Why are the "save crystals" green? Is it a different color on the PC version?

Yes, on PC the "save crystals" only serve to restore health up to 50%, it's therefore quasi equivalent to the small medipac.

On PC, you can save as many times as you want and wherever you want.

Seems odd that on PS1 version of TR3 they did it harder to save than in TR2... But I guess they tried to make it more challenging, but ended up making it more annoying ;)

I've played it many times as well. I used to jump in the swamp from the bridge until I noticed you could get down from that climbable block.
