Wow, as a Spanish learner of just under a year, I have finally understood all of the tense usages which have up until this point seemed daunting and confusing! Thank you so much! Really great clear and informative lesson!
In your example of using the preterito you give this example:
Los niños no abrieron la ventana.
I remain confused how something that "didn't happen" can ever be thought to have "happened and completed"... Of course, the imperfect would suggest the action is still happening (which seems even MORE odd). Can you speak a little bit on the subject of negated sentences and it's relationship to how to understand what tense is to be used?
I really love your verb chart that you made for this video, and I decided it would be a nifty idea to transpose it into Excel to use as a template for exploring the conjugations of different verbs.
I've fleshed out the Ud. forms as well, but I'm not sure if I did them all correctly. Could you kindly check whether I conjugated all the Ud. tenses and moods for "hablar" correctly?:
I really appreciate the graphical clarity of this. There are so many YouTube language teachers out there, but few of them provide the organizational structure to effectively teach the student who's serious about learning a language from the ground up.
@9jsik9 Good question, and a tough one to answer... the person was using the preterite form of estar, estuviste, with the progressive form, llorando, meaning, were you crying? The preterite usage implies that the crying was a completed event, in and of itself... Tough to explain, but look for my video on the preterite and imperfect.
This was so awesome - it really put it all together for me. You put in a lot of effort and time into these videos and I definitely appreciate it. Your students are very lucky. I think you could write an amazing Spanish grammar book because you know how to make it clear for your students. I put this in my favorites and will refer to it often - thanks :)

Hey professor Jason, have you heard of a website called livemocha d.o.t com? i've been trying out Portuguese with it but unfortunately I've been really busy with school work, so I haven't made much progress. But the website is free, so I figured why not?
You should check it out, i really like the format of it, you can have your work graded by actual native speakers (and then you can grade other people's work in your own native language).
Sorry this sounds like an ad, but it's really good.

@VictimOfBoredom Never mind, I believe the one mistake was that it should have been "Habrá hablado" for the future perfect. Sorry to bother you. :)
