  • The Smiths rip

  • But I don´t wanna lover I just want to be tieeeed, ohh.....

    In the back of......yoouuuuur caaar....

In the back of your car, in the back of your car...

  • REUNION TOUR 2012!!!!

  • Beautiful work as always. This song has a certain addictive quality, probably because of the resolution of the chorus. Awesome.

  • absolute cult

  • Johnny Marrs choice of chords are so fuckin' sweet, a mix of folk and neon purple...fizz.

  • it reminds me of Murakami's book called "Dance, Dance, Dance"

  • one the smiths greatest songs, captures that early urgency and the motown rhythmn on the guitar is pure genius

  • Sweet song Wicked Band!

  • 'No, I've never had a job because I've never wanted one. I've seen you smile but I've never really heard you laugh so who is rich and who is poor? I cannot say...'

  • Splendida! awesome!

  • Sorry to be a pedant, but this is the version from The Smiths (debut album), not the Hatful of Hollow version, which is much slower.

I hate people like me, by the way.

  • @jdbchandler plus morrissey sings this version far more flamboyantly especially at the start i love this version!

  • That guitar stuff...... what the fuck is that, anyway?

  • @jrod112 same here. Ive been feeling that way for quite a while now. especially the walking part. that's the only thing i can do. that and stay alone in my room and house doing nothing. i relate to Morrissey a whole lot too. when i hear his lyrics it seems he's like describing me and my life. I think that a majority of smiths fans feel the same way i do.

  • A friendship sadly lost? well, this is true and yet, it's false but did I ever tell you, by the way I never did like your face But you've got everything now you've got everything now and what a terrible mess I've made of my life oh what a mess I've made of my life No, I've never had a job because I'm too shy I've seen you smile but I've never really heard you laugh so who is rich and who is poor? I cannot say...
  • You know how amazing the Smiths are when the comments on the videos are real sentences.

  • @ValjeanMorrissey diss ma joynt s0n

  • @ValjeanMorrissey Nigga 4 reellzzz. People so articulate here.

  • Back at the old grey school I was winning. You'd lose

  • But did I ever tell you, by the way ? I never did like your face

  • I've seen you smile but I've never really heard you laugh

  • ''They must never have been shit....or you'd have heard of it, wouldn't've you?''

  • ''They've never been shit...have they?''

  • I was just thinking today how "Strangeways" is their best album.....but now, thinking about this song, and "Reel Around the Fountain", "Miserable Lie", "Pretty Girls", I think I'm going to have to say the first one's the best...wait, then there's "The Queen is Dead"....did they ever make anything that didn't completely rule the world?

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds I can never make my mind up on my favourite album because as soon as I start listening to one album it becomes my favourite until I listen to another one. Some crazy vicious circle shit.

  • In my time; I've heard good songs, I've heard bad songs, I've heard ugly songs and I've heard Justin Bieber. This is my favourite song of all time. And that is no mean feat by those standards.

  • The Stone Roses and The Smiths are my life!

  • the smiths are just awesome! just qhen i think i've heard all of their best songs i hear this masterpiece, seriosly now i wanna cry of joy

THE SMITHS, BRAVO! you gave me a reason to live!

  • great lyrics, this suits todays mood

  • describes my life.................great track

  • I'm so into this song right now, so sad... I don't want a lover, I just want to be seen in the back of her car ... This one is for me, thanks Mozza.

  • @MirageMC

I always loved the final offering of lyrics in this song! "But I don't want a lover,

I just want to be tied to the back of your caaaaaar" Incredible!

  • A bottle Of Jack's a Pack A cigg's and this song and i'm set.. Memories of an old flame of mine..

  • Im truely amazed with the smiths, i feel like there the voice i wanted to express all this time but couldnt......besides the cure THEY ARE THE BEST FUCKING BAND from the 80s

  • as merry as the days were long! i was right and you were wrong :D

  • personally my favourite smiths tune. beautiful.

  • this is one of my favorite and I think most underrated songs. It should be up there with still ill. It is actually better contructed and is more dynamic.

  • I love how the lyrics don't really rhyme they just flow.

