McKuen and Anita Kerr..."Seasons" albums. Kept me from going over the edge while in college and married with a baby and not knowing sh(t about anything.
Memories of Windy. . .Ft. Myers/Tice Florida on the cusp of 1979-1980--This music has been impressed on my mind for 33 years. The anonymous narrator who McKuen said he would want to read any of his work. . .The recurring themes and sounds of the surf...The memories of turbulent youth--mid 20's--thank you for sharing this
@urdivine I always liked the song "The Importance of a Rose" and there is a poem from "The Sea" I can't remember the name of. The narrator talks about "crawling down your throat and seeing the world through your eyes." The music is so hauntingly beautiful. I particularly remember the trumpet solo. I remember attending a poetry seminar back in the early 80's. One of the speakers read some of Rod's poetry with an air of sarcasm and referred to his poetry as greeting card fluff. Jerk!

I don't know what you said to make Youtube think it was SPAM. I'm glad I saw that.
I LOVE that you are only 21 and a McKuen fan. I don't know if you're female or male, but it is still pretty rare. Any chance your McKuen influence was your mother?
@urdivine I'm not sure why anything was marked as SPAM. Strange! And I actually found out about Rod McKuen completely by myself. My parents were born in the 60s, and surprisingly they didn't really know about Rod McKuen at all. My Grandma knew about him though. I actually came across 'The Sea' in a Goodwill a few years ago and I've been a huge fan since.
@urdivine Wow, I'm 1 in 652,035! Well, he's a pretty rare performer. It's amazing how much work he has produced over his lifetime and how little of it is seems to be remembered. Have you ever read Rod's autobiography called, "Finding My Father"? It's a real page-turner- Rod's like a detective trying to piece together his own past, and find his father. I really enjoyed reading it- It makes me want to make a film or documentary about him, because he's had such an interesting life.
Yes. I never read his book but I do remember him going on talk shows, in the 80s, in an effort to find his father. I was working for a private investigation company at that time and I remember thinking, I really wanted to help him.
I've thought the same thing, about the idea of making a movie about his life. I hope it's done and done right.

Thanks for that old video of Rod singing "Jean". You may want to correct your title. You have "Gene." He wrote that title song of the movie "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie".
@urdivine I'm actually not the person who uploaded that song. It probably showed up on my channel because I 'favorited' the video. Anyway, I noticed that that person misspelled that song name too. You should give them a heads up!

The French get Valery, we get Rod McKuen. PLANETARY BIAS

This really takes me back in time. How great! Wish I could put this music on my Web site, outofavila , which is all about the sea!

Thank you, very much. I hope you like the future videos I plan to do, of his work.
I am curious, though.
Do you have a favorite or two of his?
Do you like much of Rod's other work, besides "My Friend ThThe Sea"?
Do you have any of his CDs?

OK. I did some calculations for the odds of becoming a McKuen fan;
[using a special calculator]
Female - age 55 - 65 = 1 out of 9 people
Female - less than 55 = 1 out of 23
Male - age 55 - 65 = 1 out of 7,023
Female - age 21 [influenced by older McKuen fan] = 1 out of 9,172
Female - age 21 [Discovered McKuen on their own] = 1 out of 76,754
Male - age 21 [Discovered McKuen on their own] = 1 out of 652,035 people
Quite rare, indeed
