  • Like you so much better without the mustashe Curt. Hope yer doin a lot better on the coffee!!!

  • Such a brave soul you are.

  • Luuuck!

My husband, a staunch coffee-hater, suddenly took up coffee a few months ago in his 43rd year. To make him more alert. He drinks it atomic-strength. I wish he took up cucumbers or peanut butter instead as he hates those too. Re: herbal tea.. recently while I was in Sydney with family, I tried *Gunpowder* tea. I was like what the? But it wasn't too bad.

  • Good luck!!

  • Thanks!!

  • lol im pregnant and i can't even get off caffeine!! lol

  • Hey Curt, good luck xx

  • Good luck. How's this working out for you so far? I don't think I could do it. The longest I went without coffee was about 2 weeks. Let me tell you, that first cup of coffee after a couple of weeks is amazing.

And it sounds like you're coming down with ADD. I get like that all the - oh look a quarter.

  • I blame my ADD on the shiny things that distract me. It's not my fault!

Actually, the lack of coffee has been awkward to adjust to, but the headaches didn't last long and I didn't have to deal with any nausea. I was lucky compared to the examples I read about. I've replace the obsession with herbal tea, so I don't get hyper - just a little gassy (TMI?).

2 weeks is quite a while. I hope you didn't have a throbbing headache after that long!

  • I actually don't remember any major headaches. Then again, I don't remember what color underwear I'm wearing. And I just checked. (TMI?) I do remember that I was ZOOMING on one cup of coffee after not having it for a couple of weeks. It was niiiice.

  • Hi, Curt! I'm a tea tipper myself. Green tea with mint tea is great combination. Something to try if you get bored with what your drinking.

  • Hey Darl, Yeah, mint tea was always one of my favorites. Been reading up on that stuff lately and found out that some teas have caffeine in them, but the amounts are so small compared to coffee. Herbal teas allegedly have none, so I'll be leaning in that direction.

Which reminds me... I'm due for a cup right now.

    :-)

  • Curt I missed this one so came back to watch it now. So, now that it's been several days, do you feel better without caffeine and do you have the same energy as before? Great to see you doing this to support Gary, Maria and Al. -Jim

  • Thanks, Jim - yep, I actually feel less anxious all the time and regular everyday stresses don't get to me as much. The headaches weren't bad except for a couple of days.

Turns out I haven't been 100% caffeine free, though, thanks to small amounts in some of the teas I was drinking. Still, it was a significant drop and, if anything, helped me taper off more slowly.

  • OMG NO COFFEE , ARE YOU NUTS !

  • Probably. But once the headaches subsided, I quickly realized it was the best thing I could've done for myself.

  • Good luck dude ;)

  • Thanks! Aside from a couple days of headaches, it's been a mostly easy adjustment.

  • Wish u luck :)

  • Thanks, Christine - so far so good.

    :-)

  • Rotsa ruck!!

  • Thanks, Andy!

  • YES!!!! clean shaven Curt is back!!!!! I had to give up Caffeine last year too!! Decafe filter coffee quite good too... It was so hard to give it up, I still crave the buzz... but one day at a time is the best way to take it!! GOOD LUCK Curt, I wish you the best :¬D

  • Then you know how hard it can be. Yep, decaf is just as good, I agree, although this morning I'm indulging in some herbal tea (very soothing!).

    :-)

  • Oh yes I know how hard it is.. and I know you can do it, I love herbal teas myself Camomile is great (but gives me heart burn at the moment) but my all time favorite is Lemon and Ginger, as I suffer from sore throats a lot it eases them and warms you at the same time..but you wont need the warming in Florida :¬D

  • Well actually I'm in California, but nah, it's not all that necessary here either.

  • oops...I should know that!! :¬D

  • LOL - with all my moving back and forth, it's hard to keep track without a scorecard.

  • Hmm I supose so...still should know though :¬D

  • Good luck on the no caffeine stayed away from it for a whole year once but at that time i drank lots of coffee when i was a boring little house wife with nothing better to do than drink coffee .Dr. made me quit because my body was absorbing it in a bad way.Now i drink it in moderation.:)

  • If the doctor was saying to cut back, then you were right to do so. I figured that time would probably be coming soon for me if I didn't knock it off now.

