Question is... How many times can it be crashed into before it becomes weak and dangerous? Not to mention, if it does break, sharp bits of wood arn't exactly a nice thing to have shoot through the air at people.
It is more expensive to build, yes. But, in use it can save a lot of money because costs for repair are much less. It depends on the location of course, but in the Netherlands, overall lifecycle costs are expected to be lower.
Also this was the first ever version of the design. Last month an optimized version has succesfully been tested! No video's yet. Hope to add them later.
I've always wondered how a city bus would fare in an accident, and there's few videos available to look at about this. However, considering this old bus came off quite well, they look like they can take more of a beating than I previously thought. One thing though - that back row of seats.......
A few months ago in my town, a Corsa hit a bus head-first coming round a corner. The corsa was estimated to be doing 64mph and was written off, the occupants were killed. The bus, an N-reg Dennis Dart doing 42mph at the time of the crash, was driven back to the depot to have the front beaten back into shape.
Guard rails and crumple zones are suppose to be fluid and observe the crash. If they are both tough and none fluid the occupant feel that crash and get hurt.

Very very expensive to build of course, And why take risks of building these things when there is a very low chance of it being in use (crash)

@chromiumtrioxide mybe is worth to evaluate if it is more expensive to build a good guardrail or to take care of injured people.

Have you seen the film from top view yet? (search for wooden guardrail)
It shows how fluid this crash actually is (as far as a crash can be fluid ;)
