  • wtf he got on

  • the dislikes are from the fans of other singers who sang the national anthem because they're mad johnny gill sang it better than their favorite singers

  • He's the Voice....thats what i called a real Singer

  • wow always a bunch of black guy players but non black female cheerleaders uh interesting.

  • @babypink912 reality is most non blacks would not come ANYWHERE if it was a bunch of black players and all black cheer leaders. they would say its a black event. just the facts , its sad actually.

  • @gjmjajaj well you are right in away but i dont think it would change completely for the nfl and nba i mean that is americans shit lol, we love sports and i dont think people would stop coming to games if they had more black cheerleaders or even throw in some hispanics just not all white all the time it gets annoying. it makes me not want to actually go to football games cuz of all the white cheerleaders and i love my raiders. i actually complained to the charger administration about that lol.

  • Gave me chills up my spine and im a boy

  • he killed it

  • Amazing!

  • he nailed it!!!

  • Omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats one of a kind!

  • I have always call Johnny Gill the Vocal Beast

  • OMG... The BEST rendition of this song that ANY male vocalist ever sang. Johnny Gill is truly blessed.

  • Actually my first time seeing this and man he simply tore it UP!!! Always knew he had a incredible voice!! The man is bad!!! Vocally he a has a presents like very few!! GOD BLESSED him with a rare voice!!

  • Hearing him sing ...make that "SANG" this just sent chills down my spine!...

  • No matter how many times I hear this rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner", the hair at the back of my neck stands up.

  • AMAZING

  • Man, we often hear talk of Whitney & Marvin's rendition, but WoW!

  • My goodness Johnny Gill can sing his butt off

  • LoOk @ 0:55 Kareem got a chill down his spine...

  • They don't sing this way, the way that you hear Johnny singing, certainly not Billy Joel. Generally only blacks have that sound. Anyone can sing with "soul" (passion), but only blacks have that soulful sound. I don't that's hard to understand. You seem to be in denial. Either way, I'm through with this topic. I have said enough on it.

  • @mrjtjt . self destructed many years ago. Singing & performing was the 1 thing that African Americans was allowed to do. Of course then it was seen as entertainment purposes for the white ppl. Rather they knew it or not it was a therapeutic release of pain that had been endured. It was also something they perfected. Black ppl are very talented ppl so why wouldn't they express what their soul says in a crafty way? Soulful singers now wouldn't that mean to vocalize words that the soul is full of?

  • @lalayinise Very well put lady! I agree wholeheartedly.

  • @mrjtjt but might be something to be looked at. First of all, soulful singers tend to be African Americans. Rapping and singing is a place where they can speak without being overly criticized because its considered a form of art. (free speech) If you give the 1 that was forced into silence & robbed of culture, family ties, & any form of freedom once upon a time the opportunity to speak, is it unusual that they will speak for many generations. If they wouldn't have had an outlet they would had

  • @lalayinise - awesome point! Thanks for the insight.

  • @mrjtjt Don't be done with this topic because I think its not only good but also a hot topic. Its not racist or to single one out from the rest but the quest to find the answer to why do they have soulful voices? What I'm about to say it came into my head & carries no fact

  • WoW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That last laker girl was looking around for somebody to hate with her..i luv when other races get intimidated by the power of BLACK talent..probably never heard anything that good and never will..

  • @FameOg man i thought i was the only one who recognized dat shit. n yea me too i love it when they do dat shit too haha its so funny

  • Johnny Gill puts his heart and soul into this performance. A pure stunning raw performance that is up there with the very best versions of The Star Spangled Banner.

  • Johnny is simply amazing and one of the greatest male vocalist still out here. Give him the song and let him have his way and its done. Whenever they do a tribute to an artist, if they use Johnny, Tyrese and Mario, the can't go wrong. My hats off to you and an applaud Johnny, sing on, you got man, you got it, no doubt and its from the gutt, true real singing!

  • Johny Gill `` dam it `` You are the Greates

  • That may have been the best i ever heard singing the national anthem! I'm amazed!!!

  • what year was this it looks like 1990 or 91 anyways everyone check out my channel @youtube just type in 'drunknhigheena' thanx

  • wat year was this?