  • Good to see your bare naked face again :) Oooh caffeine free living? Why why WHYYYY? Tell you what, have a coupla Redbulls and everything will be ok.

  • OH MAN! Red Bulls are what coffee should aspire to be in terms of caffeine jolts. Holy crud, I down a few of those while driving cross country a few months ago and nearly bounced right out of the car seat.

I'm jittery just thinking back on it...

  • Good luck, Curt. You're a better man than I. Take away anything just as long as I can have coffee in the morning :)

  • As long as it's not having any adverse effect on you, I say keep enjoying it. My problem was overindulgence.

  • Good luck with the caffeine withdrawal. I lowered my caffeine intake slowly and had no withdrawal headaches or edgyness. I started with making 1/2 decaff and 1/2 reg coffee and now I make a pot with 3 spoons decaff and 1 spoon regular and I can drink all I want with no jitters. If you like to drink coffee this works well.

  • Thanks! Yep, I agree, cold turkey is not the way to go. I've been doing the same thing, more or less, but my goal is to cut it out completely. Of course, the reality is there's caffeine in so many things, so I likely won't avoid it completely. I probably don't even need to.

  • I want to give up...

hey!!! There's nothing to give up around here!

  • Wow, Felix - I envy THAT!

    :-)

  • Good luck!

And the new look without the stache is the right choice.

  • Thanks, Gary. I'm happier this way too.

    :-D

  • Never!!! I will fight them in the fields! I will make every coffee shop a battleground! I will fight until my coffee maker gives up the ghost!!

    VIVA EXPRESSO

  • LOL!

I promise not to take down anyone else with me in this quest.

    ;-D

  • What's the point on quitting caffiene. Honest question.

  • Good question. The short version is that I felt like the adverse effects were making it difficult to deal with stressful situations.

  • Hmm...That could explain alot in my life...lol. Maybe I should tell my doc who's treating my anxiety that I drink 2 super grande coffee's every day. hahaha

  • just one question... how exactly do you define a Caffeine addiction? I have a 4 or 5 cups a day, is that too much?

  • I'm not sure, Cat. I guess it depends on whether or not you uncontrollably bounce your leg to the point where Mr. Funny gets sea sick from the vibration in the floor.

  • hmmm, I do tap my foot from time to time, never connected it with caffeine though... maybe it is.

Oh, and I see you have gone through your "Six Million Man" mid-run phase ;)

  • Oh my goodness, good luck if that is what you want to do. I have given up eating to lose weight, lol, stopped drinking long ago, but I sure am not giving up my coffee, heck no. Can't take everything away, gots to have some fun in life and I do enjoy my coffee. I am very picky about it to.Good luck to ya, poor thing.

lol. seriously, I wish you success on your effort.

    Lauren:)

  • Thanks, Lauren. EXTRA kudos to you for giving up the drink! Seriously, I have friends in AA who've told me how difficult that is. And even in my very limited experience dealing with folks who are still using/drinking, I can tell it's a huge battle.

I doubt I have half the resolve you do, but even if I have that much, I should be okay.

  • I feel a nightmare coming on...hehehhe Good luck hon. Dan and I do half reg/half decaf in the morning...still haven't given it up completely though. Try some Valerian root tea to sleep for a bit. Great video!

  • I like the sound of that tea. Used to be a huge herbal tea fanatic but then Juan Valdez and his people got to me...!!!

Hope you're continuing to feel better and kicking that case of the flu to the curb for good this time.

  • Thank you so very much for the well wishes. The cold is GONE and I've started a whole new program of immune system supplements. I'll be better than new soon...well, new used...Kisses!

  • Dude, giving up caffeine? Are you crazy?

Make some videos when you get in a really crap mood from withdrawl.

  • Yep, I'm thoroughly nuts.

We may be better off that I didn't vlog while going through the worst of the withdrawals. Even Mr. Angry might have felt the G-force from that one!