  • oh what a mess I've made of my life! I tell myself the same every day

  • love The Smiths :)

  • You know, about 2/3 of The Smiths would probably be considered Rockabilly, the rest good Irish style drinking/sorrow songs, and a minute bit just sugary poppy sweet. I love it all.

  • One of their best songs! There are no words to describe how amazing it is, the ending is magnificent!

  • i think i might like the smiths too much...

  • @gak823 same problem, here...

  • @gak823 Don't worry. You're not alone.

  • @gak823 I think we all do

  • @gak823 thats not a bad thing

  • @gak823 i only thumbed down this because that's impossible!

  • @gak823 impossible!

  • @gak823 same goes for me i'd never seen my mum so pissed as the day i came home at the age of seventeen with a purple mouth (too much red wine) and a "the smiths" tattoo'd on my chest

  • @gak823 IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!

  • @gak823 even too much isn't enough

  • @gak823 that's never possible

  • @gak823 uh, you can never like The Smiths too much!

    :D

  • @gak823 excuse me?

  • karin smith likes this too much also and shes triumphant depressing lyrics too and thank f#ckin goodness for Karin and Morrissey both :]

  • @gak823 Same here bud

  • Comment removed

  • @gak823

One can never "like" the Smiths too. If anything one should probably never "relate" to the Smiths too much. Already enough suicides happening in the world.

  • Comment removed

  • @TransmissionFilms Funny that you say that because I've always thought of Morrissey as one of the very few people that I could probably relate to almost completely. I guess that's bad... in a way... Idk. Fuck it.

  • @jrod1112

Well I actually feel the same way. I remember reading an interview Morrisey made during the 80s. He mainly talked about how he was lonely, too shy, and depressed. So much of the Smiths/Morrisey songs are exactly about that; depression, loneliness, sexuality, unrequited love, shyness, fear, death, suicide and on and on. I relate to many of those songs. Morrisey just has such a way with words; and the instruments and vocals are go along so well!

  • @TransmissionFilms Yeah, dude. I hear ya. He said that he had no social life whatsoever, and that the only release that he ever got was from walking by himself around his neighborhood reflecting/thinking. I remember my highschool life was basically the same exact thing including the walking part. Morrissey's life parallels mine in so many ways. I could probably never amount to a fraction of his creative genius genius/style/awesomeness, but at least I can write some clever poems. Such is life.

  • @gak823 there's no such thing as liking the smiths too much.

  • @gak823 I know the feeling all too well

  • @gak823 not posible

  • i never really liked your face...

LOVE THE SMITHS!! Amazing band. I identify so much with Morrissey's lyrics.

  • no I never had a job, because I never wanted one,

  • @tinyrebellion I find that brilliant, but my parent's dont when I try to tell them...

  • @tinyrebellion

    I've seen you smile.

But I've never really herd you laugh

  • @tinyrebellion story of my life

  • @aldude333 same! Ive only ever had one job and frankly (mr. shankley) that went tits up! It was horrible! If I was old enough to go on the dole I dont think I'd bother...

  • brilliant band and brilliant songs. I always had a problem with the way the 1st album was produced, layered. its lost something for me, the hatful of hollow that contains peel sessions and such like sounded so much better, more if a live sound, raw. the way it should be

  • great band. every song has uplifting riffs and depressing lyrics kind of balance eachother out

  • So true, that's the genious of it. Other artists has this glorious combination as well, Elliott Smith for example. Life has two sides struggling - so has the songs. An excellent mirror. :)

  • @frenchielcfc Obviously you are trying to express your obvious love of The Smiths, but after spending 27 years of my life defending the lyrics of The Smiths as being anything but depressing, i find it really sad to see a fan do just that. Their lyrics are inspiring and joyous, anything but depressing.

  • @mrellio idk i feel that when u listen to The Smiths watever mood ur in is blown to a huge porportion whether that be happy or depressing. thats why i love The Smiths every song just furthers on my emotions

  • @mrellio

Maybe some songs' lyrics are joyous, but there are sooooo many that aren't.

  • @frenchielcfc

these aren't depressing lyrics at all, they are triumphant

  • @frenchielcfc most, yes....leichester city fc? go gunners, haha...suffer little children, back to the old house, reeel around the fountain come to mind lol

  • @frenchielcfc That's the 80's for you. I don't know if you like foreign music much, but one child of this fashion is The Pillows. Most of their music is in Japanese, but albums like Smile, Little Busters, and Another Morning, Another Pillows are freakin' iconic.