  • straight from the church he can sing hands down....

  • He did very well no this... I could tell that he held back quite a bit cause yawl know that he's from the church! If that had been a predominately black crowd, he would have been riffing and growling up a storm! lol

  • Now that's what I call a singer right there!!! That was great!!! Even the Laker Girls was lovin' it!! LOL.

  • My My MY , he real gotthe mood right on this one , super !!

  • He really Cut The Pie when he sang the Anthem at the Tyson fight

    Still looking for that version

    It was........sumpin

  • Whitney and Marvin have the 2 best, but this would def rank top 5...I know Mariah killed it with "America, The Beautiful" but I don't know of her singing any iconic versions of the national anthem...

    1. Whitney

    2. Marvin

    3. Everybody else.

  • Marvin's the best he changed it made it funky,Johnny, and Whitney are next don't forget Whitney

    did lip zinc her's

  • Dam Dam you a Bad Boy Dam he can sing !!!!!!

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • damn, R&B singer with a soul...son is nice!

  • That's how you do it. Real SANGERS don't need anything else besides a microphone. I think that's the best version of the Star Spangled Banner that I've ever heard!

  • @theendi1,

I agree. some body said that marvin gaye´s version the best..nope it´s second best...then whitney is third best and maybe mariah is 4th best.

  • Much respect to Marvin Gayes' version.. But Johnnys' version is much better. Johnnys' voice is straight flawless.

  • 2nd best performance after Marvin Gaye.

  • go johnny ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • nice vocal song !!! respect JG

  • i like when he song at the mike tyson comeback fight against McNeely...da best

  • lol....great singing gill...

  • j.gill da man,and the gears 80s?

  • You go Johnny! Love ya

  • This is good!! I can tell he from "the church" LOL

  • He looks like Young Joc here...LoL!!! Beautiful Voice!!!

  • Dear lord, what a performance!

  • DAMN!

  • God had truly blessed him with a vocal gift ....Sing it JG!

  • Johnny Gill is one of the best SINGERS period, his voice is amazing and range dynamic, I know few singers who can touch his ability. I am in shock that he has not become a bigger success

  • Cause people are sleeping on him.

  • at 1:06 Johnny Gill becomes the first man to make all The Laker Girls wet at the same time lmao

  • Johnny ..still the man...his rolls are wicked! great control

  • If I ever win the lottery, I will follow Johnny aroung to every single performance that he EVER does. I would make it my mission to NEVER miss one sweet note from him ever, ever, ever. I LOVE me some Johnny!!

  • Wow !!!

  • dude is MICHAEL JORDAN of music

  • my favorite...go johnny lol

  • I have always said this man is a supreme vocalist. I love Johnny Gill he is so talented.

  • yo do he have to do dat thing with his cin

  • lmao i said the same thing..i think they call it "gospel jaw"

  • nah more like control my friend...thats when you are a consumate vocalist when you can control your vibratto with the your jaw movements...whitney did it...mariah,christina,celine,streisand,luther,jeffrey osborne, stevie,

  • BOYZ II MEN

  • DAMN JOHNNY

  • Johnny Gill is 1 of the best pure vocalist hands down.

  • He did an even better job at the Mike Tyson/Bruce Seldon fight.

  • I heard a rumor that he cannot get a deal becauses labels say he's too old.

If Johnny Gill went independent distribution, like TuneCore or Snocap, he would get money out the ass. Real talk.

  • Such a great singer

  • i agree

  • Very talented voice

  • Sing it JG !!!!

  • He is actually a very talented great singer. He doesn't get enough recognition. I love his voice.

  • NYFrosty: He don't get enough recog because he is thru with alla dat. He stated it in his interview with Sister to Sister magazine. He has a son he wants to devote all his time with. I can respect that. Recognition back in the 90's was really high when he made "my my my" and "rub you the right way" and that line dance song he made. "the stomp" but now its all about his baby boy. He has a daughter too.

  • This gives me chills. GOD has truly blessed him with his vocals!