    :-)

  • Ah but it worked out so well for Mr Angry Curt!

  • I will never give up my real coffee as long as there's breath in my body! I refuse! They'll have to pry the cup out of my knarled dead hand!

p.s. love you even more w/o the stache

  • LOL @ the knarled dead hand line. Let's hope it doesn't come to THAT!

    :-)

  • well I aint expecting it to happen no time soon...dontcha know?

  • About the stache: I'd kiss you either way.

About the coffee: you can do it by weening yourself. Good luck!

  • (((Caroline)))

I think I weened myself off too quickly because the temples were about to explode for a while there. But today is mostly pain free. Looks like I REALLY lucked out compared to what others have to contend with.

  • Good luck. Thumbs up to shaving the mustache.

  • Thanks! (and I agree, that needed to happen)

  • Nope. Not happening. I'm not giving up my 1/2 pot a day. I give up eating before I give up my coffee.

Oooo- there's an idea, for my wide behind!

    LOL! ;)

Good Luck- but, I couldn't do it!

  • I could tell by the video you attached as a response that you mean what you say. Hey, if you love it and it's not hurting you in any way, why give it up, right?

  • They say that 1 to 2 cups a day os OK. So, what the hell?! LOL! :)

  • I guess I was just feeling stubborn and wanted to show coffee who's boss.

    ;-)~

  • Good luck!

  • Thanks!

    :-)

  • Good luck. I like coffee so much I wrote a song entitled "I love my coffee!" I've read that two cups in the morning is actually GOOD for you! More than that is supposedly too much of a good thing... :-) Good luck!!!

  • You wrote a song, HOW COOL! Now that IS appreciation come to life.

    Right on!

I was definitely spilling over (pun?) into the "too much of a good thing" category.

  • LOL, you are absolutely darling.

  • *BLUSH!!*

    Thanks!

    8-D

  • All the best on beating the caffeine addiction. I love coffee, but I have cut down to only one or two cups a day now as opposed to nine or ten and it makes a big difference.

  • WOW, that is a big dip in activity. Yeah, you're most likely better off for it, too.

  • omg, my heart goes out to you! i just gave up high-test coke (weeping). i wish you all the luck in the world!!!!

  • High-test coke? I've never heard of that. It sounds like some sort of designer street drug version of Coke! YIKES!

Good luck with your battle as well!!

  • I am so glad u shaved that off

  • Me too.

    :-)

  • Good luck with the caffeine break! You'll do fine w/o it ... you'll only have chronic headaches, clumsiness, short-term memory impairment, diarrhea...and you'll tear everybody a new one. Other than that, you'll be fine... :P

  • Okay, well, as long as that's all we have to look forward to, it should be okay.

    8-)~

  • Well, that first scene saved us some trouble - You were going to be the subject of a mustache intervention on 2/23, but all is well now.

Good luck on the caffeine thing. It's evil, but it's sooo gooood.

  • LOL, well in that case I'm glad I took care of it myself, Ken. Although that WOULD have been a fun moment for several people, I'm sure.

And, yes, the evil has not given up without a fight. Headaches are the worst of it, though, and even those seem to have passed.

  • OMG!!! the non dark side! decaf is great as long as one is very fussy about the quality. (i will be in palm desert this coming week)

  • Palm Desert, hey that's our neck of the woods. Well, sorta. Any chance you'll be swinging in this direction at all before you head back?

  • Good Luck, Curt!!!!!!!!!!!

I quit Mountain Dew cold turkey a year and a half ago after 22 years without it, but I eventually went back to diet soda with caffeine. :(

  • Blizzee, Mtn Dew is supposed to be the toughest to kick. Wow!

  • I resolve to not make any resolutions. Caffeine makes my heart race so I'm pretty cautious with the stuff.

    Good luck!

  • I like that resolution, VK.

The heart racing thing is perhaps the most dangerous, I'd guess.

  • Good luck on cutting out the caffeine. I'm a sugar addict.

  • Yikes, sugar is a tough one. I KNOW I ingest way too must of that stuff as well.

  • Good luck in this! :)

I think you just need to get used to the lack of coffee.

