What I am trying to say is is that whether or not his parents are qualified to get SCHIP is irrelevant. It does not matter whether or not putting him in the public eye is moral or acceptable. He lived and is recovering. Neither he nor his sister are expendable nor should they die at the whim of greedy and selfish adults who devalue the lives of others. They talk about kids being inhuman and insensitive to violence yet they are a lot worse.
Out of all honesty in my own opinion some of you are missing the point. Fact of the matter is a 12 year old and his sister were seriously injured in a car accident and survived and are relatively living a full life because they were fortunate enough to have SCHIP to pay for the necessary lifesaving surgery. Whether he was used as a poster child or not is besude the point. What is important is that he SURVIVED. That is not a crime nor is it amoral and yet these idiots would rather he died.
That's why you don't use children. In debate, you need to be able to question people's motives, understanding, and decision making process. If you give a child an anti-abortion sign, of course that leads to questions about whether they are doing it to please parents, what they know about the law/history/biology/etc., and whether they have thought about the effects of what they are proposing.
Using children is a cheap way to avoid answering questions needed to judge the validity of a view.

Don't rely on everyone else to do your fact-finding for you, and atack them for the alerts. Attack them when the alerts are wrong, but find out first, dumb ass.

Universal Health Care coverage is absolutely the right thing to do. It's the moral thing for a society to do (ensuring that all members of that society have the capacity to adequately maintain their health and well being), and it's is the BEST thing to do for a well run society to do its best to ensure all its members are as healthy as they can be and choose to be by making health care easily accessible, available, and affordable. It's not govt control, only an additional insurance program.
I'd prefer helping people afford these things by lowering the cost of health care rather then making people dependent of the government. Plus making it a part of the government doesn't make it "free". People who do pay taxes will be paying for the benefits to those who don't. I'd prefer to buy my insurance for my own needs rather than the government telling me what that is. It's not the government's responsibility to take care of ever single need of the citizenry and I don't want it to...
Every single need? Hardly. Access to available and affordable health care which is guaranteed regardless of one's situation in life is not only a societal duty but is a benefit to the ENTIRE society regardless of who is paying more or less into it. You should be thanking bush for defending the constitution in this case. It is unconstitutional for congress to take control over our healthcare. Democrats and their universal healthcare will make America a totalitarian state.
The tenth amendment states "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.". Article one does not give congress the power to establish a health care system so instead that power is delegated down to the states per the tenth amendment. The federal government according to the constitution has no power to establish a healthcare plan.
Suggest you read United States v. Darby, 312 U.S. 100, 124 (1941), Article I., Sec. 8, Clause 3, and Article I., Sec. 8, Clause 18. The 10th amendment is basically a thrown away amendment. The Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause have both been interpreted broadly, the federal gov't can almost do whatever it wants. Social security has never been struck down, federal minimum wages have been up held though they aren't explicitly mentioned.
We already have a national health care system that is grossly underfunded and is not broad enough: Medicare and Medicaid. Consider this: Congress could pass legislation stating that all insurance companies will be required to accept all applicants, that the fed govt will set all rates, and the fed govt will be the only party from which ins companies can accept payment. This would all be w/in Congressional authority under the Commerce Clause as interpreted by the Supreme Court.
Commerce is different from welfare. Do me a favor and reread the constitution in its entirety. You might find the general welfare clause, but that has not been judicially defined to my knowledge. Find a case that defines the general welfare clause and you will win your argument.
Insurance across state lines is commerce. If growing wheat on your own land for your own consumption falls within the powers of the commerce clause, then health insurance is commerce. Besides, there is no such thing as a "general welfare" clause in Article I. There is a reference to the general welfare in the preamble, but the preamble isn't law.
Article One Section 8: "The Congress shall have power
To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and "general welfare" of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;" The government subsidising any business is welfare.
But your argument is still a loser. As I referenced earlier, the commerce clause has been interpreted vary broadly. It would be legit. If something as far removed from "commerce" as the Civil Rights Act can pass muster under it, health insurance does as well.
Sorry that I'm a strict interrupter of the constitution but that is just what I believe. If you want this country heading towards a fascist totalitarian state then go ahead and interpret the constitution "broadly".