  • Johnny U are the bomb.. a flawless, soulful performance.. You and Whitney Houston done the best version of this song ever made.. Great job man.

  • hes one of hte greatest singers ive ever heard.

  • I agree 100%.

  • Hearing him sing the star spangled banner makes you want to buy a Johnny Gill CD.

  • SANG JOHNNY SANG!!!!!!!!!! I could care less about this man's sexual orientation(who cares?!), Johnny is a singer's singer. NONE of the current male r&b singers can straight up blow like this man. The industry needs REAL talent like Johnny, Gladys Knight, Vesta, Fantasia, Anthony Hamilton, Coko, Kelly Price, Aaron Hall and Kenny Lattimore. R&B has become so watered down!

  • This is the best I have ever heard the " Star Bangled Banner " sung in my whole 40 yrs. of life. Johnnie Gill you are the Best.

  • Marvin Gaye's is the best.

  • The all-time great anthem's are Marvin Gaye, Johnny Gill and Whitnet Houston.

  • Jff21, you needs to be quiet honey. Because Johnny did it his own way, isn't everyone going to get up there and sing it the same old boring way. Quite frankly why you talking I didn't see your behind up there straining one damn vocal cord.

  • at 0:55 was he cryin?

  • love him n the outfit sing for the kids johnny damn i wish he wasnt gay

  • Why? Because then he'd be all yours!? Please.

I get so sick of hearing that. Gay or straight, you can best believe he's making someone happy and that someone ain't you.

  • I don't believe he's gay, but even if he was---that man can sing his ass off!

  • dammnn

  • Outstanding!

  • Alot of people mess up this song. As long as he stayed on key. The brother can sing!

  • i think so what...it sounded way better than any white boy could make it sound with all the words right

  • yo i'm not knockin dude's singing skills...i'm jus sayin since he's a famous recording artist at least he shud articulate wen he sings...if that wuda been average joe from around da way not quite sayin all da words rite, then i wudnt have made dat comment...but hey...everybody's got an opinion so i gave mine!

  • i think he articulated the clitoris of everydamn lakergirl there...to fuck up one word id say hes human and not some fucking freak from the PLANET SING UR FUCKIN ASS OFF.

  • ROTFLMAO!

  • He could articulate mine any day of the week and twice on sunday!

  • its great to know a 'sista' loves being articulated! i once was very upset when i read a number of girlie mags of their disinterest in gettting.... Now i dont feel half as bad as a man. hehe!

  • Well, of course it depends on who's doing the articulating!

  • sure! that is just a feel good comment on behalf of the hetero male species hehe! As long as another brother is articulating, iam happy for him. I am not missing out, hehe!

  • dat jst gave me chills

  • There's no one around today that sings this good!

    Lost era.

  • Them laker girls bout to lose their religion all smiles!

  • He is into church. All that comes with it. Everybody has there own style of singing.

  • Johnny Gill is by far the best pure R and B singer around today. He is truly one of the very few greats. there aren't too many people that can do what he just done?

  • You etta sang boy; my, my, my that was nice.

  • I bet you he got some that night! He could've had a menajetwa with the Laker girls. LOL!!!

  • Fine man with an awesome voice!!!!

  • Sounds powerful!

  • WOW! Now thats talent. Only a few others come to mind but they would have a tough time comparing. James Ingram, Jeffrey Osborne, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Lil G from a group called silk the lead singer produced by Keith Sweat.

  • he's got the laker girls eatin out his hand---that's talent

  • only whitneys' is better......period.

  • I like Johnny's more soulful version as opposed to Whitney's popish version. Both were good though, but the best rendition was Marvin Gaye's at the 83 NBA All Star game on the very same LA floor as this performance.

  • in retrospect, you are correct dog, johnnys' is more soul stirring, and better captures the passion of the star spangled banner, whitney just had the advantage of performing before a worldwide audience, but hers was almost as electrifying, just in a different way. marvin managed to put THE MOST unique spin ever on the anthem, almost turning it inyo a love song, but i don't think it quite matches the versions mentioned above.............