  • Thanks, Michael. Yep, it's an adjustment but so far it's going pretty well.

  • Those symptoms sound like menopause to me! Been there done that! Heehee!

Hey Curt...I once heard that the stuff they use to remove caffeine from coffee and soft drinks is the same thing they use at the cleaners. Yikes! Just another one of my mindless thoughts!

    (((Hugs)))

    ~Mimi

  • Oh, one more thing...Every time you pull out those clippers, Ya scare me!!!

    Heehee!

  • LOL (((Mimi)))

For the record, I'm in need of a haircut, but I promise to go to a professional again.

    :-)

Someone else mentioned the caffeine removal process being a little 'off' and I think I need to read up on this more before I get another can of that stuff.

  • Good luck with your caffeine boycott but, more importantly, THANK YOU for removing the pornstache. You look so much prettier when I can see your face.

  • Dulc, I knew you'd be happy about that. Frankly, I'm happier this way too. The stache was more fun in my early 20s when it made me feel like I was indulging in the novelty side of adulthood.

  • Can it be the new start of the side by side canabis diet?

  • I have absolutely no idea, LOL

  • I gave it up once for a couple of years... there's still a tiny amount in decaf and once I switched to that I coulod feel even that small amount... so try going to decaf so you can have that little bit to counter the DTs! good luck!

  • Wow, you could even feel it in DECAF? I suppose I'll have to keep watch over how that stuff effects me, but so far I've just been cutting down without replacing it. Had headaches for two days but today's not bad.

    Thanks, Snark!!

  • Oh sure.. NOW you do this when I have 10 boxes of Gevalia Coffee coming?? :)

I've found that is you get those coffee flavored candies, it helps.:)

  • 10 BOXES? WOW! Yeah, I really did need to stop. Too many side effects from the overdosing, and none of them too good.

  • YOU CAN DO IT ^.^

  • Thanks, Rick! So far so good.

    :-D

  • OMG he killed the caterpillar!!!!! *sob*. I'm full of admiration for your resolute decision to give up caffeine. Believe it or not but I was thinking the same thing just a few weeks ago - because I drink copious amounts of the stuff and suffer more for it the older I get. But I can't even give up the fags (and we're talking cigarettes here) ;-) Looking forward to finding out how you get on. Good luck!

  • Thanks, Nathan. Yeah, the majority seemed to dislike the stache and I was beginning to tire of it. Must be an OCD thing, but I had too much of a strong tendency to pull at it.

    Not good!

As for the coffee, I was getting that acid reflux thing as well as the hyper sensations. Hope that's not happening to you too!

  • Good luck Curt, you can do it.

First the 'tache & then caffeine!!

I hope this won't affect the quality of your videos. Remember what happened to Samson when they cut off his hair, he he :)

  • Thanks, Andy. I didn't know Samson had a YouTube account! I do remember what happened, though - maybe that's why he hasn't been featured yet.

  • Ah, Freddie Mercury is gone and Curt is back! Good luck in quitting your caffeine-habit!! Ha, I wrote that before you said "wish me luck"! I should be joining Maria and Gary.. but I've been there, done that and the T-shirt no longer fits.. :( They, and you, have my full admiration.. :)

  • Another stache bites the dust...

Thanks, Rob! LOL @ the T-shirt line (I'm probably going to steal that at some point in casual conversation, but I promise to credit you).

  • That's fine, ha ha ha ha.. I think it's an original Gnu-ism.. :) I have since been in touch with Maria, I need to join up, I think.. I'm back on medication for my stomach, and I'm sure it would do me no harm anyway to slim a 'little' as my weight no doubt could be less!.. :)

  • Suplement with bourbon, you won't give a hoot about the caffeine. Good luck!

  • LMAO! Thanks for that advice, Dude!

    ;-D

  • good luck! hardest thing I had to do at one point in my life. but you feel alot different when you're off of it. alot better.

  • Thanks, I actually am starting to feel really good about this. The headaches were the pits but today is much better.