Out of all honesty in my own opinion some of you are missing the point. Fact of the matter is a 12 year old and his sister were seriously injured in a car accident and survived and are relatively living a full life because they were fortunate enough to have SCHIP to pay for the necessary lifesaving surgery. Whether he was used as a poster child or not is besude the point. What is important is that he SURVIVED. That is not a crime nor is it amoral and yet these idiots would rather he died.

That's why you don't use children. In debate, you need to be able to question people's motives, understanding, and decision making process. If you give a child an anti-abortion sign, of course that leads to questions about whether they are doing it to please parents, what they know about the law/history/biology/etc., and whether they have thought about the effects of what they are proposing.
Using children is a cheap way to avoid answering questions needed to judge the validity of a view.

We are advocating providing guaranteed (preferably single-payer) not-for-profit health insurance to all American citizens. That's it. We already have an efficient (compared to for-profit health insurance companies) and effective model in use here. It's called Medicare. Universal health care benefits the ENTIRE society in a wide variety of ways, including overall care & cost.

Universal Health Care coverage is absolutely the right thing to do. It's the moral thing for a society to do (ensuring that all members of that society have the capacity to adequately maintain their health and well being), and it's is the BEST thing to do for a well run society to do its best to ensure all its members are as healthy as they can be and choose to be by making health care easily accessible, available, and affordable. It's not govt control, only an additional insurance program.

Access to available and affordable health care which is guaranteed regardless of one's situation in life is not only a societal duty but is a benefit to the ENTIRE society regardless of who is paying more or less into it. Those on the lower end of the income spectrum are working VERY hard to make money for those at the upper end of the spectrum, and they simply need to learn that they have a duty to support those health care needs AND it's to their benefit.

The tenth amendment states "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.". Article one does not give congress the power to establish a health care system so instead that power is delegated down to the states per the tenth amendment. The federal government according to the constitution has no power to establish a healthcare plan.

Suggest you read United States v. Darby, 312 U.S. 100, 124 (1941), Article I., Sec. 8, Clause 3, and Article I., Sec. 8, Clause 18. The 10th amendment is basically a thrown away amendment. The Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause have both been interpreted broadly, the federal gov't can almost do whatever it wants. Social security has never been struck down, federal minimum wages have been up held though they aren't explicitly mentioned.

We already have a national health care system that is grossly underfunded and is not broad enough: Medicare and Medicaid. Consider this: Congress could pass legislation stating that all insurance companies will be required to accept all applicants, that the fed govt will set all rates, and the fed govt will be the only party from which ins companies can accept payment. This would all be w/in Congressional authority under the Commerce Clause as interpreted by the Supreme Court.

Commerce is different from welfare. Do me a favor and reread the constitution in its entirety. You might find the general welfare clause, but that has not been judicially defined to my knowledge. Find a case that defines the general welfare clause and you will win your argument.

Insurance across state lines is commerce. If growing wheat on your own land for your own consumption falls within the powers of the commerce clause, then health insurance is commerce. Besides, there is no such thing as a "general welfare" clause in Article I. There is a reference to the general welfare in the preamble, but the preamble isn't law.

To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and "general welfare" of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;" The government subsidising any business is welfare.

But your argument is still a loser. As I referenced earlier, the commerce clause has been interpreted vary broadly. It would be legit. If something as far removed from "commerce" as the Civil Rights Act can pass muster under it, health insurance does as well.

Keith oberman has no credibility at all - at least on O'Reilly when he has a problem with an issue he will invite someone on his show to support the side he disagrees with so a thoughtful discussion can take place.