  • I'm white and I love Johnny Gill's voice and I love this song but just curious why do black singers have to always put there soul twist to every song they sing and to me tear up a good song? Why not just sing songs as they have always been sung? I don't mean to sound racist but other than Roseann Barr white people don't tear up songs that I've heard. Black singers turn a 2 minute song into 5 minutes, no need for that crap!

  • Given that most black singers were raised in the church, that's where the soul comes from. Visit any black church, and you'll see the same type of vocal characteristics.

  • Black singers have a beautiful sound and their soulful sound does not "tear up" a song! It's funny how singers of all races (especially white singers) of before and now copy or shall I say try to copy this soulful sound.

  • Not even going to entertain you. You have a Bless day!

  • that is racist stupid fuck.SUCK DICK

  • you must be white because every person black you reply to you say nigger REDNECK FAG.

  • THIS IS SICK

  • Because if he woulda did it "as they have always been sung" then it woulda been just that, the same old song, sung the same old way. Who wants to hear that? If we wanted to hear a boring old fashion version, then they may as well play a recording of the song. You're supposed to put your own twist on it, as long as you don't go overboard to were it sounds like a completely different song.

  • @mrjtjt, how any white singers have you listened to? Johnny Gill is one of my favourite singers and my favourite type of music is soul and r'n'b, but I recognise that is simply taste. But I also wouldn't generalise as you do. Take opera for example, mainly white singers, can you truely deny the soul and passion they display. Some of those rock singers, country singers and even pop singers have some soulful voices. Opinions like yours only enforce negativity.

  • @ayoungman77 -listened to quite a few, especially pop and country. Soulfulness is, in part, born of the unique experiences that African Americans have gone through in this country. Out of the pain and hurt, the physical and cultural suppression, we developed a sound indicative to all that we'd gone through. Obviously, even by the admission of some white artists, black people are mostly the only ones who 'soul' by the true definition of the word. Just being honest.

  • @mrjtjt , I am aware of the history of black music. My original reply to your comment was to challenge your notion that white people are incapable of singing with soul. I think you are confused with 'soul music', which obviously was spearheaded by black artists, as opposed to people singing with soul.

  • @ayoungman77 -Don't wanna play around with semantics. The "soul" i mean is the kind of music and the peculiar way that black people sing. The only white artists that i know that have had that ability to sound that way, especially with R & B music, are Michael Mcdonald, Teena Marie, Darryl Hall, and maybe a few others. Most whites trying to sing R & B music just don't have that sound to do it right. That's not divisive statement. All people have something they do well. That sound we have is soul.

  • @mrjtjt ,well said

  • @ayoungman77 - Anybody can sing for the "soul." That is not what i'm talking about. It is that sound that is peculiar to only black folks. Sorry if you struggle to understand that. That doesn't mean we are better than any other people, but we have our gifts. Other people have theirs.

  • @ayoungman77 ,Rock singers have rock voices, country singers have country voices, and pop singers have pop voices. They dont have soulful voices, even though they do sing with passion

  • @tuzwol - I agree wholeheartedly. But I think that fact is indisputable. Someone would have to be in denial to not understand that. I have never heard anyone of any other race sing with the soulfulness of a Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Al Greene, etc., especially not a white singer. We all have our gifts, but soulful music is something that is endemic to black artists, with just a few exceptions.

  • @mrjtjt, so you haven't heard Eva Cassidy, Dusty Springfield, Billy Joel? You yourself even gave examples of other soulful white singers. I have not denied the greats ie, Marvin, Aretha and of course Mr Gill, or even that black people have founded and claimed the association to soul(ful) music. I challenged the statement you made 'white singers can only sing in that way'.

  • hell he can sang row row row your boat to me i luv him since i was 5 singing at my great grandfather church in dc him and randy

  • good

  • What you mean a bit affected?

  • Johnny Gill is a damn good vocalist,so sad that he never truly got his duew commercially, but trust me,musically, that dude has helped through many a sex filled nights, makes the ladies feel sexy

  • Nobody---absolutely NOBODY---breaks it down like Johnny Gill. 'Nuff said!

  • whoa...

  • Oh My God!!!!

  • ALRIGHT JG U BESS GET IT !

  • Damn that man can sing!