  • Wow - giving up facial hair and caffeine all at once, aren't you ambitious! The sans-mustache decision seems to be a popular one! The caffeine...let's just say I'm happy I won't be your roommate here in SF next month. :) But good luck. We can get healthy smoothies or something instead of caffeine when you're here.

  • I feel like I'm living my very own version of Muriel's Wedding.

    "I'm a NEW PERSON!"

Hey, I'm a sucker for healthy smoothies. Count me in!

    :-D

  • OK Mariel.

Muriel's Wedding may just be my favorite movie ever.

"Goodbye, Porpoise Spit" is an oft-used phrase for me.

  • GOOD LUCK!!! :)

    You can do it!!

  • Thanks, Amelia. So far so good!

  • Go Curt!

  • Thanks, I'm goin'!

    :-D

  • why in god's name would you give up caffeine, curtlet? you are a stronger man than i! i have managed to totally ease up on sodas, but i can't give up my morning coffee. it soothes my soul.

and i just have to say.......sans 'stache is muy handsome!!!

  • Gracias!

    ;-)

The morning coffees really were soothing, but this will challenge me to find that similar state of mind in other ways.

  • yeah, i wasn't the biggest fan of the stache, hehe, but i didn't want to say anything, you seemed to really like it. cutting caffine blows... i pumped in the vitamins and worked out more to do it.. but man i was so tired during the days for a couple of weeks..

  • It's okay, you can voice that opinion proudly. I'm actually happy to be done with it. Too much maintenance.

Working out sounds like a good idea. You definitely burn off more than just caffeine that way.

  • Good luck.

"You the Owners Manual"--I started drinking a little coffee every morning. Moderation.

    Of course--consider the source--hahahahahaha!!!!!

  • My most random reply of the day:

Because of your "on a break" video from the other day, I found myself in the mood for a mini marathon and popped in a season 7 disc of "Friends"

GAWD HOW I LOVED THAT SHOW!

  • I've tried giving up the java, but can't.

  • It's not easy, that's for sure.

Hey, maybe you should start another parody channel: Hotforcoffee

    8-D

  • ohhhcurt! don't get me started.

  • yay, IT's finally gone!!

  • LOL - thanks, Kai. Yeah, it needed to go.

  • Good luck. Now why would you want to do this anyway.

    Moderation!

  • Thanks, Randy. I might have sped up the tapering off a bit too fast, but the headaches are mostly gone now. So we'll see if I can stick to this now.

  • Oh, Curt.

It is hard. To give up caffeine, yes, I know. Go to decaf. Don't drink coke. Gary lost 10 pounds already.

    You'll be alright. - roc

  • Coke is probably one of the worst things, from what I understand. And, yep, Gary's kicking butt on his weight loss.

    Thanks, Roc!

    :-)

  • I wish you luck with stopping with the caffeine. I stopped drinking drinks with caffeine in 2003 and I haven't went back. Yay!

I also must confess: I'm glad you lost the mustache. I just couldn't get used to it. :-)

    -- Matt

  • Since 2003? WOW, then there is hope for me, Matt. Thanks.

No worries about not getting used to the stache. I wasn't getting used to it either.

  • I drink decaf--up to 3 cups of coffee daily is good for you--antioxidants. I quit for several years until I read the benefits! Try taking melatonin for sleeping -- natural product your body produces to make you sleepy. Lookin' good mustache-free!!

  • Thanks for the melatonin tip, Vicky.

And, yep, feeling a lot cleaner w/o it.

    :-)

  • Good luck Curt! I gave up the Dew, but not the morning cup of coffee!

  • Thanks, Helen - you must have strong willpower because I've heard the Dew is harder to give up.

  • I just want you to know that this morning as I drove past Starbucks I thought of you and your painful dilemma, and I felt sad in my heart for you. You poor dear sweetie pie with your dreadful caffeine headache.

Then I said "fuck that" and went in and got a tall vanilla latte. I'm drinking it now.

  • LMAO!!!

Sukatra, if you were a gay man, I'd marry you and we'd ride Juan Valdez' donkey up to the mountain top, where we would frolic among the java beans, merrily singing...

