In my opinion it should've been the rubber match between Bret and Owen at Survivor Series 1994. Owen won at WrestleMania X, Bret won at Summerslam, and then to decide who really was the best, it should've been Owen vs. Bret III at Survivor Series and Owen should've gone over and become WWF Champion.

In complete honest, Owen was just as good as Bret, if not better. He should've been champion at some point, but Owen didn't care too much about it.

And when I think of deaths in wrestling, no one's in worse than Owen's. One of the funniest, kind hearted people to ever walk the Earth, he had his life take away so cheap and unfair. He'll always be missed.

If anyone gets a chance, read Broken Harts by Martha Hart. It's a fantastic, emotional book.

@TheLyricsLegend if Owen had not died there is no doubt he would of been WWF/E champion it would of happned but unfortunely things worked out the way they did. and of all the wrestling deaths this is truly the most unfortunate because most of the other deaths were by suicide, drug overdose, heart attack, etc etc he would not have been one of those wrestlers who died young.

Owen should have been given the title after Bret left for WCW. The way Owen came and attacked Shawn Michaels on RAW by smashing him through a table would have set up a great feud, and a feud that had a meaning behind it with everything that was going on. Owen could have held the title until Wrestlemania 14 and could have dropped it to Austin to begin the Attitude Era, but at least Owen would have been a main event star. A complete fail by WWE for not doing this.