    Oh yeah, The Smiths!!! Woot!!!

I heard This Charming Man once and went out and bought their self titled album the next day, No lie.

Great skate music if you're into longboards.

  • just from my opinion but no matter what smiths song, you can put it into a skate video and it will make the video sooo sooo much better since the smiths are so fucking great

  • Would you put I know its over in the vid?

  • nah lol man i mean the more bright and poppy smiths songs like there is a light that never goes out would go good with simple style skating

  • by far and large the greatest, ever, lyricsist

  • Morrissey's falsetto in the end makes this song for me. Marr's guitar jangle is sooo underrated. He makes the complex sound so simple. As good as Roger McGuinn anyday.

  • them boys got the blues

  • i really love The smiths, for 20 years.

  • every note of this song and the album for that matter reminds me of my teens.. it was perfect for those times where love was so much easier to find and where emotions so easliy got the upper hand in any relationship.. i love the sound and the lyrics of the smiths.. always and forever.

  • you are your mother only son..and you are deperate one...

  • the first couple lines of this song reminds me of "Bang Bang" from Nancy Sinatra

  • @sneakerheadforlife she's good friend of morrissey

  • Comment removed

  • oh what a mess ive made of my life :( . i know this sounds ficking pathetic but if it werent for morrisseys lyrics then fucknows where id bee. it makes you feel abit better wen u know sum1 else felt as misareble as u do

  • esta version es la mejor

  • Oh, story of my life.

    Te amo Moz. . .

    :]

  • Comment removed

  • is a bit stupid that people have give the thumbs down JUST because they don't agree. he's just stating an opinion.

  • so who is rich and who is poor, i cannot say

  • c sharp actually cos hes up a tone

  • love that b chord variant he plays at 1;46...like brian wilson he seemed to 'invent' chords that were perfect, brilliant band, fabby song.

  • It's funny how every single Smiths song is great in some way. For an example, first I was in love with Some Girls Are Bigger... and thought that There Is a Light... was irritating. But I learned to love it more than any other Smiths song. And now I find myself listening to their debut album and falling in love with every single song, even those ones that I first didn't care about...

  • ive never had a job because ive never wanted one! well said mozza

  • this version is twenty times better than hatfull of hollow version. the one on hatfull of hollow has not got the feel that this versions got. this jumps out and grabs your attention more

  • also the live version i have has some changed up lyrics.

  • i somehow ended up with a gritty cool live version of this song and i love it.

  • I've been listening to this album non-stop!!

  • Bloody hell, I've never heard this one before but it's fucking amazing! They never cease to surprise me this band.

  • I have all thier albums on vinyl it's nice.

  • As merry as the days were long

I was right and you were wrong

Back at the old grey school

I would win and you would lose

    You've got everything now

And what a terrible mess I've made of my life

Oh, what a mess I've made of my life

No, I've never had a job

    Because I've never wanted one

  • I've seen you smile

But I've never really heard you laugh

So who is rich and who is poor ?

    I cannot say ... oh

You are your mother's only son

    And you're a desperate one

    Oh ...

  • But I don't want a lover

I just want to be seen ... oh ... in the back of your car

    A friendship sadly lost ?

Well this is true ... and yet, it's false

    Oh ...

But did I ever tell you, by the way ?

I never did like your face

I just want to be tied ... oh ... to the back of your car

To the back of your car

To the back of your car

To the back of your car

To the back of your car

To the back of your car

    Oh ...

  • I like this charming man (original version) sounds awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • you realy think? the versions on hollow are live versions brilliant but i think this one much better never heard this version before.

  • Comment removed

  • I like this version better, especially in the chorus. In the hatful version its not as dynamic

  • Still his best ever!

  • talk about a song that grows on you . . i love the smiths and all there songs seem to do this to me . . cant stop listenin to it lol

  • Great song from a great album. Best heard on vinyl and not any of that Sire records crap. Rough Trade only.

  • My name is Sergio, OMG! I love this song!

  • One of the most underrated Smiths songs, and one of the best from the first album.
