Probably my favourite movie of all time. You can't top real life for some of the greatest stories. Lawrance of Arabia is a real historical figure and this movie in an incredible and timeless rendetion of the events he shaped. It really is a great movie, the cinematography is simpily unbelieveable. To think it was filmed before I was born... UNREAL!!!
Was very fortunate to meet Mr Sydney Pollack on the set of "Out of Africa". I also have my late Father to thank for that. One of the most memorable moments of my life!
My parents were living there at the time this was filmed and I was born there one year after it came out in the cinema... I've even seen the actual trains that Lawrence and his men blew up... it was cool
I watch a Christopher Plummer interview sometime back that when Peter O'Toole came back from Lawrence of Arabia that he wasn't happy because he got done filming on a camel because his butt hurts.
@bobb328 It's about WWI in the Middle East, a side-show of a side-show, but a place all too important for the rest of the world now. Come to my channel in about 1 or 2 weeks and I'll have all of the movie posted, in 14-15 min. segments!
@kingcaesar5 I know this. I've seen all of the movies on both 100 Years... 100 Movies lists. The Third Man and Lawrence of Arabia are easily two of the greatest movies of their times, and of all times. That still doesn't change my mind about why neither should be on the list.
@who3697cares Many British films have American Film studios backing them up, and that is why some British films are on great American movie lists. Now, there are British films that would most likely not make it onto an American film list (I.E. Brief Encounter, Kind Hearts and Coronets, The 39 Steps, A Room with a View, A Matter of Life and Death, The Crying Game etc.) because they didn't have full financial backings from American film companies.
This is laughable to watch Lawrance of Arabia on Youtube . You have to see this on the biggest movie screen you can find in a movie theater. Also all the credit goes to David Lean for having the balls to make this movie. Thank god for Lean making this film too, it is one of my favorites.
@brisco42 Its my favourite movie and I have only seen it on my laptop and about a 32 inch televsion. I plan not to watch it again until i can get a much bigger tv or see it in a cinema.
I said the same thing! did it have to be an American film to make this list? cause this isn't (along with Brigde on the River Kwai, which also made it). Or did it just have to be an English language film? if that's the case though, then why would a film like The Third Man not be included?? I need answers!!
a shame. but I've always wondered why The Good the Bad and the Ugly hasnt made the list. does it not qualify?? b/c if LoA qaulifies, then tGBU should too! (and it would easily make the list)
ja ein riesiges arschloch...raped dazu....das osmanische reich war stabilität und einheit unter diversen ethnien...jetzt ist alles ein haufen müll....dank den kafirs!
IMHO the greatest film ever. Balances Lawrence's personal story and the sweeping scale of the wider narrative beautifully. O'Toole is outstanding, and should have won the Oscar. Bolt's screenplay is so meaty. Jarre's score is unforgettable. Yes, its quite cerebral at times, but it also packs real emotional punch. Its also quite daring - it throws the blockbuster rulebook out the window: no love interest, unconventional plotting, and it doesn't flinch from showing Lawrence's nasty side. Love it!

This is definitely a top five film, along with Citizen Kane, Schindler's List, Star Wars, and Gone With the Wind.
burrowsshreds 7 months ago
Should be in the top 3, along with 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Eraserhead (1977).

This shouldn't be on the list at all. It's British!
who3697cares 2 years ago
@who3697cares it was produced by Columbia, an American Studio, same with River Kwai. The Third Man was actually on the 1997 list aswell.

This movie should be higher on the list. The visuals alone make the movie great.

Does anybody know why their not having a new AFI 100 years series this year?
grievous1 2 years ago
they only do it every ten years or so.
griffin324 2 years ago
ya but don't have a different list every year that they do?
grievous1 2 years ago
Oh yeah, according to Wikipedia they are planning something this year, but it's still to be announced. although i doubt wikipedia is right haha.

IDTVshow 2 years ago
LOA qualifies becasuse it was funded by an Amercan studio. I don't think TGTBATU was American funded, it was a European film.
fullmetalparker 2 years ago
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was a spaghetti western meaning it was italian and it was an italian produced movie, so that's why.
Although if it was in AFI's list, it would be in the top forty probably
beauanddustinunleash 2 years ago 2
The list is made up of films that were funded by American studios. LOA was an Amercian studio picture.

definetly raging bull deserves to be in top 30 not above lawrence of arabia, singing in the rain etc.
jillhaileybennyryan 2 years ago
Why the fuck is Raging Bulls 3 spaces higher thatn this? This is why I refer to the old list over the new one.
