@rainbowgirl678 because he feels totally responsible for what happened, for causing all that pain to mary and his family. he'd just been adopted, so now he probably feels like crap for screwing their lives up right away. of course, he was to blame, but it was an accident, so i don't think it would help to be mad at him for it. i guess he thought they would all be mad when they found out, so he wanted to run away from his problems and the scars he left, like so many of us do.

I would have connected the fire incident to Albert's drug addiction (him still feeling guilty, etc.) when he made his appearance in Season 9.
