I love the sound of reciprocal engines too... The problem is vibrations. They vibrated the airframe apart so badly that metal fatigue was a problem. It was too expensive to continue after the jet came into economic viability. But there's NOTHING like old time THUMPERS to make a motor head feel good! (LOL)

FIRST OFF RICK0rz, You DO NOT STICK YOUR HAND ANYWHERE NEAR THOSE BLADES. No matter how fast you try I guarantee your hand is GONE. Lol dont ever try it.
Real engine props are generally built to pretty stringent standards, you rarely if ever hear about a prop blade flying off a hub unless it gets damaged in some way. The entire propeller has been known to part company from the engine (especially catastrophic coaxial failures), but they usually fly forward, not sideways.
Not to say that it's 100% safe, I wouldn't be standing where the camera guy is in that video.
I've seen this at the flookbrough show! He's not scared to rev them!! lol. Twin direction props so he can flog it! Just think 1940's With all steel internals dry sump fuel injection Super chargers. Amazing technology!!
nope. straight carburated, its an unpressurized system, so if you are upside down and pulling either zero or negative g's will cause the engine to quit due to fuel starvation
These Lot put twin props on with one reversed. one pulling and one pushing. Other wise they couldn't rev them so hard they'd just pull them selves into the crowd and try to take off. lol : D
We can't forget the awesome Packard Merlin!

doe it have a flywheel or not
TheLaurencekid 2 years ago
No it doe't.
dairwin2000 2 years ago
@TheLaurencekid
The propeller mass is the flywheel. The blades are cut shorter for ground display.

I wonder what are they testing using these engines to drive each propellers?
Starjack100 2 years ago
Hi. This isnt a test of any sort. Its just for display. A full sized prop on one of those little trucks might have disasterous consequences!
Hanglands 2 years ago
@Hanglands hihi, you're right.
a full sized prop in this configuration with this engine, might produce up to 5 tons of static spin...quite much for a simple truck

Miss Shillings orifice. fixed the negative g problem.
150hp came from the exhaust setup.
Turbocharging, normal aspiration is better than fuel injection, with the engines of that period.
Shout yourself a christmas present and buy, borrow or steal, a copy of...."Not Much Of An Engineer" an Autobiography by Sir Stanley Hooker.
I have always promised myself to own a Rolls MkIX engine, now I found that I will need 4. The harmonics, @6.18 6.20 are bloody beautifull.

I'm surprised they let people stand that close, inline from the propeller.
I know a guy who had a model airplane prop fly apart, and it stick in his leg.

actually they are carburated. not fuel injected....
supraguy8792 2 years ago
I thought they were macanicaly fuel injected into the Super charger to stop them cutting out in 0G or roll?
Stil amazing! : D

Would an airplane running a Merlin have dual propellers like that? that's fantastic! Someone should take the sound from that and pop it in FSX.
ViktorDragmire 3 years ago
That dual-prop Merlin is actually a RR Griffon, and yes it was fitted to some spitfires, and also the Avro Shackleton.