  • Well now I really wish I'd gone through with that damn sex change operation.

  • Oh Caffeine, I Am But a Fool

Darling I Love Though you make me drool

I make you when I'm feeling dry

    But If I drink you

    You will make me high

Good luck I suspect I won't be joining you!

  • **Applause**

That's a lovely tune! ALMOST makes me wish I hadn't given up the stuff.

    (heavy sigh)

  • i adore you :D GOOD LUCK! :)

  • Thanks, Dinah!

    :-D

  • Ooh Curt caffeine withdrawl is kind of tough - headaches go away after a few days. Never had the nausea. But I always go back to the caffeine eventually!! American coffee is much more caffeinated than other coffee so maybe if you switch to a good Italian espresso ...... hehehehe

  • Lesley, I really lucked out because I didn't have to deal with the nausea either. The headache was worse yesterday but today it's only very very mild (in fact I can easily take my mind off it and not think about it for hours at a time).

  • say it ain't so! i actually got nearly off of caffeine a couple of years ago, but it didn't last. oh curt, giving up caffeine IS a battle. but, good luck- it probably is a good idea afterall. peace.

  • Between you and LatteSue, these caffeinated user names are testing my ability to abstain. LOL

  • lost the moustache - yes - that was good. I love facial hair on a man, but that stash just wasn't you. Gave you an 80's look. BUT COFFEE??? Are you insane. Curt and Coffee go hand and hand!! AAHAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

  • Insane? Most likely.

80s look? LOL - yeah, I agree. My days of even hoping to have that Tom Selleck look are loooong gone.

  • good luck Curt.. i tried to drop the Dew... but i just cant do it.. its what makes me get threw the early shift at UPS...not to mention the asshole i have to work with hahaha

  • Assholular coworkers pretty much require a caffeine additive, yes. And Mtn Dew has more caffeine than any other soft drink, so I've heard/read.

  • Yeah -- so how're you feeling today?

I gave up caffeine for a while. But then I decided I'd rather think at the speed I'm used to. Now I'm back to my 10 cups of coffee a day. And not sleeping...

Maybe if'n I could take it in moderation. Can I be mildly addicted? Just a little?

Best of luck. May the headaches be avoided. They're horrible.

    -dan'l

  • Dan'l - ONLY 10 cups??!!

    *thud*

  • Actually, I guess it's a 12 cup coffee maker.

But we're talking 6oz "cups". I do it in 3 or 4 mugs.

See? Not so bad. You get used to the twitching.

  • Now, you can't tickle me anymore.....

    I'm UPSET!

  • Granny, I'll just have to find other ways to tickle you, PRAISE DA'LAWD!

  • Much better without the stash :)

Oh No! No Caffine? Today it's a quarter cup?...that's torture!

    Good Luck!!!

  • (((Sheryle)))

    Yeah, it feels better too.

As for the coffee, I still had headaches with tapering off, but they were likely a lot less worse than if I'd gone cold turkey.

  • good luck curt. i used to be addicted to coke (the fizzy drink incase your wondering). the caffeine in that was lethal but i suprising managed to stop drinking it altogether, i'm sure yo can do the same with coffee!

  • I'm relieved you were only addicted to the fizzy coke and not the other kind.

    :-)

Yeah, I miss the coffee/creamer/sweetener combo taste, but that's about it.

  • yur upper lip is so much more thankful its happy it can breath now and express its self yur so handsome now as for the caffene ok well if you think you must but remember that bowl of ice cream has far more dangerous chemicals

  • My upper lip is ecstatic, yep!

And thanks for the warning about the ice cream, Robo - I've read those ingredients and, frankly, I think the people who make ice cream are also the ones out stabbing dolphins and chopping down innocent trees.

  • Curt, I mean this with complete respect - the mustache made you look like a 70's porn star, so I'm glad you made THAT decision (that way I won't hear "bow chicka wow wow" in my head when I watch your videos).

As for the caffeine, keep us filled in on how tough it was. I may just add it to my list of things I'm giving up - including 70's porn.

  • hahahaha! I always wanted to know how to write out a porn soundtrack!
