The US Open always had the worst trophy presentation I've ever seen in tennis. They make a big deal about the check and prize money and the trophy itself is given lip service. The speeches by sponsors are pretty bad too. When you watch Wimbledon you get a sense of the dignity in the prize as with the other slams. Plus the winners get time to talk.

Anyone who thinks he's being racist obviously has never worked in broadcasting. This match ran long so the producer most likely told Dick that he better be damn sure that the trophy presentation ended on the button.
Whether he wanted to say something in Spanish, English, Japanese, Flemish, or Swahili is irrelevant. Dick didn't want to give up the mic and potentially make the network miss the wrap.

If you ask once and are denied to speak, it'd be really awkward and remain as a black mark for future -- "Ohh, should have asked again; I got all this money, but didn't push enough to say those priceless words for my parents, fans, in front of the whole world" + it was his first grand slam. In fact, they should have also had a Spanish to English translator ready to make sure whatever he says is translated and understood by the English speaking crowd, just like its done at the French Open (English to French).
In a tournament with players from all over the world, how can one assume everyone to speak in English fluently enough to articulate to millions of viewers. Translators are supposed to be kept ready. CBS not apologizing for this is something that I consider more demeaning.
